  • Today I got my 2018 Royal Enfield Himalayan, and it ended up on the ground twice! After some great trail riding I did some moto camping out in the woods. Hope you enjoy.

    Been waiting for the Himalayan to reach the U.S. market for over a year. Picking one up this week. I've done my homework on this bike and I don't see how you can go wrong for the price.

      Camo Man That is really cool you’re getting a new bike this week! I really like the Himalayan so far. I feel exactly the same way about the price too. Hard to beat. Friday I’m taking mine in for the first full service and engine guard install. Best of luck with your new moto and ride safe!

    Well it's a dirt bike and you gotta introduce it to the dirt. My wife won't watch my crash videos. I like the Himalayan. It's a neat bike down to basics but with some tech. Did you trade the Honda or did you keep it for longer trips?

    • @fireballmalone1
      @fireballmalone1  6 років тому

      azdesertdog I had to keep the Honda. It’s such a great commuter bike and still lets me do camping. Long trips would be possible with Himalayan but I think the NC was kind of designed for road trips. I am getting engine guards installed once the shop gets them in stock. Rsmf

    Someones already probably mentioned it, but theres a really simple technique to lift even the heaviest bike up using your legs. You basically put your back to the seat, get a good grip of the frame a use your legs to put it back up. This what I learned in the police. I pick up my new Himalayan next week here in Lake Taupo, New Zealand. Very excited to get out there camping and fishing. (November is summer here now) Thanks for your very informative videos.

      Thanks for the tips, I appreciate it. When I first got my Himalayan I had a bum shoulder so I was trying to be really careful not to make it worse. Probably shouldn't have been riding but, it would've' been impossible to get her brand new and just park her while on the mend. I hope you like yours and have some great adventures on her. Take care, ride safe, and ATB!! Cheers

      @@fireballmalone1 that explains the difficulties you were having. Lucky some people came by. Where I live you don't have to go far in the bush and forests to be completely isolated and see no one for days, if at all. You can get into trouble pretty easily. I don't have one yet, but will get one soon and that's a personal ELB.

    What is it about the Himalayan. I saw a REH being reviewed and was immediately smitten.. I like the pared down no frills industrial look . As to max speed, 65/ 70 works for me. If it had more power it would be even heavier. I pick mine up Jan 4th. I'm stoked!

      Dan Carlson Hey bud, no worries. I’m 6’2 and round about 245. It’s a great little bike off road and even on street but it does lack power to be honest. There’s a new one coming out round 600cc, if I could that’d be the one I’d get. Uphill at 75 mph it starts to struggle and slowly losses speed. Other than that it’s great. Hope this helps! ATB

    I've watched a few dozen riders of this bike (most in India), and they use the centerstand when out in the woods and such in or that the bike won't fall while they unpack. On a side note, I'm saving my coin to pick up this same model (and same color), I find it to be the most versatile bike of the type.

    • @fireballmalone1
      @fireballmalone1  6 років тому +1

      Randal Lovelace The center stand is a good idea. Guess I’m just not used to having one. I’m getting out this weekend and I’ll give it a shot. Good luck with yours, so far I really like mine. Ride safe!

  • @RollModel724
    @RollModel724 5 років тому +1

    For anyone else (not saying you don't know this but for new people) avoid the fall: you need to get on the pegs, turn your foot in the direction of the turn and counterbalance with your rear over the rear-- and a bit more speed. You could use a tree as a support when you don't want to use the side stand or the center stand.

    • @fireballmalone1
      @fireballmalone1  5 років тому +1

      Stickler This is really good advice. I found confidence to be a big factor as well. I have been riding more off road and have built up a little more confidence and hit stuff like this more aggressively, within reason, head up and the result is much better. I will focus on the positioning of my feet when I am riding and maneuvering off road terrain. It makes sense that it would play a role like how you go where you look. Cheers!

      @RollModel724 5 років тому +1

      @@fireballmalone1 I have learned a LOT from friends and some good UA-camrs like MOTOTREK. The Himalayan isn't the "best" bike, but every time I have rode one I find myself saying "I bet I can do THAT."-- a bike that gives a lot of confidence.
      Another tip for riders... when you do a slow turn and don't want to stand on the pegs... get the foot in the direction of the turn down, but keep the far foot on the peg. This will allow for some more lean. Look where you are going (like you said).
      For picking it up.. keep it in gear when lifting so you won't have to worry about it rolling.

    Sorry Mr Malone, but I had to laugh,, when the bike went over a second time I thought sooner you then me.. I too own a Him ,and I have been down trails pretty similar.I,v only done about 400 miles just had the 300 done (of course they overfilled the oil) You are so lucky in having so much room to explore, here in the UK we are pretty restricted by laws and just been a small country.. Personally I think the Him is the heavyist bike I would want to pick up,, in fact I doubt I could,,it weighs 400lbs so no light weight...but lets face it any bike dropped in the wrong position is going to be a bugger to get up..you where lucky to have help.. It seems you have zero experience off road, you should practice in easier areas first. And when you’re out riding in the woods you just lean your bike against a tree. If you’re on a dirt bike many don’t have kickstands. And you shouldn’t be alone because you can’t pick your bike up and your out by yourself. You got lucky that side by side came along.

It's much easier to pick it up if you're not trying to lift it uphill as well as getting it back to center. If the bike is facing uphill as opposed to any other direction, then you can clamp the front brake and pick it up much easier.

If it goes into calibration mode it will flash “CA” and riding in a figure 8 a few times will calibrate the compass. If it still isn’t working correctly it could be fault. Also, magnets should be kept away from the compass because it could cause it to read incorrectly. I hope this helps and I’m excited for you!

      Don Wardhana I never had an affinity for Harley and don’t eat cheeseburgers or watered down beer, lol. Ride safe and thanks for the comment, cheers

    How did your first season go with the new RE? I bought mine almost exactly a month before you got yours and put just over 7k miles on it last season. Highsided once while parked as I was checking in at a Sault Ste Marie motel and then I lost in deep sand while exploring Fort McCoy. Really enjoying your videos and appreciate the fact that you share how and what you're packing on the various rides and bikes....all helpful to me, I'm sure others as well. Hope our Spring arrives soon after yours does!

    I'm just about ready to buy a Himalayan, too. I wonder why they can't invent mirrors that just snap off without being damaged? This has been an age-old problem. You should be able to drop a trail or dual-sport bike and incur NO damage to it whatsoever. That should be one of the primary design points in a bike of this type.

    @08:25 Oh no, not again! I laughed in sympathy, but then cringed at @09:38 when I though it might be heading over again. Good on you for sharing it all, so we can learn alongside you.
    Was your choice of color an easy one? The Black Himalayan is sharp, but I'm concerned about visibility and summer temperature.

    Keep going on those trips. Biking is a lifestyle choice. So this bike gets you to outdoor life real good. Get a center stand, makes it more stable when parking in woods. As you take on more technical terrain you will progress. I always felt it is the confidence you gain with experience that matters most on trails. Always make sure you have a somebody waiting for you when doing this solo, so they will check in if you don't report in time. Trouble on trails can happen fast. Good luck from India!

    One day you'll be dragging it under gates/fences and 180° to point downhill LOL. RIDE ON!

    For a side stand plate I use 4”X4" electrical box cover. $.99 at Home Depot. I carry it in my tank bag.

    Baptism of fire for the new bike - You need a 'camel toe'/ sidestand foot enlarger... or rather the bike does ;)

      Chris K Camel Toe? That’s a new one for me. Off to the internet to do some research! Thanks for the tip. And you’re right about trial by fire. It sure takes the pressure off though. Ride safe and ATB!

      Mmonkey There have been a few editions of this model and this is the newest one. A lot of the kinks they had with the earlier models have been addressed and it actually runs and rides really well.

    If you can’t pick up your motorcycle from the ground you lack the skills to ride
    Don’t Ride
    At 62 I picked up my my 1996 Gold wing full dress at 1000 lbs by myself
    That was the first time in over 50 years of riding
    My first bike was 1968 Yamaha 50 top speed 43 mph I was 16 now 66 now 2017 KLR and 2012 Victory Crossroads love it both bikes get the same mileage 51 mpg
    I love my retirement
