I just purchased a Trek EXe 8 AXS GX T-Type. It's amazing! The reason I love it is that it feels like a real bike. I also got the battery extender that gives me 50% more battery. But the versatility of taking it off for a lighter bike. As a disabled veteran getting back into riding, I love it.
I have the Trek Fuel Exe 9.8 after riding a Scott Spark MTB. The Trek is amazing, it is quiet, light, rides nicely, will cope with most terrain and it looks great. I bought mine after sitting on the fence about changing to a EMTB for years. I agree with Tom 100%
Hi Sam, I have had a new EXE 9.7 for about a month now. Also have an Levo SL which I have had for over a year. I did not like the Trek factory settings (like Tom I think?) so set the pedal response to quick and set power and assist so I can get max power 300 Watts in ECO but I have to put in bout 500 watts to get it, MID have to put in bout 350 watts get it and HIGH about 200watts to get full power.. similar to way I had SL set up. I found I could climb some Really steep tracks easier on EXE than SL so more power for sure but did not seem faster?? So I did a few different rides over a few days, Levo one day, Exe next day tried to put in same effort which was about 200watt average on both bikes said computer. Rides were 20 to 30 minutes 150 to 250 metres climbing approx.. I actually thought the SL seemed faster BUT on each ride the EXE was faster by about 10% and used bout 25% less battery which was amazing I thought. Also top speed was quicker on EXE each time by bout 10% which I think is due to slacker head??. Anyway both are great bikes but different. I am more comfortable with the seat post angle on the SL as the EXE is more upright so different pedalling geometry I think. I am sure the rumoured SL with 60nm will be great.. Norm for Cooma Snowy Mountains Australia..
5'10" and went with a medium.. Give me a shorter more playful bike! The Fuel Exe is a super fun natural feeling trail bike. I think this bike will bring a lot more US riders into the ebike game. Trek did a great job, but be aware the range isnt the best @ full power. I have to stay in Eco 90% of the time to get 30 - 35 miles out of it. So if you want long days in the saddle, you're going to earn it! It does a great job at taking the edge off the climbs so you can enjoy the descents more! Also, you can hear the motor, its very faint and its mostly noticeable at high cadence. Been riding trail bikes for about 16 yrs and I've tried other ebikes, this is the first one I've bought. Love it!!
I am about the same height but worried the medium might be a bit to cramped. Did you change anything on the bike to get a better fit? I had a test bike last weekend, size large, that was oké but felt a bit long, I would consider changing out the 45mm stem for a 35mm and shifting the saddle a little bit forward. Great bike though.
Sam! Now that I got your attention. More of these talks, Sam. This is so much more informative and entertaining than just a straight review. I think picking a fan of the channel for specific topics each month or more often. This would be a game changer over other channels.
Aftershokz bone conducting head phones have been a game changer for me. Can still hear the trail and everything around you and they sound great. I actually prefer the weight of my Levo over my regular pedal bike just feels so much more confidence and with the weight seems like the suspension actually works.
I second that opinion for the Aftershokz ... I do some road bike and I didn't go out with headphones ... the disconnection from the outside world really worried me, but now... changed my life. Also, I did try the "Chinese clones" and nothing is even in the same class level as the Aftersockz
Wating for the Full Power Motors to get lighter and the Batteries smaller, by then they will have internal gears too, just Love the Power intoxicating to Ride EVERYWHERE AND OVER ANYTHING 😉🤠
Me and my friend both recently purchased the Giant Trance E+3. Yesterday we did an 18 mile ride with just over 3,000 feet of climbing, and I used 2 bars. I’m not sure how far I was from dropping down to two bars, but I have confidence that I could go over 30 miles with 5000 feet of climbing. That is pretty impressive for a powerful bike that I paid $5300 for.
There will always be a market for full fat MTBs but the lightweight bikes are great too, especially for people that have ridden normal MTBs for a long time as they feel a lot closer to a normal bike. I rode my SL yesterday with a mate on a normal non-MTB with my bike a zero assistance. It felt pretty good actually.
Really enjoyed this Sam. Brilliant interview. When I saw how long the video was, I thought I wouldn’t last the distance. But I was wrong! Enjoyed the whole thing! And totally agree. 160/150 travel is the sweet spot for an all round do-it-all bike….especially for those of us who can only afford one bike…which is probably 99% of your listeners. Ciao from NZ,

Hi Bill. That was my first impression of the TQ’s power as well. It wasn’t until I used the TQ app to change the settings that I could feel the power. The bike came from the factory with very soft settings.

Great video, I am loving my Fuel EX e 9.5 once I get a Fox 36 on front it will be perfect. I have upgraded the brake levers to XT and the shifter to XT. 170 miles on it and no regrets. If I did it again I think I would have got the XT build.
Im 59 years old and I ride a non e-bike my wife has a gen 3 levo. She mostly rides in eco or trail and we have a blast. Sadly Here in the US, e bike trail access is a real issue......the Fuel Ex may be a game changer in some places. Curious how many people recognize its a e bike?
@@randallgd Look at the trek site and compare the fuel ex e and the regular fuel ex. nearly identical. Unless someone is very familiar with the e version nobody seems to notice. We travel all around the U.S. and I ride many trial systems, never seen any enforcement anywhere, at least on singletrack trails.
Great chat from those with lots of e-experience! I agree with Tom, Fuel EXe is a unique e-ride experience and feels closet to regular bike when pedaling and jamming trails and I have a Rail as well that definitely feels like on an ebike, even though very fun to ride as well
Ive had my EXE now since July, done a lot of kms enduro , Dh & trail. Done some upgrades Fox 38 160, DHX shock (146mm) & saint brakes. This bike charges and the suspension platform is amazing. Battery & motor is a game changer. Being quite is awesome and a point of diff when riding with other non ebikers.
Great conversation guys - that dream bike question: - my answer is similar to you Sam or just a more refined Orbea Rise, quick release battery of the same size and weight but more capacity 😃 and a screen like the trek exe.
Sam, just finished your video. 1h but very informative and Tom is a great guy! You should do this again with other riders from different countries. I agree with both of you, regarding bike prices and the levos SLs being great bikes. But I decided to go for a Rotwild R.X375. This is my first eBike and it‘s like a Hybrid Bike for me. I use the motor only when I need it, due to some „leg problems“. But it helps a lot and I still can ride. I use the second mode with 20/35/50 Nm and the battery lasts for 2 longer rides on my local trails. It is sufficient for me! A second battery (1,9kg) in my backpack would be great, but the bike was expensive enough and energy prices are high enough these days in Germany! 🤬 Again great show! Keep up the Good work! Great chat with Tom and good to hear his perspective on quite a few bikes. You both touched on the cost of bikes in general these days and I agree, they are way overpriced in many cases. Hence in my case, I bought the TREK 9.7 EXe as the 9.8 was just that bit extra that it was out of my budget. Very happy with the 9.7, apart from the fact that we are unable to get the extender battery until December some time. Bikes were sold here in NZ with the understanding that the extenders would be here in October, but as usual.....delayed!! Good show Sam, keep up the good banter.....

This video made me do my own range test and I have not even finished watching it, hh. I have Orbea Rise M (360w battery), 83kg, fully maxed settings - 1178 height meters, 20km length. Going down easy trails, going up mixed tarmac and gravel.
@@SamsBikes I guess. I cant compare much since it is my first emtb. The battery has one downside though, it requires slow charging, 5 hours for full charge is a lot. I heard there will be new 385w battery for next years rise, it should be even lighter and I hope for faster charging.

I've been riding my RadRover 6 Plus fat tire ebike now for 6 months, over 1100 miles. Love the bike but it's a tank, weights over 80lbs! I need something lighter and can be rode even if the battery is dead. I am very close to getting a Trek ebike. Going back and forth between the Rail 9.9 XXI AXS and the Fuel EXe 9.9 XTR. Leaning towards the Fuel EXe for a few different reasons. First, it looks like an acoustical bike and can be ridden like one with no battery. Second, the weight of the bike and battery. What I want to be able to do is, being able to carry an extra battery in a backpack. The range extender is nice, but since the battery is so small; why not just get a 2nd battery. Third. I like the ability to remotely monitor your air pressure in the shocks and tires. Only wish this was an add on options for the lower end bikes. I like the 750Wh smart system on the Rail but the size of the battery is big. Just don't think I would be able to carry a 2nd battery. The only other problem is the availably of each model. What I go with will depend on what's available at that time. Yes, both bikes are very high end bikes. But if I don't pull the trigger now, I don't think things with the economy will be improving in the next year or so. So, it's now or look at lower end ebikes or a non-ebike! Great video! A lot of good useful information for me.

Tell me about it. I live in Southern California and 85% of the trails I ride, ebikes are prohibited. We ALL ride them/ Class 1 anyway and have no issues with the Rangers. Not to mention that bike shop employees also ride ebikes at times on these same trails, so it's ridiculous that they are illegal to ride.

Right on! My dad will be 89 in Dec and he has a levo and goes with on our less technical rides. He usually rides in trail and turbo mode. My wife has a levo and she rides in mostly eco and a little trail mode I ride a non e bike and we all go together and we all get just we need! These bikes can bring people together in ways i never thought possible. So good for you whatever gets out there Man!
Hi John, I just turned 62 and got the 9.7 exe, the thing I've noticed is that on my stumpy doing a 40km ride is go hard for a time then spin pedals for a while to recuperate whilst on the trek it's go hard all the time. I'm rinsed at the end on both but on the trek it took less time. I'm sold.
As waiting for hip replacement I have gone from 100/150 ks a week to zero, I went to spokentrail Noosa and hired the Levo and the sl and then tried a rail and finally the fuel. I couldn’t go past the ride feel and lack of motor noise on the Trek. First trek I have owned and probably my favourite bike after a Nukeproof reactor which I just loved but was also fit and healthy then. I think after my surgery the fuel exe will really shine in low settings at bike park but for now I am doing everything I can to not send this machine it’s soooo good
I just bought a 9.7 Ex-E especially because it feels natural, and light, almost like an analog bike. And the silence ! Paired with the Charger 3 Lyrik Ultimate (silent action fork) and my Onyx Hub 👌👌👌 no sound but the tires on the trail, perfection.
Have 2020 Heckler and people can say what they want, but Shimano has stood behind their motor and turn around was very fast compared to some people I know who had issues with other brands. In the States (US), Shimano service is much easier than some of the other brands. I'll give up some buttery smoothness for the service and response.
Where the industry should go… I would like to see that TQ motor with a little more power, match with a gearbox so that we get rid of the derailleur and cassette in the back, making the suspension work better, and the chain would last longer and would not snap when shifting under torque.
@@zed5129 gearbox should be more reliable than derailleur. Also, the shifting could be synchronized with motor cutoff to allow smoother shifting. My motor is not serviceable already , so i don’t see a bigger issue there.

After testing the EXe If I had to choose only one ebike to ride there is no contest I would go with a Bosch powered full ebike. The EXe felt way underpowered even with all the settings turned up was not as powerful as my Rail on Eco mode.
Im in the position right now where I could sell my analog bike and buy the EXE 9.8, but all my friends ride analog. I dont want the dynamic to change in the group...tough call.they are all 10 yrs younger than me (I'm 55),
Patrick I would say your the perfect person to buy a super light it would change the dynamics of the group what we were talking about was riding full powered ebikes with superlights

Why the hate for the EP8? I consistently ride my Carbon Rise on average 19 miles, 3100ft. about 1:40 ride time. 155 BPM HR and still have 15-20% battery left.
I am in Madrid now, and had 2 rides with your neighbours :-) saw the Trek, 2 of them on the trails...looks really interesting, although it all depends where you ride. Not sure it is enough or can replace full ebike if you have huge climbs.
Whenever i listen to normal bike tech reviewers i always need to take whatever they say with a grain of salt. There's a sam pilgrim inside of me...i destroyed every bike as a child. Used a city bike on a beginner dh trail, jumped a kiddy bike without much skills and i never had a mtb with 100mm+ travel. I'm probably overforked with 140mm but maybe I'll love it cause i can go at higher speeds. Still riding a 26er xc bike with geometry from the late nineties
Sam… regarding parts eventually breaking, my 2019 Trek Powerfly motor recently stopped working after less than 1700 miles. Four weeks in the shop, replacing nearly all related parts now has me needing a new motor! I’m a year outside warranty but have always serviced at Trek per recommended maintenance plan. How would you respond? BTW, I’ve bought multiple Trek bikes, including the latest Fuel EXe.
That sucks i would have a word to the manager at the bike shop you bought all your treks through and ask for the motor for cost price… that’s what I would do
weight & non ebike look still important ,California & many states start imposing restriction of ebike use.If manufactures don't care for the US market bulid more discrete ebike fewer mountain biker will use them .i used to ride with a group .now only half can go to the common trail because of those ebike restriction!
Motor noise is a BIG deal to me because I don't want the mtb snobs pointing fingers at me when I pass them by on a climb with just one hand on the handle bars. Seriously, I'm looking for a stealth bike and noise is a BIG deal.
Specialized shop where I live are the worst. They have a massive complain if your mtb was in the same post code as a puddle. They’re just crap to deal with.

You can get 2 pretty awesome trails 30-45mins from the city; Lysterfield is more endurance and used to be the Commonwealth Games mtb circuit, pretty much my go-to to get fit and a few good double blacks there. Then there’s Plenty Gorge which has all your jumps and also a circuit around the gorge. The Derby group who did the trails in Tasmania just renovated Warburton trails and that’s supposed to be awesome too, about 1.5hrs out from city and then there’s Bright (4hrs) with chairlift for you and bike and all downhill. Heaps to do and a trail for everyone at any competency
Based on where I’ve seen you ride, you would definitely love Lysterfield and can do Warburton same day and then go Plenty Gorge another day. The Yue Yangs are more advanced, but you’d be fine and also would love that
So whats the big deal about this 15.000 € bike? I ride my fazua evation powered ezesty ( developed in2018, 18.4 kg) for 32 km and 777hm with an average speed of 14.9 km/h and still got 20% of my 250Wh battery… for half the price of the trek fuel exe! I dont get this media hype
I've always wondered why anyone cares about how much noise an electric bike drivetrain makes. None of them are so loud that it's making any difference anywhere
I think the people who are bothered by a motor noise are not authentic mtb's. Any real mtb bikers (legends ;) ) will be use to the noise of smashing a bike down the hill and pedalling hard to get back up. People moaning about bits of noise here and there are ... well how can I put it.... they're wining pussies:)

@@SamsBikes yeah… a smaller range extender would have been great and surely enough! But again, one battery is more than sufficient for after-work rides. The next Rotwild R.X will have a range extender and I‘m very excited about that one!

Great chat with Tom and good to hear his perspective on quite a few bikes. You both touched on the cost of bikes in general these days and I agree, they are way overpriced in many cases. Hence in my case, I bought the TREK 9.7 EXe as the 9.8 was just that bit extra that it was out of my budget. Very happy with the 9.7, apart from the fact that we are unable to get the extender battery until December some time. Bikes were sold here in NZ with the understanding that the extenders would be here in October, but as usual.....delayed!! Good show Sam, keep up the good banter.....

This video made me do my own range test and I have not even finished watching it, hh. I have Orbea Rise M (360w battery), 83kg, fully maxed settings - 1178 height meters, 20km length. Going down easy trails, going up mixed tarmac and gravel.
That’s really impressive mate! Orbea did some magic with good battery cells and great firmware!
@@SamsBikes I guess. I cant compare much since it is my first emtb. The battery has one downside though, it requires slow charging, 5 hours for full charge is a lot. I heard there will be new 385w battery for next years rise, it should be even lighter and I hope for faster charging.
Thanks for the interview with Tom. Love the mid assist options and especially the Fuel EXe. Looks like the TQ is making a lot of motor manufactures get a little nervous.
I'm in the market for an e-mtb. Hoping they will release a TQ 50nM fully with 160mm+ travel in the back and lower price point.
I've been riding my RadRover 6 Plus fat tire ebike now for 6 months, over 1100 miles. Love the bike but it's a tank, weights over 80lbs! I need something lighter and can be rode even if the battery is dead.
I am very close to getting a Trek ebike. Going back and forth between the Rail 9.9 XXI AXS and the Fuel EXe 9.9 XTR. Leaning towards the Fuel EXe for a few different reasons. First, it looks like an acoustical bike and can be ridden like one with no battery.
Second, the weight of the bike and battery. What I want to be able to do is, being able to carry an extra battery in a backpack. The range extender is nice, but since the battery is so small; why not just get a 2nd battery.
Third. I like the ability to remotely monitor your air pressure in the shocks and tires. Only wish this was an add on options for the lower end bikes.
I like the 750Wh smart system on the Rail but the size of the battery is big. Just don't think I would be able to carry a 2nd battery. The only other problem is the availably of each model. What I go with will depend on what's available at that time. Yes, both bikes are very high end bikes. But if I don't pull the trigger now, I don't think things with the economy will be improving in the next year or so. So, it's now or look at lower end ebikes or a non-ebike!

Hey Tom and Sam great interview!! Im 59 years old and I ride a non e-bike my wife has a gen 3 levo. She mostly rides with me in eco or trail and we have a blast! Sadly Here in the US, the e bike trail access is a real issue......the Fuel Ex may be a game changer in some places. Curious how many people recognize its a e bike? Thanks so much!

Tell me about it. I live in Southern California and 85% of the trails I ride, ebikes are prohibited. We ALL ride them/ Class 1 anyway and have no issues with the Rangers. Not to mention that bike shop employees also ride ebikes at times on these same trails, so it's ridiculous that they are illegal to ride.

Right on! My dad will be 89 in Dec and he has a levo and goes with on our less technical rides. He usually rides in trail and turbo mode. My wife has a levo and she rides in mostly eco and a little trail mode I ride a non e bike and we all go together and we all get just we need! These bikes can bring people together in ways i never thought possible. So good for you whatever gets out there Man!

Hi John, I just turned 62 and got the 9.7 exe, the thing I've noticed is that on my stumpy doing a 40km ride is go hard for a time then spin pedals for a while to recuperate whilst on the trek it's go hard all the time. I'm rinsed at the end on both but on the trek it took less time. I'm sold.
As waiting for hip replacement I have gone from 100/150 ks a week to zero, I went to spokentrail Noosa and hired the Levo and the sl and then tried a rail and finally the fuel. I couldn’t go past the ride feel and lack of motor noise on the Trek. First trek I have owned and probably my favourite bike after a Nukeproof reactor which I just loved but was also fit and healthy then. I think after my surgery the fuel exe will really shine in low settings at bike park but for now I am doing everything I can to not send this machine it’s soooo good

I just bought a 9.7 Ex-E especially because it feels natural, and light, almost like an analog bike.
And the silence ! Paired with the Charger 3 Lyrik Ultimate (silent action fork) and my Onyx Hub 👌👌👌 no sound but the tires on the trail, perfection.
I'd love to know range at the middle power setting with and without the extender.
The quiet factor is important if and only if the traditional hum of electric motors distract from the ride.
What about weight of riders, tyres and conditions?
The amount of sales tax on 26 bikes is a substantial number. Good episode with a bit less arm waving and some good info.

Have 2020 Heckler and people can say what they want, but Shimano has stood behind their motor and turn around was very fast compared to some people I know who had issues with other brands. In the States (US), Shimano service is much easier than some of the other brands. I'll give up some buttery smoothness for the service and response.
Yep to be honest the shimano isn’t bad it’s just it’s not as good as the others right now but that will change.

I would like to see that TQ motor with a little more power, match with a gearbox so that we get rid of the derailleur and cassette in the back, making the suspension work better, and the chain would last longer and would not snap when shifting under torque.
Yep I would love to see a gear box but I think shimano and sram love to sell us chains and derailleur’s
@@zed5129 gearbox should be more reliable than derailleur. Also, the shifting could be synchronized with motor cutoff to allow smoother shifting. My motor is not serviceable already , so i don’t see a bigger issue there.

After testing the EXe If I had to choose only one ebike to ride there is no contest I would go with a Bosch powered full ebike. The EXe felt way underpowered even with all the settings turned up was not as powerful as my Rail on Eco mode.

Why the hate for the EP8? I consistently ride my Carbon Rise on average 19 miles, 3100ft. about 1:40 ride time. 155 BPM HR and still have 15-20% battery left.

I am in Madrid now, and had 2 rides with your neighbours :-) saw the Trek, 2 of them on the trails...looks really interesting, although it all depends where you ride. Not sure it is enough or can replace full ebike if you have huge climbs.
Whenever i listen to normal bike tech reviewers i always need to take whatever they say with a grain of salt. There's a sam pilgrim inside of me...i destroyed every bike as a child. Used a city bike on a beginner dh trail, jumped a kiddy bike without much skills and i never had a mtb with 100mm+ travel. I'm probably overforked with 140mm but maybe I'll love it cause i can go at higher speeds. Still riding a 26er xc bike with geometry from the late nineties

Sam… regarding parts eventually breaking, my 2019 Trek Powerfly motor recently stopped working after less than 1700 miles. Four weeks in the shop, replacing nearly all related parts now has me needing a new motor! I’m a year outside warranty but have always serviced at Trek per recommended maintenance plan. How would you respond?
BTW, I’ve bought multiple Trek bikes, including the latest Fuel EXe.
That sucks i would have a word to the manager at the bike shop you bought all your treks through and ask for the motor for cost price… that’s what I would do

weight & non ebike look still important ,California & many states start imposing restriction of ebike use.If manufactures don't care for the US market bulid more discrete ebike fewer mountain biker will use them .i used to ride with a group .now only half can go to the common trail because of those ebike restriction!

You can get 2 pretty awesome trails 30-45mins from the city; Lysterfield is more endurance and used to be the Commonwealth Games mtb circuit, pretty much my go-to to get fit and a few good double blacks there. Then there’s Plenty Gorge which has all your jumps and also a circuit around the gorge. The Derby group who did the trails in Tasmania just renovated Warburton trails and that’s supposed to be awesome too, about 1.5hrs out from city and then there’s Bright (4hrs) with chairlift for you and bike and all downhill. Heaps to do and a trail for everyone at any competency
Based on where I’ve seen you ride, you would definitely love Lysterfield and can do Warburton same day and then go Plenty Gorge another day. The Yue Yangs are more advanced, but you’d be fine and also would love that

So whats the big deal about this 15.000 € bike? I ride my fazua evation powered ezesty ( developed in2018, 18.4 kg) for 32 km and 777hm with an average speed of 14.9 km/h and still got 20% of my 250Wh battery… for half the price of the trek fuel exe! I dont get this media hype

I think the people who are bothered by a motor noise are not authentic mtb's. Any real mtb bikers (legends ;) ) will be use to the noise of smashing a bike down the hill and pedalling hard to get back up. People moaning about bits of noise here and there are ... well how can I put it.... they're wining pussies:)
