He fell in love with someone and she became the world to him, and she loved him too, for a time, but when she left he didn't force her to stay or pressure her on why she left, he simply let her go as she wished. He remembered her for his whole life, and well after it, but he merely looked back on and savored the good times he'd had with her to get him through life's struggles. When Kel comes along, struggling from losing a loved one similarly to him, George still took the time to help her get past it without losing the memories she had.

You are right but... I feel like he had neglected him self by dedicating these emotions to someone he cared about for his whole life knowing full well he cant be with them. It's a heartwarming testament but I cant help but shed a few tears over the fact that he never got to share his heart with someone else till the day he died. This is just my perspective.

This song really hits differently now.
It was never one of my favorites, just a song I thought sounded nice when my little brother showed it to me. But now, I've never related to something more.
About half a year ago, one of the most important people in my life was taken from me. I still miss them terribly. I was thinking about them thinking about this song, and I may or may not have sung it to myself alone in my room a few times trying not to cry. Every waking second of my life reminds me of them and it makes me feel so horrible.
We had been friends for years but had only dated for two. A few months before our second anniversary, I realized I wasn't in love, and that romance wasn't something I was ready for, however, I was too scared to tell the truth. Very shortly after our second anniversary, as well as their birthday, they sent me multiple messages about how they loved me, and how they were sorry. I didn't see a single one until it was too late. They disappeared for weeks, and I was the only one who knew what happened.
Day after day, my friends would ask where they went, but I never had the heart to tell them that they had committed suicide, so I told them they must have been sick, and that's why they wouldn't come to school. A month went by, and people were really worried. A joke started that they were dead, and it was just a joke to them, but I knew.
A month later, my best friend and I were on our way to breakfast and we got a text in a group chat that had been dead for a long time. I still remember how shocked I was, but it was from our missing friend. They weren't successful, which is great, but they were sent to a hospital for three months.
That's great, right? Almost two months had passed, so only one more and we would see each other again, right?
That was April eleventh, at 10:05 AM. Today is August eleventh. Four months after the text, six months after the attempt. I was allowed to contact them once until they found out that we were in an lgbtq relationship and forbade any more contact. They plan to hold them for longer despite them being better and from what I know, they've been treating them unfairly. There is a very high chance I may not see them again for years. I miss them so much, and my life has gone horribly downhill. I've been depressed, angry, and just not myself.
Sorry there wasn't a happy ending, but maybe someday in the distant future, there will be. Till then.
Edit: 8 months after the incident, good news, they came back. Things are almost normal again, and I'm so grateful. Thanks to the 8 people I know who read this. Things are looking up, everyone :)
Edit 2: I'm back four months later, four o’clock in the morning able to sing this song and dance happily again. My little band of dumbasses is back together and even bigger now. Depression’s been kicking my ass lately, but at least I know I’m not alone. And to anyone who decided to read all this, you aren't either. Talk to your bros, parents, or hell, even I’m here. Don’t let yourself fall into the hole I'm trying to crawl out of. Cheers, y’all.

I really think that Brenda is the character that George is referring to in the song. The character design of the person is very similar to Brenda and in the dancing sequence (nevermind the fact that it's dancing, the thing Brenda is known for) at 1:18 George flies onto the stage. If we say that this could be a reference to how he is the Hummingbird, which can hover and fly just like that, and with how the figure he's dancing with, bounces onto the stage, we could infer that maybe it's making her out to appear like a rabbit, which is what Brenda is associated with. George seems like such a gentleman. He is kind and optimistic, and always looks ok the bright side. He respected his wife for leaving him, and did not hold a grudge on her. He was still in love with her even when she left. Also, he must have been brave considering it showed that he went into the military, possibly for a war.

I remember this is exactly how I felt about my first love. I used to be angry because I was scared myself.
I was scared of being alone because I didn't think they really could ever love me. They were just as kind and respectful as George. I think about them everyday and I hope they're happy and in a better situation than they were 5 years ago when we broke up.
They were my best friend, and my insecurity was not healthy for them. I'm learning to be a better person everyday, but I don't think I'll ever love anyone the same way.
my comments probably gonna be buried, but i still wanted to say that this is a beautiful, heart warming (i'm guessing because i don't have one) , and incredibly well made, in both the visual and auditorial aspects, it's really just incredible all around and really touched my soul, i would have teared up if i had tear glands. the story was also magnificent and i gives props to the animator and song writer, not to mention the vocals were perfect, take my like, you deserve it, and more honestly.

There’s no way this chick isn’t Brenda.
First of all, it would make sense that he missed her. She died young ish due to paralysis, as we know from still dancing. That means he wasn’t just, hung up on an ex, he would miss her when she was paralysed/died.
The girl in the vid looks extremely like Brenda. Same side swept bangs and small trails down the front.
In hospital, a hummingbird sits on the windowsill of brendas ward in still dancing.
At 1:21 the girl strings George into a dance, where she leads. Brenda was a professional dancer as we know, so if the girl is leading that’s probably Brenda teaching George how to dance when the two where together.
When the ghosts meet, Brenda and George’s ghosts are always the first to meet and act as if they recognise each other. Like at 3:19, George does a once over when brenda touches his hand.
It makes sense George wrote Brenda songs a lot, if she was a dancer he probably wrote her songs to perform to.
The woman that cares for George on his deathbed looks like brendas daughter grown up.
I also think that George might’ve not been around to say goodbye to Brenda, and missed it in the war. Maybe that’s why he doesn’t fully recognise her being dead. So there’s a whole ton of evidence that leads to Brenda being dating George.
