      I don't think that paying for something like an online IQ test is necessarily a scam. Although it very well could be at times. But I'm more suspicious of things that are offered for free like anti-virus software and advertisements. Like, imagine if a plumber fixed some shit for you and then at the end says, "It's on the house." You would immediately think "Well, that pun was awful, and also what the fuck did he actually do if he's not gonna charge me for his time and labor?"

    Many years ago, I had a middle-aged man with an IQ well below 70 working for me in a machine shop. He had some physical abnormalities, such as fingertips which were enormous (other workers called him 'ET' because of his odd hands) and nostrils so large that he used the handle of a bowl brush wrapped with toilet paper to clean out his nose (because his fingertips wouldn't fit inside his nostrils).
    A dog was easier to train, but once trained he could load parts into a vise or fixture on a CNC machine tool that would mill the parts to very precise dimensions and tolerances. The accuracy required in the parts loading process for the expensive castings was tedious and frustrating to people of average or above average intelligence, but this man simply wasn't intelligent enough to become bored or frustrated.
    There is a place in society for people of all intelligence levels but finding that place can be very difficult. Most employers are not willing to invest the excessive amount of time and effort required to train people of below average intelligence.

    I have worked with a number of lower IQ guys before and what I came to understand about them is, they tend to have one or two things they have a knack at despite their disability. When you find that knack they have you can more effectively give them work they can potentially thrive at. They would usually get put with me as a helper to gauge for apprentice work, because I was the patient and mellow guy in the shops.

      I have an iq of 85, and its not so easy, but persistance is key, we can learn certain things if its not beyond our comprehension, for example programming would be too much, but learning design, and wordpress, that kinda stuff is pretty easy, just takes persistance, and you can be successful.
      The thing I noticed, that was life changing for me, was to be open minded, and to listen to people who are much smarter than me... that realisation changed my whole world.

    • @psychedelictacos9118
      @psychedelictacos9118 Місяць тому

      @Marconel100 Do you really have an I.Q. of 85?? You seem smarter than this. Did you actually take a real I.Q. test administered by somebody trained in intelligence testing such as a clinical psychologist?? Because so many people in the comments seem to know their I.Q. when in fact it is quite rare that people take an actual I.Q. test that is not an unreliable test online!

    • @paullowman9131
      @paullowman9131 24 дні тому +2

      stephensanderson, "IQ" can shift, but it does take effort and it's frustrating. Despite what Dr. Peterson says here, I'm not sure that IQ tests are really that comprehensive in determining ability, although what he relates here is alarming. Try to stay informed and work that brain of yours; that thing is like a muscle, it gets stronger with use. You just might shock yourself on how well you can improve, if you are really motivated and work hard at it. Also, learn to listen to others; that alone can do wonders. And btw, "smarts" doesn't always translate to "wise"; in fact, it rarely does. Peace and out.

    • @psychedelictacos9118
      @psychedelictacos9118 24 дні тому

      @Marconel100 I don't think your I.Q. is 85. WordPress would be too much for somebody on this level, and most people struggle with programming at the beginning, even really smart people. Yes, I do think that obviously not everyone in the population could, but most people with pretty standard intelligence could if they just persisted and practised everyday. Programming is just a skill like no other no more than how learning to read Chinese must seem overly complicated to someone learning to read and speak Chinese, yet most people in China can!

    I have a low IQ, resulting in very difficult school years 1-12. But in the trades, I could focus my attention and develop hand/eye skills, and slowly acquire the mind development to see the finished job completed in all steps before it began. I did very well and made a good comfortable living by living small. The trades also gave me the extra time (7:00am to 3:30pm workday) to develop many other skills outside of my trade. I became a musician in solo piano and solo guitar. Then added audio engineering skills to record my own music. I eventually became a business owner using my skills learned over 40 years in and out of the trades. I am now a professional:
    1) Graphic Designer
    2) Illustrator
    3) Photographer (portrait and product)
    4) Photo retouch and press ink specialist
    5) Type setter at 50wpm

    In 9th grade I was tested at an 84 level of IQ. Truth be told I hated school at the time, was skipping classes and using drugs a lot. I took the IQ test high and essentially bullshitted my way through it. I later dropped out of high school due to increasing mental health issues. Fast forward 10+ years and I'm now working on becoming a programmer, something that I actually excel in. It turns out that I have aspergers and ADHD. It made school and that environment really challenging for me, and they didn't realize it at the time. Struggled to hold most jobs as they involved social interaction and it burned me out horribly. I guess my point is that for some of us it comes down to not having the right ecosystem to thrive in. I haven't taken an IQ test since and have no interest in really knowing now. I feel pretty content and competent in the level of intelligence I'm at despite that initial 84 IQ assessment.

    I always felt on the dumb side of average. In middle school I was given an IQ test because they thought I might need special classes and I scored a 122. I don't remember which of the two major test they used at the time but I still felt dumb. As I got older(late 20's) I realised what it was. I was not driven and lazy. My parents didn't care as long as I passed so I always shot for exactly that, barely passing, the lazy way out. Knowing this still doesn't make me feel any smarter. On a good note at least I have people at work that always come to me with questions. One guy told me I was the smartest person in our department so he'd ask me his question. My first reaction in my mind when I hear things like this, "is this a joke or are you being sarcastic?" when I realise it's neither I feel embarrassed because I don't deserve those words. I don't feel smart.
    Edit just because I know something or might be able to solve someone's problem doesn't make me smart.

      IDK how much you listen to Peterson, but he's got some pretty interesting takes on intelligence, long term planning and industriousness. Apparently, intelligence is the most important factor in your success in life, however, industriousness is almost as important as intelligence.
      The interesting thing is that there is no overlap between intelligence and industriousness. So, a lot of very intelligent people don't succeed to the point that they could because they don't have the ability to plan longer term and work diligently to achieve those goals.

      Yeah, that’s the other side of the Dunning-Krueger effect. You only don’t think you’re intelligent because you assume that everyone else knows all the stuff you know. They don’t. That’s why they keep asking you things.
      I have this issue myself in regards to math. I’m very intelligent, and very good at math specifically, but I don’t feel like I’m very good at it because my little brother is much better. He’s taking calculus 3 in college right now and the best I could do was pre-calc. But people ask me for help with all kinds of math problems and I’m always just surprised they don’t know how to do these kinds of things. So, no, just because people ask you for help doesn’t mean you’re intelligent, but that is the way you can compare what you know to how much everybody else knows. You might not know much in the grand scheme of things, but that’s because no one human being can ever know any significant portion of everything that can be known. Just because you aren’t intelligent in absolute terms (because no one can be) doesn’t mean that you aren’t relatively intelligent.

      I like how Jordan Peterson mentioned Charles Murray in this because people claim he is a racist due to the data he discovered regarding IQ and ethnicity (it’s why the left wants to ban guys like Peterson because he sneaks such information into his rhetoric). As for people with subpar IQs, I do think there could be some positive attributes in it from the past which is why the attribute persists. Some of the best athletes in the world for example (football players, basketball players, sprinters, etc.) have an IQ below 85. One of the advantages of being an NFL athlete for example is to process things fast in real time and react quickly in accordance with that stimuli. Having a high IQ or even average IQ isn’t necessary for this and can perhaps even hinder such reactions.
      Having high IQ often shows an ability to plan ahead, see patterns regarding the future, and being proactive in that regard seeing problems and adjusting before such problems even occur. However when it comes to running, jumping, seeing something quick and reacting to it physically, having a higher IQ can lead to such things like analysis paralysis as such people are more future minded as opposed to living and reacting in the present. Meanwhile athletes have no problem living in the present where their athletic career literally depends on it and reacting quickly in moment, pivot and change on the fly accordingly. The problem with them is that they are living in modern civilization and not on the plains somewhere hunting some big game.
      Have you ever wondered why so many top tier athletes who are paid millions often end up broke? They have the brain to respond quickly in the present but lack the brain for any future planning or think far enough into the future to see any potential patterns that could lead to problems. Our civilization is being built and maintained by people who can recognize patterns and solve long term problems into the future that is sustainable for our society which is not a strength for a person who has a low IQ. However I maintain that such people exist as a relic and connection to our past as some do actually have amazing physical abilities that is unhindered from future thinking and relies solely on living in the present. There is a certain vibrancy to such thinking that unfortunately doesn’t translate to modernity.

The reason? Mostly that so little in their life was exiting. Normal stuff where too boring and uneventful. They where stuck in a situation where they where too intelligent for normal events to be exiteful, and yet to unmotivated to do anything else. Like a mental prision. having a high IQ seems to have som dark consequenses not often revealed.

    5 years later and this pops up on my feed for some reason.
    Just wanted to add that the military actually doesn't give a sh*t about IQ.
    I tried to get into the RAF in 1999...
    I took their aptitude test, that was supposed to take 2 hours... and passed it 100% in less than 15 minutes.
    They were concerned I had cheated, so they set me a different aptitude test which required me to memorise as much detail as possible in a 30 minute video.
    Colours of shirts worn by people in the video, names of shops on facias of storefronts in photographs, how many trees there were on a roadside in a segment that showed footage of a street, etc etc.
    I passed that 100% as I have an eidetic memory.
    I can instantly recall over 1000 different phone numbers as well.
    I tried to explain to the RAF that I can memorise Bible sized amounts of text, and had passed my driving test by memorising the 2 theory test books (which have every possible question and answer to the UK's driving test) from cover to cover and had passed that test which was meant to take 45 minutes, 100% within the space of 4 minutes.
    But because they were concerned I had cheated, and then tested me with another 3 different IQ tests over a 6 week period... they came out at 203, 208, and 217.
    They then decided to send me to 6 different physical examinations over another 12 week period.
    After I'd gone through more weeks of testing than basic training would have taken, they decided to not take me into the RAF because I wear glasses.

Our son has taught us a lot. He just loves us and what he loves. He's not complicated in his wants and needs. There is no malice. There is joy for smallest of things- a pretty book cover for example. I view everyone differently. I chat with the person picking up leaves in the park or collect rubbish after the high school kids visit during their break time. I would be beyond proud if our son could manage to do such a job one day. It doesn't look likely yet so it's a big dream. Never judge. Neuro-typical people often treat our students with autism, Down's syndrome, etc., as if they're invisible, or worse, they insult them. Getting them into steady jobs IS very difficult, but the options are pretty much on the couch, at a day stay (IF the family has the money to pay for it, and IF a very hard-to-get spot in one is available), or maybe even institutionalization if things are bad enough. These are people, they have feelings, and they often try so very hard in a world that doesn't welcome them once they've set foot outside of the protection of the school system. Then, it's a free-fall.

    The problem with Peterson's argument is that he assumes the military is willing to accept anyone who can be trained for a basic job. But, the reality is the military needs people who can be successful at basic supervision. This is because everyone enlisted in the military needs to be able to achieve a sergeant level or higher. Outside the Gomer Pyle TV show, there are no career Privates in the military. So, the military isn't looking just for someone who can operate a machine, cook a meal, etc, but they need people who can supervise a few people operating a machine, cooking meals, etc. They need people who can become a department manager, not just a worker bee.

    There was a very simple test that I took while I was in high-school known as the instructions test or the paying attention test. The test can range from ten to thirty questions if done correctly but it tests something very important to the ability of the test taker to properly follow directions and remember instructions. The first instruction/ question is to write your name along the top or bottom in a specific way. The second to date it in a certain way. The third is to read all further instructions before taking any actions. The last instruction/ question is to ignore all instructions after the third except the last. All instructions/ questions between the third and last don't matter and could be any indication/ question because those don't really matter they are actually only there to insure that the person is actually following the instructions and paying attention to them. Yes this is a type of intelligence test and it does show exactly how much attention that the group or person you are testing is capable of.

    • @R3_Live
      @R3_Live 7 місяців тому +4

      I've had these tests before, but I would disagree that they are an intelligence test. Maybe slightly. But I think they are more of a test of someone's patience or trust. Mainly because the most probable cause for people failing this test isn't due to a lack of comprehension but due to a lack of patience; so they would comprehend the instruction telling them to read all instructions but would then deliberately chose to disregard it because they believe it would result in them doing less work or completing the test faster.

    • @jedstanaland2897
      @jedstanaland2897 7 місяців тому +1

      @R3_Live Remember the person who is reading the questions isn't paying proper attention to the text on the page and therefore they don't comprehend what the questions are saying. This is a problem with so many different things I wasn't calling it a true intelligence test I was calling it either a comprehension test or a paying attention test. Typically the majority of people are so focused on how they think things should be that they disregard the truth about the test and sometimes the world as a whole too. The reason why I talked about it was because this has because a massive problem with the world today.

      @@jedstanaland2897my brother is an engineer with a paper from the uni. I am not.
      We bought parts to build PCs, full build each. I read the instructions, he did not.
      Mine worked upon pressing the start button, his didn't boot at all. I asked him did you read the instructions? "No I'm an engineer I can figure it out."
      He learned CAD at uni. I learned it in my room making things.
      We have the same job at different places, almost the same salary. Two different paths, sameish career result (I'm also younger) but I would dare say I'm more competent than him. He's never actually made anything himself at all.
      This adds to your point because there is a difference between skills on paper and actually making things happen. Reading instructions is basically understanding how to make something specific happen, how to get a particular result. Something so complex as a computer with different parts and cables that have to be specifically placed according to the instructions and labels can't just be done randomly, there's a pattern to follow.
      JP says many times it's hard to be creative because it's very hard to make a new pattern that actually works iteratively. People who fail the test you speak of are of lower IQ for sure, because it does show a lack of patience and attentiveness, as well as observation before action, all key signs of a higher level of intellect if displayed.
      Ironically these are the same type of people who will participate in things without thinking about the consequences. Insert vague reference to forced medical inoculations.

      Umm... have you seen assembly instructions lately? They are literally in another language or have no words at all. You can thank cheaply made in China products for that. Sometimes you need an IQ of 200 just to decipher what the hell is in the instructions. It certainly isn't English.

    Knew quite a couple of people with learning difficulties, struggled reading a letter, kicked my ass in woodwork, physical activities etc. Some people find it difficult to express themselves academically, but express themselves perfectly in a physical environment and in a normal social situation without trying to sound intelligent. The messages come across. The feelings are the same and you can connect. Yes, when it comes to certain things, there is a struggle more often than one is used to, but everyone has that feature about them, whether it's often or less. It's the way things are.

      Yes, but then your intelligence test is flawed. This video is mentioning a group that is also struggling at that level.
      It isn't , you suck at reading / mind things and are good at physical things or good in a very specific field.
      The problem is that our whole society is becoming so complex that for a growing part of the population it is very hard to participate, not get taken advantage of or be mechanized/automated out of work.
      And these people aren't happy simple lives. They know they struggle compared to others. The bar is just that much higher for them.

      @@troyberdahl5922 While I agree with the point, I kinda disagree with the statement. I'd call that Wisdom.
      Wisdom is your total, compiled knowledgebase. Intelligence is your mental capacity to understand, use and apply your knowledge.

    Take it from someone in the top 1%. We have a hard time understanding how those beow 135 can survive in this modern society. It was not until I adopted a child with ADHD and Aspegers that I came to realize how hard it was for the majority of people to deal with a more and more technical world, if not imposible. I grew up in a tracked educational environment and spent my entire puplic school experience with the same thirty people, We never had to interface with the 'NORMAL' students. We continued on in higher education in the honors schools of our chosen fields of study. Still never having to experience the context of the 'NORMAL EDUCIONAL EXPERIENCE'. The rude awakening came when we entered the real world of work and had to interface with employees that we could not understand the lack of mental ability there in.
    Over fifty years of being an owner and manager, I experienced a steady decline in the mental capacity of those entering the workforce. I pity those reponsible for the productivity of the future. I fear for the future of all.

      I will lift people from extreme poverty and thanks to this video I have one more massive issue i need to solve.
      How the hell you train someone with low iq to get a high paying skill (software programmer for example ) ? Is everyone on extreme poverty for 10+ years dumb or it is just a resource issue ( education and capital to be uplifted) ?
