thank you for taking the time to do this, I thought it was very helpfull. I have the Tube version of this mic, I have used it on some vocals and it does have that "old warm" side of the sound. I bet it would sound great paired with my AKG c-12.
Great review dude! Not everyone gives the storage details you mention! That's very important for these mics! Nice job on playing almost every instrument known! haha!
Thanks for the video!!! What about the noise floor? It sounds good to me!! I have bought a Cascade Victor after reading a lot of good stuff about it, however I am so not happy with it. The noise floor is high. I have an Apogee Duet with a 75db mic pres, I have as well tried it with the Cloudlifter and still noisy!! Please your thoughts on that. Shall I go with the Golden Age Project R1 MKII Passive?
Just bought this mic because I have a harsh voice and I have found it sounds warmer and friendlier, I have paired it with a DBX 286s and a focusrite 2i4 and it sounds great on spoken word. I did try it with a good outboard preamp into the 2i4 but I can get a better sound with the DBX.
Great review! I own GAP LARGE CONDENSER FC1 & FC3 MICS... AMAZING SOUNDING, VERSITILE, TRANSFORMER BASED MICS... SOUND AND RECORD BEAUTIFUL; YOU'RE DEMO CONVINCED ME TO PULL THE TRIGGER ON THIS 🍯 HONEY GIRL 🎀 RIBBON! THANX
what you said about proximity effect is false. figure eight doesn't necessarily have less proximity effect than cardioid, in fact ribbons often have more proximity effect than cardioid condensers/dynamics. And omni microphones can't even be compared, because they have absolutely no proximity effect what so ever (unless the directionality is created by adding two cardioid capsules like in a multi-pattern condenser).
May I suggest on the guitar take, please consider taking a piece of paper and covering the sound hole. This should bring the ribbon alive and eliminate the boomy bottom.
Also, have you tried it with a different preamp? cause the R1's output impedance is 600 ohm and the pre73's max input impedance is 1200 ohm, and that's probably causing a lot of frequency response variation.
Hey I just picked up the active version & noticed some noise (hiss) on mine. Is this typical of the Golden Age Ribbons? I've tried cheaper ribbons on my set up and they ran much cleaner.
Most Likely not, the problem occurs when you are using a patchbay in a professional studio as you plug into the bay with the tiny telephone cable the ring quickly makes contact with the ground and carries the 48v directly Into the ribbon element vaporizing it. If pins 2+3 are shorted in your XLR or in the mic connector itself you will most def vaporize it. That being said use a cathedral pipes, or a CL-1 cloud lifer inline if you are super concerned about it. ENAK microphone repair can re ribbon almost anything for a reasonable price as well. Local Spiderman out.
Phantom power doesn't travel through the transformer which is between the ribbon and the output. Ribbons are too light to sag if stored on its side, The ribbons are strong these days and wind will not ruin the ribbon. Indeed feeding the myths...
Thanks. Awesome review

Thanks for the review, and hey, you're not a bad singer dude!
store ribbon mics upright
You used a Vox! Made my day. The mic sounds pretty darn cool, albeit a bit boomy on both the uke and the guitar. Might be the placement though.
ITS OVER $9000!!!!!!!

good avg test
Good video. I'm picking one of these up today, as well as the GAP73 MK2. What preamp and recording set-up did you use for this video?
Good vid. For fingerstyle acoustic guitar is there an advantage to pairing one of these with a small condensor rather than using two of these?

A lesson and training manual. Nice!

Pointed it right at the soundhole on that Martin, eek
Hello Ian Paice !
I am currently looking for a singing mic for around 200 dollars,
this seems like a good one, but i have heard it works best with men..
Hey I just picked up the active version & noticed some noise (hiss) on mine. Is this typical of the Golden Age Ribbons? I've tried cheaper ribbons on my set up and they ran much cleaner.
1 year later lol no there shouldn't be hiss. Maybe some low end hum but very low, low enough to be rolled off HPF.
meaning if I accidentally press the 48V phantom in my audio interface.. this mic will malfunction immediately?

But the sudden 0-48V transient will do very nasty things.
sorry to be a party pooper but the beyer m160 isn't figure 8 pattern therefore not all ribbons are fig8 pattern
