  • In this video, Sherri demonstrates how to use two of her favorite quilting rulers, the Simple Folded Corner ruler and the Mini Simple Folded Corner ruler. She shows how these rulers can make two different types of quilt blocks quickly and efficiently and how they can help trim half-square triangle units to precise sizes. She also shares a product to help these rulers from slipping while using them.

I was using my mini folded corner ruler just yesterday. I find the instructions that come with the ruler rather mystifying so I only know how to use them when I make snowball blocks. I'm so happy to see your tutorial this morning and discover the different applications for this little ruler. Your tutorial is more helpful than any other I have watched. Thank you!

Thank you 4 demo. I have not used this ruler yet. But i liked that you pointed out the diagonal seam line going across for alignment.

I am so glad you did this tutorial! I have one of these (from a sew sampler box) and have not taken it out of the package because I was unsure how to use it. Your instructions are clear and very helpful! Thank you !

Thank you for introducing me to this tool with your previous video. It is a tool I reach for often for flying geese, snowballed corners, and HSTs. I also use it to set up binding strips for sewing them together. Great tool!

This is the best tutorial I've seen on these rulers! I have the mini but have never used it because I didn't see how it would help but now I do and think this will be a game changer for snowball and flying geese blocks. Thanks so much for taking some time to show how these rulers can be used.

Thank you so much for this video and for continuing to recommend such items. I have had this ruler for awhile and was not using it very much. You had recommended it for the 2023 November BOM so I got it out and figured how to use it. I was very happy with the help in accuracy of my HST's! I did also use it for my flying geese and it made it so much easier! Thanks!

I have both of these rulers and like using them, however I loved learning even more ways to use them. Rulers are expensive and they take up storage space, so knowing how to get them to be “multitaskers” is always a plus. Thanks, Sherri!

Thank you for showing us how to use Doug Leko's Simple Folded Corner and Mini Simple Folded Corner rulers. I hated them instantly. The extensive lines and symbols covering them were overwhelming and a turnoff.
Instead, I prefer, and bought, Creative Grids' Folded Corner Clipper Tool and its Folded Corner Clipper Tool XL. The design of Creative Grids' folded corner tools is much simpler and easier-to-use, plus they do not slide due to Creative Grids' standard proprietary gripper feature.

use these all the time. Another use is your binding and borders if you need to attach multiple pieces together. Lay the strips all right side up. Make one end even. lay ruler down and make sure that it is showing 1/4" up and than you start cutting. Do this to both ends of strips. Now you can just lay right sides together and sew the seam. Works great.

Thanks for the tutorial! I’m going to order these rulers. 😊. When I have a ruler that’s slippery, I use clear medical adhesive tape. It’s slightly texturized so I prevents slipping and it’s clear so it doesn’t obscure any ruler markings. Bonus is it has lots of uses and you should be able to find it in lots of stores.

You may want to try "Invisigrip." It's a clear film that adheres to your ruler with static instead of adhesive. It doesn't add any thickness like the dots so your ruler stays flush with your cutting mat, and it's completely transparent so nothing is blocked. You cut it to size. It doesn't have to cover the entire ruler to work, although I would cover the entire folded corner rulers. Rulers don't slip. It has helped my quilt students, especially my beginners, and really aids in accurate cuts. The first few cuts you may think it isn't sticking, but then it does with no problem. One of my all-time favorite tools.

I also use this ruler when I'm adding strips together for bindings or borders, as you can lay the strips right side up, cut them at and angle, then sew together. Much easier than the old way.

Where have these rulers been all my life LOL - love the many uses you line out for them. For slippage, I found a youtube video (apologies but I can't recall who's it was) to use medical paper tape works wonders, Its transparent and doesn't create bulk on the ruler, and it can be pulled off very easily (the flexible clear one) they sort of end up looking like the creative grids circles, but square 🙌

I recently discovered your blog and I'm really enjoying it. A question about this ruler: do you sew a scant quarter inch, or full quarter inch? I'm rather obsessive about having my blocks be the correct size, Thanks!

Thank you for the info. When making a quilt and you have 100 snowball corners to sew. Would you cut them all out them chain piece them or do a few at a time. Looking for the most time efficient way.

Thank you for the video. Greatly appreciated. I do have a question about this ruler before I buy it. I've been back and forth with it and a tad confused. Working on a 72x72 quilt finished that needs 64 finished squares at 9 inches. Some of which are HST. I'm cutting from yardage and for simplicity sake going to cut 10x10 squares and trim them to 9 ½ inches. For the HST, it makes more sense to me to trim them folded than pressed, and for this ruler (XL size of course) would I trim using the 9 inch mark on the ruler? That being the finished square size? I hope that made sense haha Thank you in advance and cheers from BC Canada 🇨🇦

Do you sew a scant 1/4" seam? Because Doug said on the fat quarter shop video that the seam allowance is not a full 1/4 seam but a scant. My question is when you sew the cut piece, do you sew a scant or a normal 1/4 to get an accurate finished measurement? Another question is can you accomplish the same thing with the creative grids folded corner clipper ruler?

  • @MyMike509

Doug is left-handed (you all know sewing machines were invented by a left hander, right?) and his rulers can be used easily by both those who cut left-handed and right handed! I have no idea why some machine needles have to be threaded right handed-🤪👍🏽thumbs up is also left-handed!😉and a left eye wink! I saw Doug demo these in KC and wish I had recorded the session. Happy quilting-I live this new hobby!

I love this ruler however it is not allowing me the quarter inch perimeter around the completed square, so that when I join it to another square, it doesn’t cut off the points. I hope that makes sense. I’ve watched the video a number of times and followed it carefully, so please help me with this.

Looks to me like still wasting same amount of fabric. I like the Deb Tucker corner pop ruler. Trim 5he corner on base but gives you triangle size to add back slightly oversized and trim. The other half of triangle pops the corner on another block. Just my opinion.
