Absolutely mesmerized by Ryan Holiday’s masterclass in this conversation with Ali. His openness and articulate way of sharing wisdom are truly commendable. It’s refreshing to see such humility and focus in a dialogue that’s genuinely illuminating. I know ‘inspirational’ is a term thrown around a lot these days, but Ryan genuinely embodies it. This isn’t just a conversation; it’s a treasure trove of insights. 👏
I used to be a colossal procrastinator, pushing significant tasks and making space for unnecessary gratifications or distractions (majorly hindering my long term goals). I did use to manage it all but only in the nick of the time. Come to think of it, it really felt disrespectful to my old self who had struggled so much to be here (like you say happy with what I had back then and never imagined how better it would get in the future). More importantly, it felt so unfair to my future self who is waiting for me to pass tha baton. This requires consistent efforts to make small, daily improvements and craft my way to the future self - keeping my soul intact. I'll always be grateful to my past self for pushing me through, my future self for recognising my potential and setting expectations, and being fully present to understand the volatility of things and events. Also, I'd to like to thank you Ryan for sharing the ancient wisdom of stoicism in a super creative way - it really helps. More power to you!
17:01 the comment about the intersection in the dichotomy of control is interesting. It’s picked up in an excellent book A Guide to the Good life, William Irvine he introduces trichotomy of control. In this there is a third category of things you have some control over. For these you must internalise the goals you have in respect of them
"Productivity is not a goal..." "...[it's] an effectiveness measurement on route to a particular goal, if you don't have that goal then optimizing for productivity is completely pointless." Truth! 1:56:07
Both of these guys have had an positive impact on my life this year. Although my year has been tough, I have found comfort in their writings and videos. Thank you Ryan and Ali. Keep of the excellent work.
1:43:06 completely agree with Abdaal here. The whole purpose of passive income or “let your money work for you” isn’t really to lay back but to have something to lay on to
I thonk today is all about productivity. Even youtube have a lot of productivity content and i dont understand why. When i was young i searched for it and even self help. But now i understand all i need to do what i meed to do is boredom. Everything is better than doing nothing
This episode is sooo valuable to me. blending Stoicism with practical productivity. Ali Abdaal and Ryan Holiday truly embody wisdom in action, emphasizing essentialism in our daily lives. A must-watch for anyone seeking to harmonize philosophy with effective living. 🌟📚
I am so grateful this podcast exists It is so insightful and it provides new perspectives to look at things that I never considered before. Thank you Ryan, I really appreciate you and your ideas
Regarding the 12 tools you can't live without video, I don't think that's candy. I think that's like a gateway drug. People are yearning for productivity because they feel and know they aren't accomplishing what they want in life. And the video makes a simple claim that "if you use these tools, you will be more productive" which is technically true, even if only 1%. But that gateway gets people in the door, who then, over years, ask the more important questions like: Which goals should I have? Are my goals worth pursuing/good for me/the world? How do I know that my goals are my goals vs somebody else's? How do I persist when I don't feel like it or lack the dopaminergic drive to do something (excitement gone)? How do I clear my mind and reduce distractions quickly so I can keep working towards my goals? What do I do if I feel my goals have changed? How do I know if they've changed or I'm just quitting because it's hard?
I can’t believe his wall is just stacked books hoping it’s a wallpaper but it doesn’t look like it. I would rip my hair out just having books organized that way and inaccessible
Take care my dear. He will make xcelent cream cheese inside four enjoi. I proud he try his best his branes. But Ali is no kindness four India. Shame. Shame four this man.
Have you ever encountered individuals openly discussing the regrettable aspects of their decision to become parents? I never have. It seems that people may hesitate to share such stories, possibly out of compassion for their children, wanting to shield them from potential hardship. Nevertheless, in more intimate social circles, I've frequently heard expressions of regret about having children. It's crucial to acknowledge these perspectives before wholeheartedly embracing the pursuit of happiness through family life, as is often understandably promoted.
@aliabdaal you can follow your inspiration for videos, because you have so many videos out there. Maybe create a playlist of “EVERGREEN” or “STILL TOTALLY RELEVANT.” So we know which oldies to watch. Live your life! Be happy! As a mom: There are many different ways to DO GOOD in this world. So long as you’re doing good, you’re good, blessing will flow.
I wish they could generate the data on people that invest their time in self help and motivational content, what percentage of them actually apply the knowledge in their lives and if it actually translates to success.
I imagine the data would show that the self-help methods are not effective. Getting Things Done by David Allen and Tiny Habits by BJ Fogg are the only effective ones I have come across. The popular book Atomic Habits perpetuates many falsehoods. Also, people have not come to terms with a simple truth. No human puts in effort for work. People do only what they feel like doing. They do not behave in a way contrary to how they feel in the moment.
Do you know how a mantra work like om nama shiva Well it work like first om is use for resting the brain and the nama is to pray to the 2 Indian famous god (mix name), and the shivayai is a short knowledge. I can't text the mantra in Sanskrit language, but the shiva is actually shivayai which means shiva is everything, and exist in all of us
The second to last segment talking about becoming doctors or w.e. You had a really scewd view of the population. Saying you had no adherent advantage to becoming a doctor or get into med school and then laughing about Both parents and their friends were doctors and that was just what you did "become a doctor" in your social circle. That sounds really disconnected, i dont know anything about you, but looking from a enironment perspective, with a two parents household and Both being doctors... You should be able to become almost anything, and I would just assume, money never was an issue and all the advantage coming with money never being an issue, all those were your advantages going into any school or college or life in general. Again you laughing about your only advantage was your parents being doctors as an ironic thing i dont know, but if you werent. Your perspective is scewd and you must understand you have had a huuuuuge advantage in school and just overall life. Loved most of the talk, but the end there you have to realize your priviliges
