Customising A 1967 Holden HR Ute

  • In this video I will take you through all the fabrication work that has been done to this 1967 Holden HR ute. What started out as just an LS swap with a 6 speed manual and a 9 inch diff turned into a full restoration. By the end every panel had been worked on in some way or another with the roof being the only one not. This will be a great street cruiser when done so make sure to follow the journey and all the other projects here at Pro Shop.

    My Dad had this same exact Ute. Two tones, white on top and powder blue on bottom. As kids it was just another car that Dad had at that time, but as I have aged, it was a classic. I love seeing what you are doing with this 1967 Ute. DM.

    A number of years ago I was a sheet metal apprentice and as a class we took a tour of the Holden Factory in Woodville. I couldn't get over how at each process of building the car as to how rusty it became before painting. They just painted over the rust. Explains why my Dad's FB holden was so full of rust.

    • @ProShop1
      @ProShop1  Рік тому

      Yeah I have heard of stories where they would store the cars out in the weather in bare metal. Not sure how true it is but after working on these old Holdens I can believe it.

    I learned to drive manual gears on an HR ute, will always have a soft spot for them. This one is going to be amazing. I owned an EH wagon for a couple of years in the late 70s, baby blue with white roof. It had a 161 from an HR in it and three on the tree. Only issues when I bought it for $450 were brakes and rusty floor. Brakes were easy to fix and a friend of mine's father who had a panel beater shop replaced the floors and coated them for $180. About three years later I sold it to a friend for $550 and it was stolen and not seen again. Wish I still had that car.

    I love watching detailed builds like this. This Ute is going to be epic. I couldn't help but notice you were switching in between tig and mig? I am new to welding, so I was just wondering why? Also, why the silicon bronze over steel filler rod with the tig? Thanks for sharing your builds with us.

    • @ProShop1
      @ProShop1  Рік тому +1

      Sometimes I'll use mig to tack a panel together before tig welding it. It's a lot easier if I need to hold the panel in place and tack it with the mig. Some other joins I'll run a few stitch welds with the mig instead of tigging the whole panel. It really just depends on the panel. Also I prefer to use silicon bronze as it is a lot softer so less heat and less distortion. Hope that helps and thanks for watching.

      Thanks Robert. If you don’t care about it being totally original then cut it all out and start fresh. It’ll save a lot of time and money. After doing the HR and the EH I’ve learnt boxed chassis rails and a flat floor is the way to go.
      The rails are 3mm thick 65x65 RHS.

      @@ProShop1 Thanks so much for your reply. Yes, cutting it all out is exactly what I would love to do, just wasn't sure how before watching your video. Gotta love a clean slate!!! Thanks again, Robert.

    Shame GMH didnt use the same body lines as of the station wagon so it had HR tail lights instead of HD, however a HD valance at the front allows you to use HD parking and blinker lights, so you get rid of the lights in the grill. just my 2 bobs worth, HR was my favourite car, I owned a HR Premier back in the day, all the HK Monaro running gear from the factory. I think they made either 100 or 200.

      That would have been a nice rare one to keep. Thanks for watching James

    Hi mate really nice work. Looks tough. Can I ask what filler rod you are using with the tig welding in the panels? Almost has a brazing colour too it. Cheers, Deano

      I learnt to use it when I was working building limousines before I started here. We built over 200 cars and used silicon bronze all the time and never had a problem.

    hi nice work love HR's, I'm wondering if you ever do a stock restoration or is it always custom ?

      I'll do anything really but customs are popular at the moment.
