Noise Complaint on an Old Rheem Furnace

  • In this video we go out to a family member's house to check out their 30 year old Rheem gas furnace that is making noise when the blower motor turns on. About a year and a half ago I removed the blower motor and tightened the brackets up on the motor and that fixed the vibration issue that they were having. A few of the screws had become a little loose on the sides of the motor that hold the brackets in place. This visit there was more play than before, so I recommended a new blower motor based on it's age, a new blower wheel, and new brackets. We are going to see the condition of the motor shaft when I pull the motor and leave that motor at the house as an emergency back up if needed in the future if its in good condition. If I were to leave the blower motor alone I would have needed to pull the motor and checked for shaft play. This motor shaft has been supporting the blower wheel's weight for its entire life, so it is a safe bet that there will be some shaft play that is contributing to the wobble in the wheel. I am replacing the brackets because of metal fatigue which I have seen in my experience dealing with motors that use these types of brackets versus a belly band mount. A good way to visually check the blower wheel is to remove the wheel from the housing and look at it or measure it to see if it is out of round or not. Another test you can do is put the wheel on a smooth surface and lightly roll the wheel. If the wheel doesn't roll true you know that the wheel is indeed out of round and contributing to the noise and vibration.

Thorough service works every time! Stay warm in the storm, you guys are getting more snow than we are. Just sleet right now and maybe an inch of snow after that. Disappointing! I would like a few inches so the dogs can play!

Appreciate you showing some extra support and leaving a comment. Will try to stay warm up here. Once the snow gets on the roads, I don't run calls. These roads are too narrow, steep, and curvy to be running on in snow and ice in my service van. No 4wd and no positraction. It is an 8,000 lbs lead sled. Any service call I run won't pay for a new van, increased vehicle insurance, and increased liability insurance if I wreck it. Thanks & stay safe.

You too. Once the snow starts, I am not going out in it. People will have to call someone else. These roads are way too unforgiveable to drive on in the snow without 4wd and maybe even some chains for added grip. Steep, slanted, and curvy roads are death traps.

I always tell customers it cost more if they want to watch

Lol. Seems like almost every customer I get now is on top of me. I don't mind if people watch, but I don't like people behind me. Need them off to the side or in front of me so that I can see them. I think it has gotten worse because of the economy around here. The majority of people are getting spanked right now.

And with that attitude I would tell you to take a hike,
because that tells me you have, something to hide and want to rip me off remember, the, custumer pays your bill, I am tired of tradesman who have no people skills. Whether you are a car mechanic hvac person electrician or plumber.
You need good customer service skills. Trust me custumers will back down once you show them that they can trust you hint Charles at my hvac life demonstrates this.
Especially when you have scanners out thier telling you you have to get a new system over things like blower motors or videos like Ted cooks where guys lie and say your heat exchanger is cracked when it isn't.
Get some sensitivity. And grow the hell up and learn how to de with people or find another trade.

They aren't that bad. This is back when Rheem made a good product that was built to last before they sold their souls to Mexico in the early 2000s. They do have some poor placements on parts like most Rheem units do though. Engineers don't consider the service man much when designing them. Stay safe out there bud.

@@JakePorterHVAC everything's made crappier these days it seems doesn't matter what brand - still i thought rheem is still one of the better ones with york and goodman being the worst.
