  • In this video we unbox and take a look at the Mac Allister 600w hammer drill
    Purchased from b&q for £30
    Very good drill for the price, I know 2 people who have given this drill a constant pounding and both drills are still running like they should, so I decided to get this drill since my black and decker cordless has given up the ghost
    I have a few Mac Allister tools, chop saw, angle grinder and now a drill but have never had a problem with these tools breaking or not working properly so confident in quality.
    This drill has more than enough power for most projects in the man cave as I don’t have to drill through thick blocks of steel although I think this drill would manage anyway.
    Thanks for watching, and if interested you should check out my other reasonably priced tool videos.

    I’ve had the old cordless model for years (use it now and then). I paid €99 for it on special in B&Q (with 2 batteries). It just keeps on going. For the price it has been super-super reliable. I look after my stuff, but still. Either it is well built or I have been very lucky. After a couple of years the black rubberised grip/pad thing slowly came away, but I was able to glue it back on pretty well. Incidentally, the standard type Gorilla Glue didn’t work for me, but Gorilla Glue branded super glue did. (tbh I no longer rate standard Gorilla Glue. Tried their brand of super glue purely because it was much better value, by the ml, over Loctite, which is a total ripoff. Btw, super glue outside, the fumes are phenomenal!!! The one good thing, I suppose, about the standard GG is it doesn’t really smell. It doesn’t really glue a lot of items permanently, but that’s another story. /glue-rant 😊
    Update: after watching the video, the feeling I get from this drill is, while it would easily be more powerful than my cordless MacAllister hammer drill, I’d bet you trade off some reliability for that power. Call it a hunch. I could be wrong. The main issue with mine is it’s not quite powerful enough for every job. It’ll typically get it done, but drilling into a lintel can prove hard sometimes. I can tell with this wired model it would be a great household drill, in that sense. I certainly wouldn’t use this corded model on screws, though... a bit too powerful for that.

    • @oraclescave
      @oraclescave  5 років тому

      Yes that is correct, too powerful to use as a screwdriver, nowadays cordless drills are just screwdrivers, I purchased a set of makita drill and impact driver set.
      One of the best purchases I've made, I expected the impact driver to be the most powerful out of the two, but the drill is mega strong.
      I use my cheaper wired drill for anytime i need to go hard, and it holds up fine.
      Amazing price for a tool that gets used in more ways than any other tool, wire brushing, drilling, polishing, sanding and even use my drill to start 2 stroke engines.
      Never have an issue with it.
      My makita set was only £150 and this drill is basically back up insurance to prolong the life of my higher end drills.
      👍👍👍👍

      @@oraclescave I just bought one on eBay. Funnily enough, both my batteries on my cordless started acting up yesterday. It's time I went wired. Going to switch myself to a wired for drilling and a small pocket driver for screwing. It's.a better choice in the long run. You need two devices, but when screwing you get something really manageable and light, and when drilling you don't spend two-three hours faffing about hanging an exterior light on the wall in the back garden, as I did yesterday. Sure, for certain trades it probably makes sense to go wireless, but then you get the best brand and have several spare batteries. For me wired and perhaps an extension lead and get the thing done and not have to worry about charging is the better way to go. Lesson learned. Only took me 8 years of owning this one to know it ;-)

    my mac allister like this is working fine drilling into masonery pretty dam good. Now after a year the chuck has seized and I'm trying to learn how to get it off and see if I can WD40 it lose to repair it and revive it.?. I think you need a special storx screwdriver to get that holding screw out. otherwise its been a fine drill . I got about 160 drill holes in masonery before the chuck seized on me. good video thankyou

      Brian Trend I have been using mine all day today on wood, and I also noticed it was very hard to tighten and loosen the chuck.
      I might just try pulling it apart tomorrow and greasing everything up for future sticking issues.
      Thanks for commenting about this, I would have just left it.
      But yeah it's a great drill, I use mine for hours at a time a few days a week and it has been fine, excellent value for money.

      ORACLE'S CAVE try the WD40 or thin oil to open it up loosely. Because dust causes problems to chucks. I know I crashed my chuck pincers into the wall once drilling multiple holes right through concrete blocks so I thought that hammering and pushing on the chuck head was the problem ? Ive never taken one apart before. so I'm buying a 2nd drill as back up (may as well be now) and a new keyless chuck too. I remember having problems tightening key chucks as well.. maintenance makes sense now ha. I have the smallest workshop in England its so small 2 metres x 1.5 metres storeroom conversion so I just keep tools in there and do my retirement projects and surfboard shaping and building outside on my trusty plastic workhorses and sheet board table. the rain is a pain .

    Nice drill buddy I was thinking you may just have over discharged the 18650 cells in the battery pack if you have a trickle charger try putting it on to see if you can bring up the power to above the cut off voltage but you may have to connect it straight to the cells instead of through the circuitry failing that you could have burned out the brushes in the motor let me know how you got on

      Hold the bottom of the black piece at the front and twist the rest of it to the right with the drill facing away from you.
      It could just be cranked all the way down, if something is wrong just return it for another one, the warranty is immediate replacement.
      Mine can get a little crunchy but has always worked, I imagine yours is just tightened all the way

    It's got different speed variations on it as well but how do I use to it install a curtain bracket please ?

    • @oraclescave
      @oraclescave  3 роки тому

      This tool would be for making the holes in the wall.
      You are supposed to use a screwdriver to install the screws, or you could use a DRILL DRIVER
      This tool is not for putting screws in, the speed control us for using the drill on different materials like wood, concrete and metal.
      Drill drivers are small cute looking mini drills, slower speed settings and only really accept different tips on the end, like flat tip, Phillips head, pozi, torx.
      But to do the job, you would get a drill bit smaller than the hole you need to make and drill your hole.
      Then insert a RAWL PLUG in each hole
      Then screw your screws into the rawl plugs through your bracket.
      But use a normal screwdriver for the screws as this drill will shred and strip your screw out instantly if you are not careful.
      And job is complete.
      👍👍👍

    I have a few macallister tools too, and always liked them. I got this same drill and a grinder on offer for £30. Mine is unfortunately defective, the chuck keeps loosening itself under power. It's out of warranty unfortunately so I need to replace the chuck, but of course they make it awkward with strange size and shape of bolt holding it to the shaft. Pity as all my other macallisters are very efficient and never any bother with them. Edited after a few hours. I think the problem lies with the plastic grip at the bottom of the chuck. I don't know the anatomy of a chuck, or the proper names for the pieces that wake it up. The 3 pins that grip a drill bit have grooves lower down. These are gripped by a rounf piece at the bottom of the chuck just like bolt threads. Turn it one way and they tighten, the other and they loosen. Because the round piece that does this job is made of plastic, it can strip. I thonk that is what happened to mine. If It had benn metal it would have taken longer to strip. I have another chuckless bit from a Dewalt drill that the battery died on. It's not worth trying to find a replacement battery as the drill is so old, but the chuck works fine and could be upcycled on to another drill with no loss of function. I'm just having a nightmare doing it with this macallister drill because the oin bolt in the centre of the chuck has been made a weird size, probably to push people towards a new drill rather than repairing the existing one that would work very well barring the loose chuck! I'm not hating on macallister tools, because all my other s work very well, and vary in age from recent to about a decade old. I just wish the chuck upgrade was simple! Is that to much to ask?

    • @oraclescave
      @oraclescave  4 роки тому

      There should be a screw/bolt down the centre of the chuck, just put some thread lock or glue on the bolt then re-install, that might work unless something else is causing it.

    • @Moondog-wc4vm
      @Moondog-wc4vm 4 роки тому

      @@oraclescave I can't loosen the screw, as none of my Torx head drivers will fit. I have a large number of them, from 3 different driver sets. That makes me think that macallister deliberatley used a less used size in order to push people towards buying new tools rather than repairing. I'm trying to replace it with the chuck from a defunct DeWalt drill, and I had no problem removing it!. The macallister chuck is of no more use to me, so I might consider drilling the head of the bolt in it's chuck and then fiting the DeWalt chuck on in it's place.
