The thing about this artists is that his guitar virtuosity, as astonishing as it truly is, never fails to serve the song. Guitarists who can play the instrument at this level don't always begin by leading us into a story. And sheer speed can get fatiguing very quickly. I've seen the great ones who've used speed with measured economy, Michael Bloomfield, Johnny Winter, Gary Moore (Moore especially was brilliant at this). The audience is invited along for the ride, and when the fireworks start - that fierce speed and virtuosic melodicism - we're inhabiting the story enough to feel the thrill. I'm loving "Ride"! And I get where this video clip is coming from. But despite it all, Mr. Trout's emotional honesty is why we love seeing him live.
