I'm a through on through Yankee fan but I was at the game. My aunts ex had gotten tickets and we were in the nosebleeds. Even as a soon to be 12 year old, didn't really know but I knew it was different.
Being in school hearing fighter jets in the Bronx, seeing right before our eyes the towers come down. Seeing my aunt and uncle who drove home complete strangers covered in dust to going to a baseball game seemed surreal. The stadium was eerily quiet. Bruce Chen I remember was like the folk hero. Keeping a pretty impressive braves team at bay. But so was Marquis.
John Franco gave up a run and you can almost sense the crowd wasn't in it. Then suddenly that Piazza shot and I don't care if you were a Braves, Mets, Yankees or toledo mud hens fan. Everyone went nuts. I thought the stadium was going to collapse from the shaking. Its almost like he said FU to the world this is America and we are still standing.
I truly believe that home run is maybe not standing wise, but probably most important home run hit for the symbolism.
Just wow and a no doubter. The Mets went on to make a run with a fury also nearly making it in till Brian Jordan on a Sunday, ruined it.
I always felt with the inspiration Mets had and fact they always have handled Arizona they could have gone to the series. Shame it didn't happen.
But what an amazing moment. I only grow to appreciate more and more as time passes.

In 1997 I was visiting my Uncle in LA. I'm from NJ, and a huge Mets fan!
My cousin takes me to a Dodger game. We had great seats down the 3rd base line near the field.
Piazza is up at bat and rips a few foul balls into the stands. I tell my cousin, "pay attention to this guy". I figured he could smash one our way...WELL...next pitch, CRACK...the ball rockets just over our heads and the ball hits some old timer in the arm. I swear it was broken by the sound right behind us. I was in the end seat, and the ball rolled right to me. I picked it up and gave it to a women sitting with the guy that got hit.
When I heard that the Mets got Mike Piazza in '98, I was so excited. His power was unbelievable.
Little did I know how great it was that he came to NY !
I miss watching him play ball !

When I was a kid (Cardinals fan) and Piazza was still on the Dodgers, I saw him hit a homerun against the Cardinals at old Busch Stadium that bounced off a bunch of junk well beyond dead center field. As he rounded second, he blew a giant bubblegum bubble. The image is seared in my memory.

Was always indifferent to Piazza, he never played in my market so I didnt pay attention. I remember always being of the assumption that Piazza was a great hitter and subpar Cather. The 1999 NLCS vs the Braves changed my opinion of this guy. I watched that series and the Mets lost, but Piazza was a gladiator on that field. He was so beat to hell from the season behind the plate that you could see on TV every step hurt this man. He could barley get in his squat behind the plate. Yet, he battled and bulldogged through it all, Both at the plate and behind he plate, he was a star in that series. Needless to say I started paying attention to Mike Piazza after that.

Mike Piazza is and always will be a LA DODGER....best years of his career

I'm a Dodger fan too, and I understand the desire to remember him as one😥, but the stupid Dodger brass traded him🤯 away. His best years were with the Mets, because they appreciated him.👌

Accept it dude. Mike Piazza will always be remembered as a Met. His best and iconic years and moments were as a Met. Piazza himself only recognizes himself as Met and not a dodger, and asked to be inducted as a Met. Watch his hall of fame induction speech. He only mentions his memories as a Met and Mets fans and how he misses them.

@@edwintorres8814 true he wants to be recognized as a met but facts are facts Piazza had his best stats and years as a LA DODGER

I saw Piazza playing for Bakersfield Dodgers. I remember telling whoever I was with "This guy is good. I think he's gonna make it."
