In the mid-1960s, Jack Wagner-- National Radio/TV Services Manager at Capitol Records-- began the Silver Platter Service, sending custom LPs containing interviews of Capitol recording artists to radio stations in the hope that they would broadcast these mini-radio shows, thereby helping to promote the label's product. This interview with Brian was taken from the 1967 "Silver Platter Service from Hollywood" compilation.
Amazing how he sounded together here, but this is when the rest of the BB didn't agree with this album, I think it hurt him dearly
Sounds like Carl
"we had about 6 months of material that we junked, so we ended up doing the whole thing here at the house and did it in three weeks". So basically, he was writing the great American essay, and when he found he couldn't finish it in time, he threw it away, and turned in an abbreviated sloppy "cliff notes" version to his teacher. Yeah--I did that before when I was in school
Love the ending! “So we left it in!” Adorable
this is wicked
Not very informative. Why didn’t this guy ask why Brian “changed his approach”?
Awesome thanks for posting
And 45 years and nine days later, the Beach Boys would play their longest ever concert. 😮
I love smiley smile as much as Smile Sessions, if not more
I purchased the album in 1967, genius....Carl Wilson said this concerning SS...It was a bunt instead of a home run
“We did it in three weeks.
"I'm glad you liked the album"
Brilliant.
Amazing footage!
Thank you, rare obscure Brian Wilson and band interviews are my catnip. And I love Smiley Smile (and of course what would ultimately become 'Brian Wilson’s SMiLE') I wish Brian didn’t get discouraged by the formula comment and was able to be better supported and understood by his record company and not being so sensitive to the negativity nor confusion of that supposedly teetotaling Redbearded cousin of his. I got respect for Al Jardine the most out of all the non Wilson brothers. Damn, wish Dennis and Carl were still around.
❤
They should have understood right then....forget the home studio
im sorry but Smiley Smile sucked (exept for the material taken straight from smile) and the next two albums sucked too.
