I understand that the couple should take seven steps around the holy fire. Sapta (seven) pathi = foot at the bottom of leg ( ...paatham.. in Sanskrit and Tamil. Most Sanskrit words have gone into other languages also. TRIPOD = three footed. Tri = Tri Netra Lord Shiva Three eyed. POD=foot PAADAM). In Hindu marriage ritual, it is traditionally solemnised after the couple come around holy fire and also by taking SEVEN-STEPS(saptapathi) with Vedic Chanting of Mantras by the Priest. It is mentioned in old Tamil Literature SILAPPATHIKAAARAM also. மாமுது பார்பான் மறை வழி காட்ட தீ வலம் வந்து meaning Holy Brahmin Priest showed the Vedic ways and Kovalan and Kannagi came around the Holy Fire and married.

this would be Madras Iyer marrige I believe. each bramhin subcasts having their own sampradaya. not all the bramhins follow the same rituals.
