This weekend marks the 20th Anniversary of Shrek 2 releasing in theaters. Arguably the most ICONIC movie sequel of all time.

Shrek 2 is a 2004 American animated fantasy comedy film loosely based on the 1990 children's picture book Shrek! by William Steig. Directed by Andrew Adamson, Kelly Asbury, and Conrad Vernon (in Vernon's feature directorial debut) from a screenplay by Adamson, Joe Stillman, and the writing team of J. David Stem and David N. Weiss, it is the sequel to Shrek (2001) and the second installment in the Shrek film series. The film stars Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz, who reprise their respective voice roles of Shrek, Donkey, and Princess Fiona. They are joined by new characters voiced by Antonio Banderas, Julie Andrews, John Cleese, Rupert Everett, and Jennifer Saunders. Shrek 2 takes place following the events of the first film, with Shrek and Donkey meeting Fiona's parents as the zealous Fairy Godmother, who wants Fiona to marry her son Prince Charming, plots to destroy Shrek and Fiona's marriage. Shrek and Donkey team up with a sword-wielding cat named Puss in Boots to foil her plans.

I think the key to determining a musical is how much of the music is diegetic (being sung by the characters in real time).
I don’t know if I consider this a musical, because in musicals the characters sing to advance the plot, and the only one who sings is the Fairy Godmother and I’d argue that she’s not doing it to advance the plot, she’s just in situations where she would sing (her intro song feels like a thing she would just do and I need a hero was a performance)
That’s a very valid point
I have a theory that the reason the Fairy Godmother turned into bubbles is that it was the last bad ending that she reversed... Taking it on herself. Which is why the enchantress never shows up again after the end of Beauty & the Beast.

LOLZ Prince Charming is hilarious
There's so many jokes in this film that you don't get until you're much older - the union jokes, the KNIGHTS scene, the blink-and-you'll-miss-it Starbucks gag. I feel that's probably the main reason why this film has stood the test of time and arguably keeps getting better the more times you watch it. And yes, this film should definitely be discussed in the same breath as The Empire Strikes Back or The Dark Knight as a sequel that's even better than the original

I really honestly love this movie. It has such an interesting plot of "but what if they didn't live happily ever after" with actual, reasonable, natural progression! I also love the Fairy Godmother scene. We all know which one. I'm super lucky, because I have A.D.D. that makes me forget stuff very easily, so I got to experience that scene for the first time like 3 times and it has impacted me every single time
As a 20 year old sharing a birth year with Shrek 2 and Mean Girls is my biggest flex 😂

Ok there is one massive plot hole in this movie. IF Charming kissed Fiona and she fell in love with him she’s still turn into an ogre at midnight unless shrek kissed her. Sure charming would be married to fiona but in her ogre form
