Reimagined SG Build | Ep.2 making a Neck

- This year I'm making a reimagined Gibson SG. This video covers making the neck. This is a maple, rosewood and mahogany neck with a zebra wood fretboard. I'm making a 25.5 inch scale length with and 12 inch radius fretboard and will be carving a C shaped profile (after making a body).
This year I am entering the community build category so that I can just build for the fun of it rather than worry about voting and raffles.
Thanks for all your kind comments and good luck all, I'm really looking forward to seeing what everyone does this year!

That zebra was a great choice. And excellent complimentary choices for the neck. Nice!
Thanks Scott! I’m less confident on the body wood at this point but I’ve got a few days to procrastinate yet!🤣
Wow, it's amazing the "routing by hand thing"! Great video, great build!
Thanks for the kind comment Marc!👍
Awesome build. I love that zebra wood fretboard. Looking great.
Thanks, I really appreciate it! 👍
Beautiful wood. Your shop cat is gorgeous.
Thanks for the kind comment Lisa!👍
i love zebrano, great tim ber to work with. enjoyable and easy to watch video style
Thanks Jurgen, I really appreciate it! 👍 I’m definitely going to use it again, it’s one of those woods that will go well with lots of others.
always a pleasure watching your attention to detail!
Thanks, I appreciate it! 👍
Finally catching up on your build dude, and that neck is beautiful. Love the choice of woods!!!
Thanks man, I really appreciate it. I’ll make sure to watch the rest of yours this evening!👍
great work, that is a really nice neck! I love the wood color that you chosed! I can't wait to see the rest of the build!
Thanks Lars!👍 I’m looking forward to seeing what you have planned. Also I added your channel as a featured channel! 😀
@@TornelliGuitars next week I will dorp the trailer and star sharing the design! And thank you! That really helps a lot!
Very nice man. I love the wood choices and your work is just impeccable! I have learned so much from you brother. I'm so glad we're comrades! Awesome. ✌️
Thanks Todd, I appreciate your kind words! 👍
Hell yeah dude! Those woods look awesome together!
Haha thanks bud! 👍I’m really pleased with how the zebra wood came out, it’s the first time I’ve used it. I’m really looking forward to you dropping your first vid! 😀
Looking good 👍 great tip about slotting before adding a taper. I've used a pre slotted fretboard for my build. Maybe I can take a few tips from this video for my next neck build which won't be too long. I'm building an SG shaped guitar for a friend and they've decided not to have a pre built neck put in.
Cool, thanks! 👍 it’s great to have someone ask you to build a neck so enjoy!😀
I think this is going to be a fantastic series to watch. Your wood choices as ever are really quite lovely. Very interested in the 3x3 flat headstock as it’s something I’m toying with.
Thanks as always for your kind comment Jamie, I’m hoping the 3x3 flat arrangement will look good. I’m fairly convinced it will at this point!👍.
Beautiful neck. I can’t wait to see what you do next!
Thanks for the kind comment, I appreciate it 👍 looking forward to your build this year too!
@@TornelliGuitars You’re very welcome!
Great looking neck! Looking forward to the next episode
Thanks! 👍 I watched your build last year so looking forward to seeing yours this year too! 😀
I agree .. you can do good cuts with a jigsaw
I don't have a bandsaw just now and as you have seen that's what i have used when i needed something like that.
Also when you are using the jigsaw if you tape it up it cuts down the chance of tear out and bits chipping of (depending on the type of wood you have as well)
Looking good bud, you'll not need 6 months to get this done
i haven't even done a GGBO intro yet never mind starting a neck or anything yet ... lol
Thanks Rab 👍 I’ll try the tape trick when I get to my tops because they’re all quite thin and brittle (rosewood). And yes I’m hoping to finish in about 6 weeks, I’m still undecided for what to do regarding body wood and finish but I’ve got a few days to mull it over now.
@@TornelliGuitars Well you have plenty of time before it needs to be finished
Go have a couple weeks holiday and you sill might be ahead of me ... lol
Man, I feel like a slacker. I'm still in the design phase. Like you, I'm doing an SG/Viper kind of design. I just can't seem to get the shape right.
Really looking forward to this series. Always enjoy your content. It makes me feel mellow. Good luck!
Thanks I always appreciate your kind comments!👍 I’ll look out for your build too!
Really lovely work done with precision and attention to detail. That's one beautiful neck. Looking forward to your next video!
Thanks for the kind comment, I really appreciate it!👍
Beautiful work man!
Thanks for the kind comment, I really appreciate it 👍
It's very calming to watch you work.
Thanks, I appreciate it!👍
@@TornelliGuitars I'm looking forward to seeing more.
Really good video - and very useful to a first time scratch builder too. Much good for thought 🤔 thank you!
Thanks for the kind comment, I really appreciate it!👍
Love the wood choices specially the fretboard. The frets break up the grain of the wood nicely. It almost looks like layers of earth telling the story of time when laid on its side.
Thanks, that’s a really great way of looking at it! 👍
Great work. Clean and pro as usual 👍👏
Thanks! 🙏 I’m looking forward to some intricate carving from you this year! 😀
@@TornelliGuitars☺️ that's not the plan for this year. I'll will take it easy this time 😉
Looking forward for your next videos Giá!
Gorgeous wood for the fretboard. Great work so far, and can't wait to see it finished!
Thanks I really appreciate it!👍
Lookin great!
Thanks for the kind comment Sean! I really enjoy your content btw 👍
Looking forward to seeing how this progresses! Excellent wood selection. 👍
Thanks Arran!👍 I’m really happy with how the wood looks, I was worried about how the fretboard may turn out there for a while.
Caught some great tips on this. Thanks. My build is of a model I prototyped last year.
This will be my first GGBO entry. Subbed.
The video quality is great btw. That is something I need to work on, but it's more expensive than building guitars 😅
Thanks for the kind comment, I really appreciate it!👍 I’ll check out your channel and follow your GGBO.
@@TornelliGuitars I'm a big advocate of the handheld jigsaw btw. Posting a couple of very short videos in a few minutes with a jig saw trick.
@@peachmelba1000 me too! I’ve just subbed and added my 2 cents on your questions in your latest vid!👍
Nice work man
Thanks! I appreciate it 👍
I think it's safe to say your editing skills are better than mine lol
That's looking sweet bud
Haha not sure about the editing but thanks for the kind comment, I appreciate it 👍
Absolutely beautiful! Did you rough out the radius first with some planes? I use the sanding block method too. I works, just takes me forever.
Thanks for the kind comment, I really appreciate it! And no, I don’t plane anything off, I just radius it with the block. I tend to enjoy doing things the long way!
I like the head stock design much better than the Strat or tele style on the template you used. The neck is looking great by the way.
Thanks for the kind comment I really appreciate it!👍
It's looking beautiful, like all your other builds. BTW, when you prepare a neck blank, how thick do you go? 20mm?
Thanks for the kind comment Bart! 🙏 and yes, I go for 20mm neck and 6mm fretboard normally.
@@TornelliGuitars Thanks. I used 40mm for my last two builds (which were neck through) and felt it was a real waste of wood when I hogged out the unnecessary extra thickness at the neck. For my current build, I was planning to go with a 20mm blank, but wondered if it would be enough for the headstock. So, it's good to hear that's the norm for you. :)
@@bhartissimo Hi Bart, yes 20mm will be fine. I plane the headstock down to 15mm thick also. And I agree with you, it is a waste to lose so much wood from a 40mm blank. When I do a neck though I am going to laminate two 20mm pieces together just for the body area and avoid losing any wood. 👍
Good choice on the zebra wood fretboard, it looks great on that neck blank!
I just got my body jointed and glued up today. Going to do the rough cut with my jigsaw. Still undecided on template routing the final shape or use my oscillating belt/spindle sander. I like the accuracy of template routing but sanding is more “artish” 😊.
What blades do you use in your jigsaw for cutting the neck and body?
Hi, thanks again for the comment. I’ll check out your build. I use Bosch T308Bf jigsaw blades, they are great! 👍
@@TornelliGuitars thanks for the tip.
What do you think your headstock angle ends up being?
It’s a flat fender style so no headstock angle but the same drop from the nut to the headstock as a fender, so approx 14mm.
