When your best player by far is a team player first, everyone on the team is confident and ready to give everything they've got. They watched their franchise player, night after night, hitting the floor, or diving out of bounds for a loose ball, that style of play becomes infectious!

The goat eill be a team player. Hence Magic and Bird are goat candidates above Jordan.
The goat will be team player and game maker.

Larry is the better all around player, a better team player, lifts the entire team (not just himself), the founde4 & 2X member of the 50/40/90club, 3X CONSECUTIVE MVPS, Winner of the first 3 3pt contests (MJ holds the worst ever 3pt contest showing)

@@irishgrlYou're basing the difference between MJ and Larry from a 3-point competition? From A to Zed I don't think you thought this through. Larry's a better teammate and he lifts the Boston Celtics. I was born in 1978 and witnessed Larry and MJ playing against one another. Larry the Canary Bird was fierce and competitive, however, if you think he's better all-around than MJ and just because he's your favourite player. Doesn't mean he's the best in history.

I went to watch my future wife on the basketball court, and made my college roommate go too in 1976. I told him I'd heard about this "hick from French Lick", let's see if he's any good. This 6"9" guy stole the ball and dribbled down the court like a guard. Went straight for the other team's 7 footer like he was going to dunk. Instead, as he went up in the air, he no-look flicked the ball over his shoulder to Harry Morgan (the other forward) who slammed it home. Having watched Notre Dame, Indiana University Purdue and the greats of UCLA with my dad through the 60's and 70's I knew right away he was special. He's the best overall basketball player I've ever seen

Bird would pass up an easy bucket to feed the big guys hustling down the court. He rewarded hustle and his teammates understood this creating more hustle. He was so fun to watch. Great reaction.

    • @cesarmedina7080

Exactly, that is not shown in stats. Bird could have scored 30+ every game but he didn't care about being first in scoring. He cared about being the last team standing. All Birds numbers could easily be even higher than they are if he played selfishly like Jordan did the first few years of his career.

Bird was unreal.... He loved to talk crap!!!!! But he could back up that talk!!!! He talked the talk, and he walked the walk also!!!! He would tell the other team what he was going to do, then did it!!!!! AND he played against many darn good players. Not flunkies!!!!! His body gave up on him after several years!!! One of the most impressive things that Larry did in my eyes, was he hit his face on the floor going after a loose ball. He broke some bones in his face and went to the locker room. The other team started to close the scoring gap. Larry came back out AND finished the game. The man had heart & desire!!!! I hope you enjoyed this!!!!!!!

Not only was Bird the third player (and the only forward) to make MVP 3 times in a row but In a 9-year run from 1980 to 1989, Larry Bird got 67% of all MVP votes that were cast. All other players combined only received 33% of the votes. in an era that included the players who eventually made up the dream team and a large list of HOF players.

I think Larry Legend is the GOAT because no other NBA player has ever gotten more out of what talent they had than "The Hick From French Lick" did. A lot of NBA players have had more talent than Larry did, but ever nobody played the game better, from all aspects, than he did.

Imagine if Bird hadn’t hurt his finger. I think he hurt his finger playing softball. I believe it was permanently bent and he had no feeling in it. Anyone who has tried to shoot a basketball with a damaged finger understands. He possibly could have been a member of the 50/50/90% club,if not for his finger. Plus his back stopped him at least five years too soon. Also,if he had been a selfish player;those stats would have probably at least doubled (at least the points). Imagine if Len Bias hadn’t died also. How many more rings would they have gotten.

Larry Bird NBA MVP for 3 straight years 1984, 1985 and 1986. People don't realize how difficult that is. Not even Michael Jordan did that who was 0-6 in the postseason against Bird. There was nobody like Bird, ever. What he did on the court was otherworldly. The passing, the incredible shooting, the basketball I.Q. always thinking 2 moves ahead... to me Bird is the GOAT. Jordan is second. Both are automatic All-Time starting 5 players forever.

What stands out for me is his rookie season impact on the Celtics….29 game team before bird….60+ win team with bird as ONLY addition to the team and brought the to the eastern conference finals….what did Lebron do his rookie year for the Cavs? How about Kobie? MJ? Or any other great/goat talk player? No one effected/affected a team or the league like Bird…should be named the National Bird Association. He is the GOAT

It's been stated by a retired NBA statistician who watched all the game films that exist of entire games for his career that Wilt had a QUINTUPLE double in one game.
He's also stated that the blocks ALONE would have given Wilt and Bill Russell quite a few quadruple doubles - each.
This is not a knock on Larry Legend (the only OTHER player to ever win MVP 3 times in a row and the only non-center to do so), but more a comment on HOW dominant Wilt and Bill were in their own ways (they were the first 2 to win MVP 3 times in a row).

@@bricefleckenstein9666I agree, Bryant was great but not greatest of alltime conversation great. Although like Bird, he could have put up much bigger numbers especially scoring if he wanted to. He definitely held back when Shaq was around and even after he left, Kobe seemed to not go all out offensively like he could have except for that one season in 06 or 07 when he put up big time scoring numbers.

@@cesarmedina7080 Would have helped if Kobe had an above average FG% instead of one that was right about NBA average in all but one season (the one he did score the most for a season of his career) and even more if he'd had a "hit the clutch shot" percentage better than FLAT OUT BAD even in that season.

No player had a bigger impact on his team's success than Larry Bird. The record turnaround of +32 wins his rookie year was an all-time record--not for rookies either--for anyone, any team, any year. When he sat out with injury in '88, Boston lost 22 more games than the year before. With ISU, he took a team of guys no one had ever heard of that didn't go on to the nba to a 33-0 record going into the title game. ISU had never even been in the tournament before Bird got there. That team didn't have a James Worthy I assure you. He did it all--32-13-5 career average at ISU. Never a losing season or not a playoff threat. Contrast Jordan--+11 wins his rookie year--respectable. 3 straight losing seasons to start career, though his missed much of year 2, 2 losing seasons with Washington to finish--5 in total. Back-to-back sweeps by Boston--dominated by Rodman's Pistons, as well. Without him in '93, the Bulls only lost 2 more games that regular season. Can anyone name a player who had greater impact than Bird with some facts to back it up? I already know Jordan can do dunks that no one else can. The idea is to win, though, and win much more to demonstrate impact. When the guys around you score more points when you are ON the floor than when you are on the bench or out with injury (because you are getting them easy baskets that they otherwise can't get), that is impact. And that's winning basketball. Not talking about the impact of an acrobatic dunk. Bird was about great impact--immediately--rookie year. Title in year 2. For some weird reason--today's casual fan seems to think that if their team loses, it is always because their best player didn't score enough points, by default. I would have to look it up, but I doubt Bird ever came away with a loss when he scored over 30 in a game. He knew he had to get others' involved. He averaged 20 points his rookie year and won a hell of a lot of games--but only because he wasn't determined to get 30. Bird would do and play as needed to win games--not score points. People who understand the game of basketball appreciate that. I get so much satisfaction watching guys like Curry or KD going off for 62, 39, etc., in a loss! Fans scratching their heads--yeah, scoring 62, or 63, for that matter, won't guarantee wins--just ask Mike. It justs means you aren't playing winning, team basketball, usually. Guys play harder on defense when they get to play offense, too. Bird always understood this. That is why he is #2 all-time in win % in the toughest era and won 3 straight MVPs and 3 titles in this era. I don't know any other player that I can argue as the greatest shooter, passer, and rebounder of all-time. He averaged as many boards as Shaq for a career and he is a small forward. Jordan fans always say--well Mike isn't a center, or Mike isn't a point guard, that's why he doesn't have a lot of rebounds or assists for career averages. Hello? Neither was Bird, but it didn't stop him! He had all-around game. And his defense? As slow and low-jumping as you may think he is, he ranks 61st all-time in defensive rating, slightly higher than the slam-dunk king's 110th rank. If you don't think Bird is the GOAT, watch more Bird videos and learn about his dominance in the dominant era of the league.

Indiana State had been a dominant program, back when the NAIA was the prime tournament and the NCAA tournament an also-ran (late 1940s and early 1950s) - including the 2 years John Wooten was coach there (they were Indiana Teacher's College at the time).
There's also a reason Indiana State recruited Mel Daniels as an assistant coach while Larry was there - for those that don't know Mel, he was one of the 7 unanimous choices for the ABA All Time team, and the ONLY person not named Julius to win more than one "All Time Team MVP" vote - which meant Indiana State had 2 of the 3 biggest basketball names ever associated with the program there at the same time.
As far as more impact - Bill Russell probably is Bird's only rival, given HOW LONG he "choked the NBA" (thanks Kareem) and led HIS era of Celtics to dominance.
And keep in mind that Bill is hands down THE LEADER on defensive win shares - and 3 full games higher than #2 on "defensive win shares per season".
Bird also started as a POWER forward - he moved to small forward to make room for McHale. He was NOT short for a power forward.
GOAT? Probably not - but he's in the conversation and BELONGS there, unlike some others that the claim is made for but the facts don't back up the claim (Hi Lebron! Hi Kobe!).

Bird had a high shot. That way it goes above defender's hands and comes down at a larger target (because it came down closer to 90 degrees). With low-angle shots, you are shooting at a smaller oval rather than a full circle (the rim, that is). Oh, and ask Gary Peyton and Dennis Rodman about trying to cover him.
