- This 1933 Gibson Prewar High Profile Full Weight "No Hole" Style 4 Flathead Banjo has resurfaced! The first we know of this fine instrument is that it spent a couple decades tucked away in the Hills of Hollywood, it went back east for a short spell, then spent some time in the Rockies, and now has resurfaced near the Hollywood Hills once again! Charlie Cushman recently tweaked this Ol' Flathead and gave it a fresh set up. His work and experience with these historic old Gibson Flathead Banjos is beyond reproach. The results were spectacular! Charlie has long been known as one of the greatest banjo players on planet earth. Charlie recently won a Grammy award along with his Bluegrass group The Earls of Leicester. Not too many people have played or set up more Gibson Prewar Flathead Banjos than Charlie Cushman. Saying Charlie is a Gibson Banjo expert is stating the obvious!
No Hole Flatheads with "Fat Boy" rims are extremely rare with perhaps around 20 of these instruments known to be in existence. 9471-4 has the power, bite, and cutting big time sound these "Fat Boy" "No Hole" Flatheads are known for. The Walnut and Chrome plating has held up extremely well over 85 years and this marriage seems to have provided a richness and sweetness in tone not normally seen in "No Hole" Flatheads! Its no wonder that Earl Scruggs recorded "GroundSpeed" on a Style 4 flathead and tried to recover that instrument for the rest of his life after getting rid of it.
Something ive noticed about his picking and fretting hands. He never seems like he is in a rush. Always relaxed and just motoring along
This is like banjo Crack! Great tone and note separation, and Mr. Cushman is certainly the master of Scruggs 3 finger. I joy to listen to. Thanks for posting
I held this banjo Thursday evening. I got to hear a little picking on it as well.
In Charlie's hands that banjo is a deadly weapon! He sure makes it speak. great video.
Maybe the best prewar I've heard on UA-cam.
Jeff Markham Agreed. Do you know what Charlie tuned down to at 2.31 of the demo? Please excuse my ignorance. This banjo and the player certainly sound 'the business'.
maxwellfan55 Mr Cushman tuned down to D Tuning. I believe that is a version of the song Reuben
Reuben Valles Thank you kindly.
18 generations of the Cushman family , Alden was my grandpa , played fiddle .
Gifted player Charlie .
What an amazing combination of Charlie Cushman and the Hollywood Hills Banjo
This is the first time I have heard Charlie play......WOW! KEEP PICKING, CHARLIE, YOU'RE A JOY TO LISTEN TO. Thank you for the opportunity to listen.
That's a powerful banjo right there! You probably should have a license to carry that thing onto a stage. Son!
A Killer banjo for sure, just what ChrisB5String posted "Great tone & note separation" it doesn't get any better than that !
Charlie and Jim Mills are the best 'Earl Scruggs' players on the planet. What a great right hand attack, as the 'Great' Earl had. Amazing
From Bonnie Scotland: Well played Charlie..Great banjo
God that thing sounds good and a damn good banjo player !
Sorry for the Geeky questions. What are the strings and bridge used on this demo, love to know? I'm just blown away with the tone and keep on comin' back!
I would like to know those things as well please .
Charlie, I really love the sound you get in everything you play. I noticed that you slide that 3 2 thing on the 3rd string. I generally do a triplet pull off myself...Muchas for what you do...Jack Baker NYC/NJ
This banjo is currently up for sale on the Banjo Hangout...
The songs as far as I know are Dear Old Dixie, Lonesome Road Blues, Ruben, Home Sweet Home and John Henry. Anyone else have a thought or two? That IS a great banjo, man.
great banjo, man and great banjo man!
The second song is not "Lonesome Road Blues", but "White House Blues". I think there's a short version of "Big Tilda" (not "Big Tilda Swinton", as suggested elsewhere) before "Home Sweet Home". And truly, this is one great banjo, but Charlie Cushman could get good tone out of a sponge.
From Southern England.Charlie your're more like Earl Scruggs than Earl Scruggs. You are the best!
Very good Banjo
Cushman is the man
Mr. Cushman is the closest to Earl Scruggs. He has that great right hand attack. Amazing talent...
This makes me want to learn banjo
Sounds great, I wonder how much vibration is coming through the neck and resonator....
Does anyone know the song mr. Cushman is playing at 4:45?
Hey Ron, thats Home Sweet Home in drop down C tuning. ie tuning the 4th string down to "C". Charlie played that incredibly well. His timing and the little nuances he adds to his playing are special. Very much like Earl would perform.
Charlie and jim mills are the men
The closest thing you will ever hear to Earl Scruggs..relaxed, chaotic three-finger picking.
What did Charlie do to the 4th string to make it pop more?
Amazing grade A.
from bonnie Scotland..Hoots mon.. fandabidozi
What tone ring is in this? Thank you
Its a factory no hole flathead
Epitomizes the south.
Setup, what set up? Does sound good but he didn't set it up, Was expecting to see him work on the banjo.
anyone know what tune he starts picking at 4:15?
Sounds like "Big Tilda". Ralph Stanley
tbfnyc it’s actually big ball in Boston
Grandpa Jones doesn't have a thing on Charlie Cashman!!😎
Charlie is about as close to Earl on the banjo as you can get.
Anyone know the song played at 2:40?
+Henri Frelin The song is Reuben!
What 20 did not like this? Must be the Chicoms:;~)
Song at 4:42? Pleaseee
Home sweet home
This banjo has power but it has a harshness to it that I’m not 100 percent in love with. Not for 65k anyways ;)
It hurt my ears too, but it may be the mike.
pretty loud but hard to know WTF on a produced video
What a god.
Truly a legend in his own mind...
He redefines the term "overrated".
You wish you were one tenth as good!
