It's like large-scale phonological assimilation (making the sounds in something more similar to the sounds that surround it). It's much easier than suddenly switching back to my American accent. And similar to what other folks have said, my parents, who aren't fluent in English, will often ask me to repeat an English word I said, and speaking to them in an accent often helps them understand me much better.
