I have an Asus VG249 23.8 inch monitor running 144hz at 1080p no problem. The main thing here to understand is that not only does your monitor need to have at least one HDMI 1.4 connector, but also your CABLE needs to be HDMI 1.4 OR above (2.0 or 2.1) and you also need a graphics card that supports at least HDMI 1.4 or above. A lot of people think HDMI doesn't support 144hz at 1080p because they have old 1.1 or 1.3 HDMI cables, as well a as monitor that does not support HDMI 1.4 at least. Remember, the GTX 980 and 970 were the first graphics cards to support HDMI 1.4 so if you have an older graphics card with the wrong cable and the wrong monitor it just wont work! All three of them have to be HDMI 1.4 or above!

I ran into a problem. This worked perfectly fine, when I'm on the desktop my monitor says it's at 120hz and I like that, but once i play minecraft it goes back to 60hz. It's only 120 hz when I'm not playing a game basically. Btw I'm on laptop with a monitor connected.
in that case, you need to go for window mode. don't play on Fullscreen
minecraft actually uses the intel graphic, change that in the Minecraft setting to use the GTX or AMD ones and you will get 144hz
it is possible that when you are running fullscreen in minecraft that it is running the 60hz version of your resolution, to solve this move the resolution slider untill it shows your resolution and 120hz

@@arcticyt0219 yah your IGPU can run at 144hz monitor. but even you can run at 144hz and playing games below 100 FPS the 144hz is not noticeable. but if you just browsing or watching movies that's fine

I just bought a new 165hz monitor and when I'm on the advance display the maximum hz that my laptop could reach with the monitor is only 120hz, my laptop is not that old I5 8th gen and Nvidia 1050,But when I'm using my brother's newer laptop with a Amd ryzen 5 and 1650 I can easily set it up to 165hz. I am using hdmi, any tips on how I can achieve the 165hz with my own laptop?

you can't hit 165HZ with either unless you use display port as HDMI 2.0 is capped at 144HZ @ 1080P. I have 2 PC's a 1050TI in one and a 1660 super in other both HDMI 2.0 and my display is a 1080P 165HZ.

if you were on a laptop... you can run 120hz on 1080p but lower it down till you get the 144hz.. and if you are using pc yah you can run 144hz at 1080p

Guys you cant run 144 Hz with a HDMI. BUT you can do 120 Hz, its by going in the Intel graphics settings and changing your Display to your 144 Hz or 120 Hz Monitor, and you have to save it. on your laptop screen you will see 60 Hz or 60 fps, but on your monitor you will see 120.
dude u can run 144hz with hdmi 1.4 or higher only if ur monitor supports it i have g24c4 msi and i simply run 144hz with hdmi 1.4

You need same amount of fps to see the difference. You need 60fps to utilize 60hz and 144fps for 144hz
60hz will render in 60fps no 10kfps don't matter

I think you need a dvi to hdmi active adapter, not just a normal converter.

@@fanham4407 u need to check your specs on your laptop. some of them have miniDPs or thunderbolt 3. thunderbolt 3 gets you 144hz aswell ( new gen ). And from display port to hdmi u cant get more than 60hz because hdmis are capped to 60only...
can you make a video on valorant too, cause in game it shows 30 hertz when I do fullscreen but when I change it to windowed fullscreen it changes to 120 hz but then game gives low fps. Any solutions ?

you will have no issues with 120HZ as that is the max for HDMI 1.4 @1080P.

not really but. if you can take 120fps above it is much smoother than 60hz monitor
it does boost performance depending on the game. on rainbow six siege, without an external monitor i averaged 182 fps on the benchmark test, with an external monitor bypassing optimus i got 245fps average. however on apex legends i’ve only noticed a 15-30 fps increase.

Depends on HDMI version ..of ur laptop get a high quality cable tooooo with higher bandwidth support ... And when u connect ur laptop to monitor choose second screen only...this may give u like 5 to 8% boost in games like valorant or cs.... ...and disable ur igpu.. device manager.(Intel uhd whatever that is ) and there is a 90% chance if ur laptop HDMI version is 2.0 or higher...it will work

Hi....I have gaming laptop Ryzen 7 gtx 1660ti running on 120hz, hdmi 2.0 (no dp port).. Planning to buy gaming monitor (144hz)... questions, if I just connect to monitor using hdmi 2.0 cable, can I get 144hz While gaming/watch vid/UA-cam?also can use gsync using hdmi 2.0?
120hz compare to 144hz is not noticeable, and im 35% not sure you can run 144hz on 1080p, cuz most of the laptop that has built in 60hz-120hz screen, are cap on 120hz at 1080p only, even you have 144hz external monitor. But if below 1080p resolutions you can run at 144hz

Bro i have the same Monitor and almost the same laptop just the difference in i have 1050ti but this problem is when i play valorant in windowed full-screen mode i get 120hz but when try to play in full-screen mode i get 30hz . Please help me please

Yah, you need to change it to windowed full screen, when playing valorant. I suggest to change your resolution to 1680x1050 to run 144hz on windowed full screen

@@vzztv3490 its capable to run 165hz, but it came with a display port and there are no connecters on my pc that fit it, on my graphics card it is only 1 slot that is HDMI

yep. it can do 120hz on 1080p and also check if it has hdmi port or dvi

@@tylerladera hdmi is good enough. before you a 144monitor check the monitor specs if it can run 144hz on hdmi. but most of the monitor now can do run 144hz at hdmi port

I have an MSi gf75 thin 9rcx and an external monitor asus vg248qg 165hz but I only get 120 hz , the monitor specs said that I can get 144hz over HDMI , but it seems not true , only 120hz , even when I followed your steps . Is it because of my laptop ? or the hdmi cable I am using ?
It because of the laptop, just like mine icant run 1080p 144hz. You need to lower down your resolution.

@@franciscoignacio850 yes I used a custom resolution utility and created the resolution 1680*1050 160 Hz and then I set that resolution on default (recommended) which means the 1920*1080 is not the default one anymore , after resetting pc the custom resolution is created and works fine in desktop , but ingame u have to choose a lower resolution like 1280*960 so you can play on fullscreen not windowed.

do you watch the full video? you need to create a custom resolution after you install the driver that i post on the description...
