'A giant wheezing kazoo': Golden Gate Bridge starts to 'sing' after design fix ► www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/jun/06/golden-gate-bridge-san-francisco-sings
Used to work as a vibrations engineer, and my job was to prevent metal work failing due to noise and vibration. Can't say for sure but high volume vibration like that is likely going to lead to metal fatigue and cause something to fail. Especially if its loud because its setting off the bridge's "resonant frequency" and the bridge is ringing in sympathy with the noise. This seems likely given how far away it can be heard.
My thought too. That is disturbingly loud. I reckon wind tunnel tests did not consider the higher frequencies that do not cause the actual span to vibrate at very low frequency (like the Tacomas Narrows Bridge). I'm an audio engineer and have seen metal fatigue damage to stamped metal speaker frames in this frequency range after many years of vibration. The resonant frequency here is 420 to 500hz with a wavelength roughly 0.77meters . I reckon, dampening by adding mass, cutting holes , or tacking on dampeners in under engineering investigation.
@@Ormigadesign The bridge was tolled both ways from its opening in 1937, but starting in 1968 tolling was only charged for southbound traffic. Fastrak lanes, which read an electronic pass at low speeds, were added in 2002; 2013 was the year when the last staffed toll taker booths were closed and all southbound tolling was converted to Fastrak. So I'm guessing if you didn't pay a toll in 2012, you were either heading northbound, or you took advantage of the Fastrak lanes heading southbound!
The sound coming from the bridge are a result of a project "designed to make the bridge more aerodynamic under high wind conditions and is necessary to ensure the safety and structural integrity of the bridge for generations to come,"
I find the first video oddly soothing. Wouldn't want to be any closer than where the video's being filmed, but it'd lull me right to sleep because it drowns out my tinnitus.
It's perfect! It's beautifully eerie to hear such sounds coming off of an amazing and iconic structure in such a beautiful setting! I love hearing this!
I got PhD on cable vibrarions and this is definitely unwanted behaviour. What we hear is an obvious resonance and what every engineer wants on his structure is exactly the opposite. Engineer wants all the parts to not have common resonance frequencies and the excitation from the environment to be very unlikely. Clearly maintanance costs will rise. I have not idea what are the conditions for this to heppend ut the most dangerouse conditiona are when rain and wind meet each other. Then the drops form wing profile while dripping away from the structure (cable etc.) Hopefully they will fix it soon.
the vertical arm, that has square holes in it, so when the wind hits it, it whistles. take a coach's whistle, blow hard into it, and that's how you get that noise. it could also be that the wind is trapped underneath the structure causing the trumpeting type sounds too.
I drive over the bridge twice a day, almost seven days a week. I'd never heard the sound before and couldn't imagine not noticing the sound, or the sound never being part of the folklore of SF and the GGB. I thought maybe I'd been transported to another dimension or a parallel Earth. I'm VERY relieved to find that the singing (reminds me of whalesong) is a new thing. I hope the vibrations aren't going to eventually damage anything because it's eerie but incredibly beautiful and is a gift from the cosmos.
I don’t think it happens all the time. Just when the wind is blowing at the right angle. I don’t usually hear it either, but yesterday the bridge was singing so loudly I could hear it from Lower Pac Heights / Nopa!
Are they sure it's not just a MOTS concert? ;-) Modular On The Spot are (sometimes unauthorized) electronic music concerts that happen in various public locations like parks where musicians bring modular synthesizers and perform a wide array of styles such as drone, noise, ambient, melodic, and beat orientated music/sound.
I think it's beautiful. It's like this juxtaposition of nature and the human-made environment - appropriate for the Golden Gate itself (before the bridge was built, the natural inlet was known as "The Golden Gate"). I want to go up there and sample it.
I want this to be one of the last remaining structures after humanity is gone, have it to continue to make that noise and baffle alien archaeologists for centuries.
The Golden Gate Bridge was singing so loudly all day yesterday! I went on a hike at Point Bonitas and the sound was pretty unnerving. When I got back to my apartment in Nopa, I could still hear it! Wild. Sounds like aliens landing in a sci-fi movie.
What they've done, purposely or not, is create a giant Aeolian harp. I have (a small) one on my porch and love the sound it sometimes makes in the breeze, but wouldn't want it 24/7.

When did it start to happen
Sounds like it's summoning Siren Head, that's all we need this year.
omfg-

You know i hate siren head
O mio dio

Just what I was about to point out myself💢💥👍👏

Don’t say that in 2020. Seems like everything bad is happening this year
@@leolayton8611 And all by DESIGN!!
👍
Sound like horror movie sound track
Lol, not the feedback they were going for.
jake it’s siren head
Agreed!
Horror???? i find it very relaxing...
Imagine that at night 😬
No.
Blup Blup yep, just no
Should sound the same as during the day...
@@TheMrbeasely alright ya clever sausage 💁🏼♂️
@@TheMrbeasely But blacker ;-)
Engineer : let's make it more aerodynamic.
Bridge: imma bout to end this man's whole career
2020 - Wait there's more
Yep. Mothman coming to the bridge at nite with that horror music lol
It never stops
@@nycwizrd8348 A man of culture, I see.
2020: *no....there is another*
Chris Morris voice: _This is the one thing we didn't want to happen_
That's the same sound I make everytime I pay $8 to cross that bridge.
There's a toll to cross the bridge?
Miroslav Boljević if you drive back to SF yes. It’s $7.35 if you have a pass or $8.20 without it.
@@miroslav.boljevic Yup, I believe it's to support the bus lines and ferries that are supposed to reduce congestion on the bridge.
Wait, is that new? In 2012 when I was there last I didn't have to pay toll... :/

Suppose you were driving over a bridge and you began hearing the tune of "London Bridge is..."
I was thinking more like the tune of Full House...
Only a problem if you're in London...
Funny
can someone make a 1 hour version of this
The perfect vibrations can cause buildings to crumble or liquify 😬
Supposedly, upgrades to the bridge to prolong its life and keep it sturdy, are the cause of this new noise.
The sound coming from the bridge are a result of a project "designed to make the bridge more aerodynamic under high wind conditions and is necessary to ensure the safety and structural integrity of the bridge for generations to come,"

I like how the project was originally set out to make the bridge better, but they somehow made the thing worse 😂

those are the voices of all the people who tossed themselves over the edge

sounds of minecaft in a cave:
Wow, it's definitely got range. But the bridge is such a theater kid.

2020 the year that aliens design a bridge
Lol no, it's just the wind blowing against the strings
this bridge was actually designed by a Polish engineer, not the aliens!!
Adam Uppsala Thats the best the OP could come up with kinda sad
Why didnt residents hear this while building phase? This will make you seriously sick, destroy your homes value and makes you move!
This was just added from a recent project.
if this lowers SF home value that'd be a blessing to the city

I think the sound frequency and spectrum need to be analyzed.

siren head comfirrmed?
Yes
I heard it loud & clear in the sunset district yesterday while walking. It sounds kinda amazing.
Its a nice sound. But can you also hear rivets falling out? Hope not.
They should really figure out what frequency it's putting out and the amount of vibration being exacted on the structure.
A model was already tested in a wind tunnel.

"Open up That Golden Gate...." San Francisco, Sci-fi ! 🖤 🐈 🎶 🎼 🐱
High on the hill it calls to me 🎶
Above the blue & windy sea 🎶
Not sure why they tampered with perfection, but the redesign of the railing for the GGB has produced a new "Sound of the City". And so it goes ...
Yeah, sure, why not. Pile it on, 2020.
Hopefully next year I'll take a trip to san Francisco to hear and make a video on this sweet sound
Damn I just noticed that the bridge was actually making this sound...
I wonder what type of animals will that sound attract and what kind will it hurt
RIP to all the jumpers.
the ghosts of the poor workers who died building it. working under threat of losing their jobs they died because safety was ignored.
When I was down in New York before going to Florida, the Verrazano Narrows Bridge doesn’t sing.
Reminds me of the Singing Towets of Derilium!
I would totally go there to record this with high quality microphones. But it must be really annoying for the people living there...
maddening......
Ah the humor of unintended consequences....
My mom got so mad at me for showing her this lol
Why?!😂
David Lynch is just filming S4 of Twin Peaks
The new soundtrack for 2020.
I foynd this very relaxing

Anybody want to buy a bridge?
Probably steel slipping or cable activity
Sounds badass. Hope they keep it forever.
this just makes the bridge even cooler imo, I live 4 miles from it. Beats some of the lame art projects down around here.
This might attract aliens.
Already has...
Stunning!
How awful this must be for the wild like and noise pollution. Nobody really cares about the planet let’s be honest
That is definitely weird.
The souls of the deceased are possessing the bridge as they are begging to be free
Thats an odd comment.
Winds howling
All the rich people moving out of San Francisco, wonder what they know that we don't?
That there’s cheaper land else where that’s worth the money
TSUNAMI 🌊 JUDGEMENT DAY IS COMING
The bridge needs to be given a recording contract. It makes a better noise than today's singers.
LITERALLY FACTS
