For this who want to know, I think this is about being friends with someone who has depression/anxiety while you have your own issues

So what I think this song is about is that lemon boy is like the shy kid or a kid with anger issues (why he calls him a bittersweet boy) and he wants to become friends with robin. Robin is hesitant at first but they eventually become friends. robin starts acting like lemon boy and robins friends don’t like lemon boy because of his personality. Robin doesn’t care and they stay friends. Soon robin is scared of losing lemon boys friendship (what if I run out of fertilizer, what if the clouds run out of rain, etc.) but he concludes that he won’t and eventually they become best friends

This was actually the first song that my ex-boyfriend dedicated to me. He used to believe that I was the lemon boy he had been waiting for. Guess what? he was the one who got tired of me. I still love him though. I still don't get the fact that I thought we will always be forever regardless of how hard life is. Lemon Boy is a representation of our inner childhood. As kids, we tend to see the world from a brighter perspective. That's why lemon boy always grows back like a weed because the narrator is still a child. Playing outside then it starts to rain? Fine, then play under the rain. It was simple back then.
But as we grow older we tend to get a grasp on reality. Truth is, the world is ugly. We start to get pressured by what society expects us to do and worry about things we can't control. Hence the lyrics, what if we run out of fertilizer, what if the clouds run out of rain, whales start to beach themselves, and tortoise shells tear away from their spine?
In the end, he just accepts Lemon Boy as a part of him. Not getting too attached to material things and living a simple life like Snufkin and little my. Appreciate the little things and always see the bright side in bad situations.
Also, I love how he starts with "Lemon Boy and me" and then it became "Lemon Boy and I" in the end. Like how we realize right vs wrong as we grow older but also become boring, formal adults.😂

I remember listening this song on repeat two years ago, and i came up with a lil story.
It's the story of a young boy, who is very shy and unsure of himself. A energetic and bittersweet boy starts to hang out with him at the kindergarten and they quickly become best friends. The both opposite are getting along so well, they play together everyday. But one day they fighted over a silly thing and the lemony boy got pushed on the road by the shy boy, and was hit by a car.
The shy boy was feeling absolutely guilty and traumatized by that, of course. He couldn't accept what he had done, and in absolute denial he started having the same friendship with a yellow pillow with a smile drew on it.

I think this song is about him having some sort of mental illness or anxiety, and that is “lemon boy” and he is basically singing about how he got used to having “lemon boy” so he learned how to get along with it and the line “what it lemon boy don’t grow no longer” I think that since he lived with “lemon boy” for so long that he will miss it or something. Also that the line “Then his bitter sweet started to rub off on me, you’d think smelling like lemon zest would be pretty neat” was him saying that it started to affect him. I found this out a couple days ago and totally changed what I think while listening to this song.

If you look at the behind the scenes it wasn't planned at all and that's the only reason there was a cut there because they all freaked out

I think this song is about befriending a misfit of society. When he says 'I found out that my friends were more of the savoury type' he means his friends had started to express their discomfort of being around that person. In 'What if I run out of fertilizer?' he is worried about not being able to protect that misfit from being targeted by society. At the end of the song he becomes just like him, but does not care as long as he is with his friend.
