Weird Al It threw me for a loop and was quite a distraction, but it didn't seem to bother Ms. Hewitt. I really wish it wasn't there but what can you do.
It was not a shot.Just someone that really had so much gas in his stomach,so when he tried to sneak it out, everything went wrong,(dont you know that?) so it came out in that strange mufled way.It sounded wet too.lmao!
I play the piano and I particularly love this song. Playing it is always a very emotional moment for me so I understand perfectly Angela's facial movements, as I do it myself too. My favorite time to play is when there's nobody home, because I can play freely and express myself through the music. With others listening and watching I never manage to do this. That's why I admire Angela so much. She really feels this song and she absolutely knows how to use her gift to offer an amazing performance to the public. Thank you!
I absolutely love her facial expressions. I don't know why many of you got bothered. It means she's connecting with Debussy's music, from another time, through her piano, and that's pretty awesome. I think most of you hated her expressions cause you think she's trying to show up, and you totally lost the real meaning of this performance.
Some people are not familiar with the idea of connecting to the music. Maybe they think it's only a matter of playing the notes in the right order. You know, the accountant's way of doing things.
WHAT . A. POOLITE!!! AUDIENCE! I loovveee how polite the audience was OMG! They VERY respectfully waited until the MUSIC was out of the air. BRILLIANT piece and rendition too
I’m sorry everyone else but this is literally the best interpretation this piece has ever received. It makes me feel the feels I don’t wanna feel, you feel me? I cry a little ....
I always thought Debussy channeled this straight from the angelic realm. It goes straight into my soul. This is a beautiful performance and she captures the magnificence of the piece. Well done. Thank you for giving me the feeling of an angel's love.
I never put it in to words in my head but in all honesty, I completely agree that it is as if Debussy pulled this song out of an angelic realm. It is just beyond beautiful, transcendent and tranquil. It is my very favorite musical work of all times.
Anyone who says anything about her facial expressions must have never lost themselves in a piece , playing live especially makes you tune into your inner self and 'ride' the waves that are music. Beautiful piece of art
So right. At least she isn’t making so many facial and bodily contortions to distract from the playing. Example: look up the vide of Yang Yang playing this. I couldn’t get past the first page.
This is human kind at it's very best. Centuries apart-this very talented lady is bringing to life emotions entangled within old squiggles on a piece of paper.
It is apparent from the comments, that we have a whole generation raised on computer games, TV, etc... Keep calm and appreciate the music and don't concentrate on minor things. I regularly come back to this performance and even that sound after the second minute can't distract me from this pure performance.
This song is the music I listen to under a full moon with the woman I love, if I ever find her....... Ughhh there is a certain amount of sadness that also comes with beauty and love....if you know.... you know. With such great highs come such low lows. I just want to listen to this with a girl on the beach at night and just not think about literally ANY BILLS OR JOBS OR ANYTHING BUT JUST think about that exact moment together with my arm around her. Anyway, I just hope someone else agrees so my faith in humanity can be restored.
I can't believe - this wonderful Piano isn't existing anymore... - This is so sad. Great artist, Angela, of course! You played your Instrument with heart, soul and love... I feel with you - all the best...
this is amazingly beautiful. my mother played, and she played this song very similar, I have some recordings, and even as a child, I could not hear this song without it bringing tears to my eyes. I come to this video often, and it still gets me every time. thank you so much to Angela Hewitt!
My jaw dropped listening to this! I mean the delicacy of the first section and the impeccable build up was just flawless. This was so full of emotion and it triggers the human soul. Magical piece by Debussy performed to its very best by Hewitt. She is now my role model. Also can people not throw a hammer at the ground or cough for six minutes. I boiled with anger at 2:35. These kind of people ruin record worthy performances. Seriously, what the hell was that.
An absolutely MASTERFUL rendition of this unspeakably fabulous work. Softeness...oh so soft at the appropriate time..but really an ability to STRIKE the major notes intended by the composer.....Lovely, beginning to end. THANK YOU
I wish more of her playing Debussy could be added here. Her superlative disk has whetted our appetite but I guess all we can do is be grateful she has graced us with that release. Like you I am so happy that we can share her superlative music making. We are truly blessed to have her in our lives!
Proving that Clair de Lune will always be a beautiful piece. I equally both love listening to this with my eyes closed and watching it, with her facial expressions. Makes me feel like I'm in a different time.
My heart is filled with the splendor of her performance with incomparable skill and exquisite technique and gorgeous attire . From Tokyo of the Land of the Rising Sun 🇯🇵 I'm just intoxicated with her fabulous performance in Japan
Clair de Lune at it's best. Very passionate tune and great execution. When i was younger facial expressions were funny to me, but now i understand it - it's the passion and connection to the song which has to be strong when you want to play a perfect piece like this.
Someone has said, "If you understand this song, then you have "soul" in your life. You also understand what life is all about." A beautiful song played by many fine performers that has lasted over time.
They say Classical Music stimulates brain function, for all its varying musical notes. Perhaps, though I cannot confirm. However, what I can at this moment, confirm is. This stunning piece, stimulated my heart & soul, function. Exquisite job Angela, on a timeless, classical masterpiece. You have me coming back, again & again and each time I get the exact same "Feels" I did, when I first listened to your beautiful rendition of Debussy's Clair de Lune.
This is absolutely beautiful and beautifully played also.. And by her facial expressions you can see that she is really into it.. Theres only one word for it and that is AMAZING :)
I'm not sure if her smile at the end is because of a satisfying performance, or delight at an audience that holds... and holds... and holds... until she's good and ready for them to applaud, satisfied that the last note has completely died away.
as a fellow pianist who plays this piece, i guarantee you it has nothing to do with either. it has to do with the singing, sonorous beauty of the music, especially of the last few notes ringing and dying out. she's listening with her eyes closed, enjoying them, drinking them in, wanting to get every last bit. i do the same thing at the end of every one of my pieces, even moreso when nobody else is listening because i know when they are, they're impatient for me to lift my pedal foot and be "done" it's not at all about ego. my GOD i hate how non-musiciasns don't get musicians at all
It seems that a lot of those who posted here came to see a facial recital rather than to listen to good music. My only complaint here is that the camera doesn't let us see how she moved her hands, but I enjoyed the music, and her facial expressions reflect how she feels. Why don't you go to listen to someone who can play without any expression whatsoever, see if you enjoy emotionless music better?
The camera angle is the problem. I do not have to see the performer’s face. An overhead shot of her hands would be better. Or, from the back, the arm movements and you can sniff her butt too. Artists do not have to show emotion on their face or dance with their body when playing their instrument. Put everything into their fingers and performance.
Why all this chatter about her facial expressions? When you have this much talent you can make any damned face you want. It's about the music. If you don't like her expression, just close your eyes and enjoy this superb rendition of one of the most beautiful pieces ever written. Jeesh!
Julianadowns, agree with you 100%..cann't expect everyone to understand that music is a form of expression that is not only heard by our hears, but, by our entire body and soul. Those who make stupid comments about her intense body and facial expressions just don't simply understand music or anything intense for that matter. Cannot not ask an apple tree to make marmalade. Good comment Juliana.
I am 66 years old know. When I was in junior high over 50 years ago, I played an organ rendition of this song at my music class. Sadly, I was too young to understand how to put the emotion into the song. I am now back into my own piano and organ world and appreciate seeing this type of performance. Thank you.
Unnecessary facial expressions after playing the last note, listening with headphones on full blast and almost died from a heart attack at 2:35 Wtf was that!
1964tamsin one of the many reasons young people etc..are put off by classical music because of the 'snobbery' and this kind of thing does not help, pulling faces all over the place is something I will never understand, you dont have to do any of it to play piano, its showing off in my opinion, and I certainly would not feel comfortable making those kind of false expressions in front of a crowd of people, maybe at home lol where no one can see. And Lang Lang I cant even watch him, he takes expressions to a whole new level, I like to watch real great musicians who dont feel they have to show everyone over the top feelings towards the music, Horowitz for example, just sat there an played, if you feel the music you feel the music, its within you, I dont see it is an external thing, certainly not to the extent they seem to feel it.
I would be flinching if something like that happened while i'm playing the piano, but this woman did not flinch because she is indulged in playing this music till the end. She's very amazing 0.0
Suite bergamasque (clair de lune), Claude Debussy. Of all the renditions of this incredible (and my absolute favorite) piece of music on UA-cam, I think this one speaks more to what Debussy was trying to get across than any other. Truly a world-class performance, and I'm honored to live in a day and age where technology can bring it right to my fingertips. Bravo, Angela.
I've listened many times to this interpretation and in my opinion it's simply magnificent. In a limited number of bars any human feeling is brought to life: emotion, beauty passion, nostalgy, love, gentleness, tenderness. You can also clearly feel that everything she's expressing through Debussy's notes comes straight from her soul. From a technical point of view touch, articulation, phrasing, clarity, and separation of the voices are superb.
hell i play piano, and every time i play all i can think is "DAMN i wish i had a camera to laugh later at my facial expressions while playing!!!". There's just something magical about the instrument that brings out aspects of yourself that you cannot hide. It's the ultimate in expression, and coming onto youtube and going ugh whats with her face flaunts only ignorance and gives a laugh to those in the know. Very delicate, very beautiful. But slow down the opening theme, it's the money maker. But hell, i can shut up because that's what's awesome about impressionist pieces; interpretation of the player is most important, and you definitely made it your own :)
Despite the gunshot and coughs this is always the best version for me.
Gunshot. Literally laughed out loud. :)
CBC Music I was just thinking to myself "What gunshot," ...then I heard it LOL

The gunshot and coughing add atmosphere.

That "gunshot" at 2:35 was brutal. No excuse for that. Angela's performance is flawless and not a single misstep. Awesome.

Its not a song, it’s a piece. So much for playing the piano

Sorry about dropping my iPhone at the 2:34 mark -- I was trying to snap a selfie.
Eric Shook That's your phone? I always thought it was her coach telling her "10 seconds! Finish strong!"
What - you and Angie? - could see that would be tricky - twisting round in your seat and shoving your phone into the face of the person behind you!
That’s Abe Lincoln assassinated by John Wilkes Booth. The facial expression on the old broad at the ending?! Time to show more cleavage.

Hello, Piano Unlimited Academy. I wrote that paragraph approximately, three months ago.
