The book inspired my favorite band,Our Lady Peace to make the album called Spirtual Machines.

if every "word" has a technical description, then programmers in the future will more easily assemble the computer application system. for example: "Make an electric car that can fly at speeds of 2030 kilometers per hour". then the computer will execute the command in an integrated manner.

Thank you for the upload but I really wish it was in at least 1080P. The video is blurry. Regardless, thank you for the upload.

The footage was shot in 1999 - 1080p is out of the question! LOL

things didnt quite go as he said but growth has still been pretty insane
ps1 wasnt even capable of 1 Gflop
ps5 will perform over 10 Tflops.
in only 25 years GPU compute has increased 10 thousand times over.
The fastest supercomputer at this time in the 90s did 1 TFLOP
the fastest next year will be post k capable of 1 exaflop (1 million fold increase)
china already has plans to open a zettascale computer by 2035 (1 billion fold increase)

10 thousand time increase is not that much right? if you consider exponential increase

Isnt it funny how as computational capabilities increase it just gets harder and harder for us to understand the world. Building a reliance on systems we cant even hope to comprehend. A strange time

You laugh at this but completely forget what kind of technological world 1999 was. The things Kurzweil is predicting in this video have held up astonishingly well.

@@prohsodie This is why one does not make specific predictions about technology in the future. Hundreds of misguided quotes by famous people have shown this.

SoCalFreelance I’m not sure what part you even think is funny. The part where he said machines will be able to read all of the world’s knowledge that will be out on the web by 2015?? IBM’s Watson did this in 2011 when it won at Jeopardy against two jeopardy champions. It acquired its knowledge by “reading” a massive amount of literature on the web.

@@prohsodie You're not being intellectually honest. Your examples are a far cry from *understanding* knowledge and language. *No* computer has passed the Turing test.

SoCalFreelance Do you know what year Kurzweil has predicted that a computer will pass the Turing Test? Apparently you don’t. So who is being intellectually dishonest? Do a quick Google search. Since he wrote The Age of Spiritual Machines (PRIOR to this lecture), Kurzweil has been saying 2029 is when a computer will pass the Turing Test. We are currently in 2020 (last I checked). Do your homework before commenting, man. C’mon.

I'm Ray Kurzweil and because I am Jewish I have to use the term spiritual. Like it actually means something. Absolute nonsense. But of course, I will never make friends talking like that. Like "friends" means something. So many terms have lost all meaning, like "creation" for example which literally means from nothing, something appears. The term "friend" was exclusively used to denote the opposite of foe. People lit Ray are programming computers with language. The amount of errors my google home makes. And it is not its fault, I am very patient and forgiving of it. It is worth a quick mention that the term "forgiving" is a little bit dodgy. This kind of poor language use is a significant reason the human species is facing such an existential risk from, what is laughably called "AI". Humnanity really has no means whth which to ensure its future with such a tecnology.
