    Like the final result, but, was most impressed with the error correction. One thing a lot of people skip over is how to deal with errors and that it isn't a "strip it and start over" moment every time you make a mistake. Showing how easy it is to fix really stops beginning painters from being disheartened.

      It's something that came up on a previous video, where someone mentioned finding it useful that they could see how I fixed a problem. It seemed like it'd be useful to keep those little bits in for exactly that reason; you can fix the little things, and it doesn't need to be the end of the world. :) Recovering after a mistake is its own skill, I figure, so I'm going to leave in any little flubs from now on.

      Listen, if I want the reinforcements I've got to fill in the paperwork the way the Departmento Munitorum requires, and that means I gotta write 'Astra Militarum' at the top of the page! I can get away with saying Imperial Guard as much as I like... so long as there's no commissars within earshot!

    I'm just starting to get into painting minis, and I've found your videos super helpful so far because you constantly reinforce why you do things as you go. Thanks! Quick question: in the 'simple Astra Militarum' video, you drybrushed the cloth pants before the wash, whereas you washed then highlighted this guy. Any reason to choose one method over the other? They both looked great in the end, and the drybrush-then-wash method looked much more doable for a newbie!
    Thanks again

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  6 років тому +2

      With the ordinary Guardsman, the fatigues make up most of the miniature, so drybrushing them is the quickest way to get that shade and highlight in one fell swoop. With the Scions there's actually very little visible clothing, so it's not quite as effective. It actually works out a little bit easier to go back in and paint the trousers in this fashion than trying to stay neat and tidy around an area you've drybrushed that's surrounded by detail, I find.
      If you find it's still not quite working out how you'd like, try putting on the Zandri Dust basecoat, then hit it straight with some highlights of Ushabti Bone, and don't worry too much if they look a little thick or crooked. Do that before you shade the miniature in Agrax Earthshade, and it'll help tidy up any of those little rogue splotches or crooked highlights. :D

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  6 років тому +1

      I don't usually go back over with the base colour unless something goes really funky. It can happen sometimes if you manage to put a little too much on, but in most cases once you highlight you'll barely notice it. Just try a little less shade next time around!

    Hi! Not directly related to this video, but I’m interested in returning to painting after butchering Ultramarines when I was younger! What steps would you suggest I take to get back into painting? How much should I invest in paints/what kits would you suggest I get to get back into 40K painting?

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  6 років тому +2

      If you're keen on getting back into Ultramarines specifically and this video was any use to you, take a look at the one where I attack blue power armour specifically! ua-cam.com/video/7wJtKOf4YVU/v-deo.html It's a pretty limited palette, so not too many paints to pick up.
      Depending on what you're interested in painting these days, though, there's not really any specific paint sets from Citadel for most armies. They offer bundles of paints, but there's usually not much off the top and you'll probably end up with a handful you won't use terribly often. It's a mixed bag, but you're honestly better off picking up the ones you like the look of. If you're getting started again, I thoroughly suggest the Base range as a good place to start, as well as the Shades to go with them. I think it'd be worth finding a few tutorials you like the look of and picking up some of the first few paints from those to get your eye in, see what you think works!
      As far as brushes I'd definitely suggest Citadel or Army Painter as nice, relatively cheap and reliable brushes to get back into the game with. Citadel's got the edge in being a little more easily available, but both will do much the same thing, though I'd definitely lean toward Citadel's awesome drybrushes. A small and a medium sized layer brush, a couple of basecoat brushes, a shade brush and a medium drybrush will do almost everything you need to get started without breaking the bank!
      As for kits? Pick something you like the look of! Space Marines remain a great place to get started and cut your teeth, and with 8th Edition being fairly open about what armies can ally with who you can paint up a couple of squads and play with them alongside most anything else in the game if you're just wanting to practice first. Personally, I'm always biased toward the Imperial Guard, but I think the best place to start is always what you find interesting. Good luck, and welcome back! :D

      It can be pretty daunting getting back into it! There's a lot of options out there these days. If you've got a store local to you, though, sticking with Citadel for the most part does make things a lot easier, though if you can hunt out a supplier that offers Vallejo paints for certain basecoats you might find it a bunch easier. The staff in-store are generally pretty helpful, too! Though... they kinda do want you to buy stuff, too. ;)

    Great vid, keep them coming :)

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  6 років тому

      If you wanted to stick to a silver trim, I'd probably keep it quite dark so there's a bit of contrast against the armour. Personally, I quite like the brass. Once it's had that last highlight of Liberator Gold, it's fairly similar in tone to the fatigues - it keeps to the palette and breaks up the green without introducing a whole new colour, more or less. Silver would probably work similarly, but again, I'd definitely try and keep it darker.

    • @SirCorneliusJ
      @SirCorneliusJ 6 років тому +1

      I was thinking with sticking to a darker, Grey/navy colour scheme for the model, and I want to try to keep the use of gold to a minimum as a part of my regiment. I'm not a fan of the brass as I generally don't like the torso of the Scions, but hopefully a darker silver trim will help to adress that :)
      ... Either that or I try and torso-swap with regular Cadians...

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  6 років тому

      Oooh. If you're planning a deep navy for the armour, then a silver trim would actually work really well, I think. Keep the gold to a minimum for spot colours, but yeah, I think that'd work really well. From trying it myself, swapping the Scion arms onto the Cadian torsos is a bit of a muckabout. It works, but it takes a lot of fudging to get the hand to meet the left arm properly - just stick to the silver, instead! You might try once everything is highlighted going back to it with a little Nuln Oil to darken it even further.

    I love your videos, also, I am getting back into 40k, I haven't painted in many many years, so I guess my question is where do I start? Is there starter kits out there with paints and minis?

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  6 років тому

      Good question! There are a couple of starter sets with paints included, though they tend to be smaller pots that're really more of a taster than the beginnings of a collection. You can get boxed sets of each of the 'types' of Citadel paints, though, and I particularly recommend the Base Paint Set, as you'll find a use for all of those fairly regularly and it saves a little money versus buying them separately. Then pick up whichever Layer and Dry paints you're interested in to go with the troops you're interested in.
      If you're really looking for a big bunch of miniatures, tools and some paints to get you started, though, there's the Dark Imperium Starter Collection. Again, it's the smaller pots of paint, but you can top those up and replace them as you need. www.games-workshop.com/en-EU/Dark-Imperium-Essentials-Collection-ENG-2017

  • @The_Last_Storm
    @The_Last_Storm 5 років тому

    I really wish the Kasrkin were still a thing. I use Forgeworlds hostile environment conversations for all my Militarum troops, so if I could use Kasrkins as my scions in the army they would look so nice because they looks basically the same as the hostile evo conversations but with more armor and hot-shat lasguns, so they’d just mix into the army much more nicely

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  5 років тому

      You might find those hazardous environment helmets look pretty good on the Scions. I know some folks have been using them to convert with Cadian legs, but I don't think you'd need to go to that extent; just that familiar helmet profile with the plugged-in hellguns and extra carapace would do the business, I think!

      Honestly, I find it's very rarely necessary to paint a miniature in stages just to get to the chest. If you can't reach it with a brush easily, you generally can't see it that often. Easier to just leave a little bit of primer and a touch of green in there rather than fuss with it endlessly.

    Great tutorial, keep the great work. Bullshit new names, kasrkin will be always kasrkin. Also as a Spanish mini painter, kasrkin sounds crazy different in english.

    Kasrkin?! That's no Kasrkin... it's one of those pansy Tempestus Scions. Cadian Elite > Astra Militarum Elite
    Rambling aside, great video again. Keep them coming!

      Gotta make do with what's on the requisition forms! If the Departmento Munitorum ships you red berets and a hotshot lasgun pack, you strap them on and do battle with what you've got. ;)

      they are a section of their own that fall under commissars... they have nothing to do with Cadia but Astra Militarium in general

      Because it's spelled Kasrkin? Referring to the old Cadian word for fortress, kasr. So Kasr-Kin.
