This was a great talk! To add to that last question, I would say that going directly from one religion to atheism rather than another religion(s) is actually due to the fundamentalist nature of Mormonism. I went from a very dogmatic, fundamentalist Baptist faith to atheism. I think that when you've been indoctrinated to believe that the bible is literally true and to recognize that if any of it is false then it is wholly unreliable as the word of the omniscient god, it is very difficult to accept any other religion or version of a religion. Baptists are also really good at poking holes in every other religion, including other Christian denominations. When the foundation of my belief system was shown to be irrational, atheism was my only intellectually honest option.

I disagree that the Mormon Welfare program is something the United States should emulate. I have seen handicapped people demoralized pretty badly when they need help. Even with the able-bodied, a person who has paid tithing and fast offerings for years along with having done much free labor for the church already, and is over-extended with kids and laborious job hunting, should not be expected to work additional hours in order to get a food order or whatever help they need. It may be a different story for an inactive who has not paid tithes or offerings or done any free work for the church. The LDS church is ingenious with demoralizing their faithful hardworking members. But they put that tithing money into high interest accounts so they can reap more money, which is then used in business ventures to reap even more money, which they do not bless the struggling tithe-paying members with Who is robbing God here? The United States will always struggle with their welfare programs and work requirements, but they do not need to look to the Mormons as an example of how to do it right.

Dogmatic thinking is a characteristic of human psychology and is not limited to any particular cosmology. Ultimately every cosmology, whether it be atheism or some form of deism, depends on faith. The object of that faith will differ but not the act of faith itself. Any cosmology that does not take its dependency on faith into account is at odds with itself. I say this as someone who is pretty much an agnostic.
But I did enjoy the talk.

Harold Crews Physical cosmology is the scientific study of the origin, evolution, large-scale structures and dynamics, and ultimate fate of the universe, as well as the scientific laws that govern these realities. It is based on scientific observation and mathematics, not faith or religion.

Because atheism is a belief system that is not empirically testable. Science cannot disprove the existence of god or gods. And even if it could because metaphysics and epistemology are interdependent certainty becomes an immense begging of the question or circular argument.

No Harold, atheism is not a belief system it is a position statement in response to a claim that has repeatedly failed to meet its burden of proof. Science does not even attempt to disprove gods just as it does not seek to disprove the existence of leprechauns or unicorns. The burden of proof is ALWAYS on the people making the claim and until they produce anything resembling evidence I remain unconvinced.
