MAKING A DITTY BAG

  • In this video I'm making a Ditty Bag. This bag pattern can be found in The Arts of the Sailor by Hervey Garrett Smith. For me though, I wanted to make something similar ever since I saw Ben Stiller's character galavanting around Iceland carrying a bag in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.
For the sake of the video, I made it the same size as the pattern, but in the future I will be making it bigger to accommodate more items and with waxed canvas. Here I'm using blue canvas, unwaxed unfortunately (since that's what I had at the time), and some 4-5oz Montana Tan leather I picked up from Tandy Leather Factory.
What do you think? Do you want one? Let me know in the comments below.

I saw the secret life of Walter Mitty too and was inspired by the same bag and that’s how I ended up at this tutorial lol

LIVING ON A BOAT WHILE I WAS IN SAN DIEGO, I CAN TELL YOU THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN A GREAT BAG FOR ME HEADING TO THE DOCK OR AROUND TOWN FOR A QUICK TRIP. HERE IS MY SUGGESTIONS. 1. YES MAKE THE BOTTOM LARGER. MAYBE ADD HALF OF YOUR DIA ON TO IT. 2. CANVAS OR RIPPED. 3.MAKE THE OPENING WIDER. 4. PUT A LOCK ON IT. 5. KEEP THE PRICE REASONABLE SO US OLD SALTY DOGS CAN BUY ONE.

This is a nice idea. We were looking for a Soldier's ditty bag but saw your video. Really nice item, nice work, and nice video!

Hey! Nice job on the bag.👏👏 Thanks for sharing.
You should have shown your mistake, we all make them and we probably learn even more by our mistakes.
I have 3 sewing machines that I don’t use often enough, but you have inspired me now... 👍👍

Thank you for the encouragement. In reality the stitching wasn't completely awful or structurally problematic, but aesthetically would have driven me crazy and not something I would have wanted to showcase on the finished product. I'll show next time, but in the moment I wanted to throw it in trash haha. Glad I was able to inspire you, though! Happy crafting 😊

Awesome job... but I want to hand stitch mine. ;-) - Love the colour combination of blue and brown, might have to copy that. Thanks for sharing.

Nice bag, sailors are smart craftsmen. I would love to sew a similar bag for myself. Could you write me the measurements? Thank you.

Awesome job on the bag! I like it, but I feel like it would be too small for what I normally carry lol.

I agree. My hope is to make a larger one to accommodate more items. More of a weekender type of bag capacity.

    Nice job man!
If you make another you should try waxing to rope for longevity.

😮wow professional !! shit i couldn't even sew a mask thinking to make the easiest thing with a square ditty bag but hard to make a circle for a mini pan & pot for camping any tips?

Thanks! There is some math involved, you will need to figure out what size circle you will need, then get the circumference for the body of the bag, and not to mention it's a good idea to add about 1/4" - 1/2" seam to give yourself some breathing room. It's pretty forgiving once you start sewing it together; just clip it in place and remove the clips as you sew along. Good luck!

I would love the chance to post pictures on UA-cam so I can show how much you inspired me, I had to try and make my own ditty bag. I’m still trouble shooting my own design and have posted a couple pictures on my insta colby.petty.12 I want to show you I tried

Nice bag but just a little too feminine for my taste.
