  • I thought I was going to crash the Liberty Square Riverboat at Walt Disney World when one evening all the lights on the boat went out. During a moonless, cool, night the boat's diesel standby-generator kicked on without warning, even though everything on the boat was operating normally. Somehow the boat's standby-generator and steam turbine were having a wiring conflict.
Many guests do not realize that the Liberty Belle Riverboat is an actual steamboat. The boiler burns diesel #2 to boil the water, to produce the steam, which is used to power both the steam engine and the steam turbine which produces electricity for the boat.

🤷‍♂️About Timekeeper102: I am a former Walt Disney World cast member and opening manager for Shanghai Disneyland. I share stories and insights from my 13 years world at Disney Parks. From Jungle Cruise Skipper to Riverboat Captain, trainer to show observationist. You'll enjoy anecdotes about working at the park, backstage trivia as well as insight as to how theme parks operate. So that's how I became a theme park expert, again expert might not be the exact right word, more expert-ish. Anyway, I've got to go. Look out for the clickbait! Kidding. I'm a kidder. Buh-bye now.

I got close to a low-water flame out once... also I did indeed once lose the rim lights on the boat. Also burnt my forearm on the engine once. Working the Riverboat was my favorite job ever, such peace and seclusion on the back stretch. It didn't make sense for me to stay but I really wish it had.

You are absolutely right about the seclusion and peace, especially on the back end of the river. It was also my favorite role at Disney. Almost everyone I talk to who worked the boat all agree if we could really make a living from it, we'd just stay at the boat the rest of our lives. BTW, I am a huge fan of your work. Thanks for stopping by.

Yes. It is. Although, according to the OG we called it an underwater guiderail.

If you think about it, he has a point. Just because it’s on a track, doesn’t mean you wouldn’t think the boat could crash since it’s so pitch black and can’t see a thing
