Does anyone know what specifics they ask on the test for an electronic control technician. I have been one for 21 years and now they want me to take a test.

+Rod Alvarez What industry do you work in? Not that it makes a difference for the answer I will give. If the test is a generic test that the employer is getting from a certification testing organization, Then good luck. It may have little to do with your real world job. Hopefully they will give you access to some type of prep material. If it is written locally, then it may be easier. I say maybe because if your job is like my former job as a Systems Tech for a power utility, then your area of responsibility can be so broad that it would be difficult to do well on a test written by another technician that concentrates in the area that he is writing questions on. I developed test questions for my area of expertise, SCADA. You have to be very careful when writing tests to be fair. What I am trying to say is that you could ask questions of a fully qualified coworker that would trip them up, and the same would be true of the reverse situation. I think a test should be written so that a qualified Tech has a good chance of knowing the answer, but I'm sure others see it different. Like where I worked for 25 years, a control tech would be expected to know most ANSI/IEEE Standard Device Numbers off the top of their head because they look at drawings utilizing these device numbers all day. I'm not sure asking a control technician off the street what a 86T is would be a fair question, but at the utility I worked, every control tech would snap the answer off. Even though many of them have tested, and all of them are capable of testing a 68 relay, because it is much less common, some of them might have to look it up to know it is an out of step relay. These are normally only used at utility inter-ties, so are much less common. I guess I am saying in highly technical jobs, you need to be careful with testing not to ask unreasonable questions, and what is reasonable to the test writer, can be pretty messed up.

How was your test? I'm from NY too. I applied for a different position in MTA and my test is some day in November. I just wonder how it is there, difficult or not.

the (2) best places today to learn how to be an electronics tech are the military or a tech school with are drying up on a daily basis it seems like. If it is the military it would be the ( NAVY or AIR FORCE and AIR NATIONAL GUARD ) A 1 or 2 yr tech school will give you more hands on experience than say a 2 or 4 yr college. The rapid rate that technology changes these days caters more towards a 1 or 2 yr program. Some community colleges offer 2 yr associate degrees which will help get your foot in the door of most technician jobs.
