I have to admit - anyone who knows me know that I have a Johnny Cash obsession! Marty was one of Johnny's best friends and one of the absolute people to see Johnny alive. Marty has made it his life's work to preserve and honor the history of country music. He just donated 20,000 items to the Country Music Hall of Fame. Yes, you read that correctly 20,000.
Marty is not only an amazing musician and song writer but is also a very knowledgeable music historian well informed in bluegrass, country and Native American music. He’s been around as a performer since his early teens. He’s is well worth a deeper dive.
True country lovers know Marty Stuart is multi-talented and really respected by his peers. His talents lie way beyond stage performance, but his mandolin is what draws me to him. Just an incredible talent....and don't get me started on Vince Gill.
I am so glad that I found you. You are one of the best podcasters out there. I start and give them a chance but usually delete after a month. You are definitely a down to earth guy. Thank you ❤🎉
Got into Marty Stuart earlier this year, then saw him live with Chris Stapleton in October - in just those few months became one of my favourite country artists. Some incredible songs!
The whiskey ain’t workin anymore, Tempted, Little Things, Burn Me Down, good songs. He also has some with Travis Tritt. Always wondered why he didn’t keep on producing new music. Great writer, musician, singer and entertainer.
Marty Stuart was a child prodigy. He also had his own TV show at one time. I've seen him in concert and was lucky to sit in the front row next to Lester Flatt's wife which allowed me a few minutes to chat with Marty. I love his music.
Marty Stuart is well worth researching. He toured with Flatt and Scruggs when he was just a yooungster who needed his parents’ permission. His talent is unbelievable. He is a country and bluegrass purist and is quite the country music historian. I think he’s the most talented and generous musician in the US. As others have mentioned, his band The Fabulous Superlatives are outstanding. Definitely check out Marty and his band.
I first saw Marty Stuart when he was a teenager with Flatt & Scruggs at Lake Norman Musical Hall. I was 11 or 12 at the time. I followed him his entire career. Saw him in early 2023 and he is still awesome.
I saw Marty Stuart perform when he just started out with Lester Flatt at just 14. He recently opened a music museum in his hometown of Philadelphia, Ms. That’s also home to Hardy, one of your faves.
Since you’re beginning to really get into country music, you should check out Ken Burns series he did on country music. It was on PBS and it’s really good. I think Marty Stuart was in it quite a bit as a narrative storyteller. It’s an amazing history of country music.
Marty has been giging professionally since he was ten years old. He played with giants like Lester Flatt and Johnny Cash. His band The Fabulous Superlatives is excellent. His first wife was Johnny Cash’s daughter Cindy. He has been Married to second wife singer Connie Smith for nearly 30 years. She was a successful professional singer when he was still a child.
Vince and Marty met when they were teenagers, playing in bluegrass bands. These guys were destined to do what they do, from a young age. Definitely check out more Marty.
The third gentleman is Harry Stinson, session drummer and vocalist. He was Martys drummer in his band the Fabulous Superlatives. This is mountain musics/blue grass.
Watched Marty's show on RFD , with his wife Connie Smith, and the Superlatives. Cousin Kenny (guitar), Hansom Harry Stenson (drums) and Apostle Paul Martin (bass). Watch Marty, Vince and Harry playing on the video Earl Scruggs and Friends "Foggy Mountain breakdown. with a lot of other talented Players.
One of my favorite songs when I was a child was Hillybilly Rock by Marty. Burn Me Down, Little Things, Tempted were all from the same era and were bigger radio success. But Marty is still touring and releasing music.
Marty has SO wonderfully kept bluegrass alive, and features so many great artists. YES! Check out more Marty! Oh, and Marty is a consummate musician - the mic was a specific choice....
Marty Stuart started as a studio musician at the Grand Ol’ Opry in his Teens!!! Seb, you would dig the sound of….The No Hats Tour - Travis Tritt & Marty Stuart’s very successful collab tour and album.
He throws a big get together every year in Nashville, its called a Marty Party !! Toured with Travis Tritt, it was called the No Hats Tour. ( they both love their hair too much to wear a hat 😂)
Don't overlook the great Kenny Vaughan playing guitar behind Marty. He's been with Marty for many years and if you watch him playing electric guitar, especially trading solos with Marty, you will realize the man is legendary. Kenny is the quiet background hero, similar to how the legend Pete Anderson was behind Dwight Yoakam.
Marty has held to his roots. Chris Scruggs, however, is the grandson of the late Earl Scruggs. Probably knows the history of Nashville and Country music better than anyone.
Thanks! Check out 'Sittin on top of the World' by Jimmy Martin and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. It's a bangin' blue grass number you'll love! The live version audio isn't nearly as good as the studio cut.
This is Bluegrass. I think Rank Stranger was originally made popular by the Stanley Brothers. If you don't know Ralph Stanley, he became famous in his later years on the sound track of the movie O Brother Where Art Thou?
A great old song by one of the great's in bluegrass music the great Dr Ralph Stanley, love bluegrass music, Marty Stuart, is a revered musician, singer, and songwriter try listening to Marty Stuart and Travis Tritt, sing "THIS ONE HURT A LONG,LONG TIME" a great traditional sounding country song. Enjoy
When he says they've moved on, it's a euphemism for death. They've all died, which is why he's hoping to meet them by the Crystal Sea, which is a Scriptural reference to Heaven.
Ralph and Carter Stanley aka the Stanley Brothers were some of the earliest groups in Bluegrass. Carter died pretty early but Ralph continued on into his late 70's early 80's . He was a master of the old time banjo or clawhammer, and a style i call Crakling banjo or Stanley Style which is completely different than the Roling banjo or 3 finger roll style best known as Scrugfs style named after the originator Earl Scruggs. Earl was the second half of the group Flatts and Scruggs and the Foggy Mountain boys which is where Marty Stewart got his start much like Ricky Skaggs got his start with Bill Monroe and the Blugrass Boys. Ricky and Marty both are master musicians of the guitar mandolin and fiddle and other instruments. I told my son this and I'll tell you, the best of the best of Guitar players can be found rooted in Bluegrass. Rock and Metal guitarists are great, dont get me wrong but few can pick up an acoustic guitar and pick out a song at the skill level of a Bluegrass guitarist. But many Bluegrass guitarists can and do play rock and other genres. Vince Gill is a prime example.
Here is a good one to check out if you haven’t already it is a Bluegrass tune instrumental called Foggy Mountain breakdown done by Earl Scruggs and friends if you look close you will Vince Gil, Marty Stewart and a very special guess playing the Banjo none other than Steve Martin
If you don’t know Marty then you don’t know country, but I watch Marty to see Kenny Vaughn play,my all time trio of guitar players would be Kenny,Vince,And Merle at the same time, maybe Jamey Johnson in there somewhere, while this song is pure blue grass, anyone of those three could and have brought down the house with their hard driving country rock a billy beat. Check out Marty with the mavericks (your cheating heart) if you want to see Marty jam hard.
Marty had a half hour TV show named the Marty Stuart Show..go watch some of it... you will gain huge country music history lessons... Also Google why he wears scarfs...
See if u can find anything by the Neon Valley Boys they did blue grass tunes that where about life in the northeast when time were Hard. They did one about latch key kids and how ma and pa would come home form factory, Avery touching tune. It has been to many yr to remember any more. I can almost get the words and tune but they have gone with age. When blue grass does life and stays away form beliefs it is one of the best for story telling.
That’s a really good version of ranked strangers, but you should really check out the Ricky Skaggs version on his album Bluegrass Rules.. at least I think that’s the album it’s on. Lol but I know Ricky Skaggs does a killer version of it.
You need to go down the Marty Stuart rabbit hole. He started playing on stage at a very young age…..like 12 maybe? He can absolutely own bluegrass, genuine country…not pop/country, and Rockabilly. Do yourself a favor and enlarge your music knowledge. Marty is a great person to learn about.
Marty Stuart -- outstanding musician/singer. At 15 yrs of age he was playing with Flatt & Scruggs on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry
He was also Johnny's son in law for a while. I think his wife was Cindy.
Marty Stuart and his band The fabulous superlatives. Awesomeness!

Marty Stuart was a child prodigy. He also had his own TV show at one time. I've seen him in concert and was lucky to sit in the front row next to Lester Flatt's wife which allowed me a few minutes to chat with Marty. I love his music.

This is often sung without any music...Playing major chords and singing minors...
By the way, Marty has a great song called Going Going Gone. Good lyrics (kinda sad), and lots of twangy guitar and steel guitar licks.
