I am a woman married to a woman. I have watched the first few minutes of this video, and I don't like how it presents rumor as fact. Yes, gay people have always existed! I think Bill Clinton should get more credit than he was given in this video. While DADT did not turn out to be very helpful to gays in the military, he was seeking a policy that allowed gays to serve, but that was the best he could get, given all the pushback he had to contend with. He spent a lot of political capital on that cause very early in his presidency. And despite the end result being less than ideal, it did get the topic out in the open much more. That led to a lot of gay characters in television shows and eventually much more acceptance overall.
I agree. The first thing Clinton tried to do as president was allow gay people to serve openly in the military. Republicans lost their shit, and ultimately "Don't Ask Don't Tell" was proposed as a compromise. I find it weird how people leave out that part of the story. To hear some people tell it, gay people were allowed to serve openly before Clinton, and he came with a policy that made them go back into the closet. That's not what happened! He tried to allow gay people to serve openly, the right wing completely freaked out, and he agreed to a compromise that was at least an improvement for gay people. At least gay people were no longer being investigated and prosecuted in the military.
I wish there were sources or more details. Not because I don't believe you, there have always been LGBTQ+ people. It's just that I would love to have solid sources to hurl at bigots, and for the rumor based ones I want to know how rumored and how good are the rumors.
Yea, especially Grant. I would at least describe him as bisexual because he LITERALLY married his wife (a slave holding southerner) when his entire family were abolitionists! Claiming Grant was gay because people made rumors about him being gay while he was wildly hated/thought up as corrupt (meaning rumors would be spread to further ruin his reputation)is so weird. Wouldn’t his sexuality also come up during his MILITARY career where he was far away from his wife for years?????
Yeah, a good context to understand how the rumour was created, if we can know how it was created (not actually a specific person, but if it was a rival, if it was after their deaths...)

It was normal to say stuff like "my dear so and so, I can't wait to see you, the days without you made me feel lonely bla bla bla" - they expressed their emotions differently back then.
He might have had a woman because you had to in order to have any power back then. But he was romantically attracted to women and sexually attracted to men. His letters included sexual attraction. Not things like “I miss you” but things like “I cannot wait to feel the pulse in your c*ck again”. They were very explicit letters.

None of this will be taken seriously by most people without visible historical documentation. It needs to be clear, not simply plausible. Historically, being gay is documented since ancient times.

As a Dutch man I think the is list a little bit tricky. I believe that even at this time an open agnostic or atheist candidate would not have a chance. So they must always find a balance to get the (ultra ?) religious vote. I think as most readers wil remember that we in The Netherlands had the first gay marriage in the world. I could not agree more with the top picks from worst to best. For some reason, people don't pay attention to how insane Reagan was, at least where I come from. Also, I was never a huge Truman fan for various other reasons, but his anti-gay sentiment surprised me because I didn't think he would have been the type to care about that. Mr. Beat's video is a good insight into his fairly average life before becoming president, especially his struggle in school. Amazing video yet again!
Don't know if I would say Reagan was insane. I do agree that the way he handled gay issues was terrible but I think his presidency over all was a B in my humble opinion. Trump... Yeah F 😅 look maybe D but F for now
As a young man, Truman was more bookish than into sports. He was a self-taught history scholar. I think that Truman's views were also influenced by the zeitgeist of the times. In the post-war era the red scare took hold over politics and government, and connections that could be seen as potentially compromising (ie, possibly sharing US secrets with a potential spy) became fodder for personal and professional attacks in which people were persecuted and lost their livelihoods. Truman adopted the anti-communist stance of the times, which continued through the Reagan and Bush 1 presidencies.
Vance has been so racist that he believes Irish Americans and Italian Americans are the cause of high crime. If you have heritage in either of those, that could be useful.
But, again limiting a vote to one aspect leaves open other aspects they will bring and a disaster for the collective society. We are currently experiencing this example.
some people are afraid to change. what they believed in their entire life is essentially, if not literally, the foundation to their self. if that's taken away, their sense of self falls down like a house of cards rather than a house of bricks. it's psychological death, or death of the ego. if they're that far gone, i recommend no contact, but... do what you think it's best.
0:54 There is no historical evidence to suggest that George Washington was gay. His personal and professional life, as documented in historical records, indicates that he had relationships with women, most notably his marriage to Martha Custis Washington. Washington’s letters and documents do not provide any indication of romantic or sexual relationships with men. Speculation about the sexual orientation of historical figures often arises from modern interpretations or desires to re-examine history through contemporary lenses. However, it is essential to rely on credible historical evidence when discussing figures like Washington, and there is no substantiated basis for claiming he was gay.
There are several inaccuracies here but one of the biggest mistakes I caught was saying that Grover Cleveland’s wife Rose was a lesbian. Rose was his actually his sister and merely acted as First Lady until he married Frances Folsom later in his first term.
This needs another line about Don't Aak Don't tell. It wasn't intended to be an anti gay law. It was intended to be a compromise law that would allow gay people to serve in the military as long as they didn't tell anyone.

@@OKBoomer2k before don’t ask, don’t tell, gay people were frequently kicked out of the military for being gay. I'm gay but the scoring of pre-1900 presidents is sketchy at best. Lots of supposition there, and outright inaccuracies (Rose Cleveland was Grover's sister, not wife - she was First Lady while he was unmarried). Passionate letters to other men aren't the smoking gun you think - erudition and eloquence were more valued back then, so their language seems more flowery to us today. Still, enjoyable video! Clinton, Obama and Biden have been our best allies, and soon-to-be-President Harris will be EVEN better!!
There's a pretty wide chasm between "was rumored to be" and " was LGBTQ". If you don't have more to go on than rumors you should probably leave the conclusion a little less dogmatic. I'm not saying that any of these are impossible; the Buchanan story is the most well documented. Most of the others require interpretation of cultural features from the past that aren't understood fully due to their chronological distance. Which might explain why so many of the examples given are among the earliest presidents and so few are among the recent presidents. Just mathematically there are unlikely to be so many examples (30%ish). Even today with much more lax moral imperatives the percentage of LGBTQ persons is below 10% so how could such a high percentage of LGBTQ persons reach that office especially when that being the case would often have been a detriment to a candidate's election. Buchanan's tenure in office was hampered by the rumors; is it likely that so many of the most successful presidencies would have succeeded in a time when their sexual identities would have been even more difficult to maintain than they would currently.
This is a cynical view, but the only reason LGBTQIA+ rights are protected and expanded is because it's now politically expedient to do so. Maybe not yet for the trans community, but in the years to come when public opinion changes for them too.
... which is because sexual minorities banded together and gained enough social presence and power to be seen as a force to be reckoned with. That was, and is, one of the fundamental points of pride parades. This is why I support ALL minorities banding together... racial minorities, sexual minorities, women... to combine all our power against the bigotry and oppression of christians and conservatives. Politicians respond to power, so minorities need to link together.
As a GenXer in school then the only one we ever heard about was James Buchanan. It was never really said it but it was said. I love his quote though as he was passing Lincoln in the White House. "If you sir, are as happy to be taking my job as I am to be leaving it, then you are the happiest man in the world." How many times in my life have I thought of that, lol. ehhhbrrrm.
Yeah, he was a lousy and incredibly corrupt guy, only using his position to get his friends into higher positions in the government and doing little to nothing to stop the Civil War from happening. In fact, he may have even accelerated its progress.
Remember that while Don't Ask, Don't Tell was not optimal, before this was signed into law any LGBTQ person serving could be asked about their sexual orientation and discharged for it. This law prevented the question which basically stopped LGBTQ discharges. While it seems antiquated now, it was a step forward at the time based on a compromise.
One point to add on Reagan: he appointed Justices Anthony Kennedy and Sandra Day O’Connor to the U.S. Supreme Court. Justice Kennedy wrote all of the gay rights decisions starting in the 90s and Justice O’Connor provided the crucial fifth vote in Evans v. Romer and Lawrence v Texas. Even though Justice Scalia was on the opposite side for most of the gay rights cases, he was the author of the opinion that recognized that same-sex sexual harassment was sex discrimination under Title Vi.

I consider him awful not even specifically because of his terrible lgbtq record but I think he's one of the most overrated presidents of all time. His Reaganomics of reducing taxes for the rich and expecting it to trickle down to everybody else is one of the main reasons why there is such a massive income inequality gap today.
@Sly88Frye - You're Spot On. He shrank Federal spending on our society by cutting Welfare, Disability Help, stopped Affordable Public Housing, Education - Anything meant for people was shriveled. He dropped Tax Rates for the Rich. With an economy in recession he inherited from Nixon & Vietnam War, he had to borrow money from the banks at high interest to pay for his tax cuts shortfalls. Because ALL People needed Federal Government service, regardless of income. The Defense Budget Ballooned, too. It is HOW the Federal Budget Pie is Sliced that makes Winners & Losers. Reagan was a recipient of FDR Programs & was a SAG-AFTRA Union President, which helped him in his Hollywood/Radio/TV career. When he got into office, Reagan waged war on Unions - re sacking Air Traffic Controllers for wanting better work conditions & higher wages. He essentially used the FAILED economic subtefuge of Trickle Down Theory. His policies shrank the middle class - from top to down and on both sides. Where did you get that information about JFK? You also missed an important aspect - JFK's closest personal friend was a guy named Lem Billings. They met at prep school and during their time there, Billings told JFK that he was gay. JFK said he wasn't, but nevertheless they remained very close friends for the rest of JFK's life.

I'd love to use this video to show my family they shouldn't vote for Trump, but they're homophobic so it wouldnt do much
Vance has been so racist that he believes Irish Americans and Italian Americans are the cause of high crime. If you have heritage in either of those, that could be useful.

What it was was a baby step towards acceptance, but in practice sent the message that it was still wrong. It wasn’t until Obama that being gay in the military was acceptable at all and would not be a reason for kicking you out.
@@OKBoomer2k Yes. They are still gay, they just can't really express it. And while yes, it is pretty messed up, at least they were not executed or castrated instead.
This being considered a solution is problematic
I'm gay but the scoring of pre-1900 presidents is sketchy at best. Lots of supposition there, and outright inaccuracies (Rose Cleveland was Grover's sister, not wife - she was First Lady while he was unmarried). Passionate letters to other men aren't the smoking gun you think - erudition and eloquence were more valued back then, so their language seems more flowery to us today. Still, enjoyable video! Clinton, Obama and Biden have been our best allies, and soon-to-be-President Harris will be EVEN better!!
@@imperialmotoring3789 because she isn’t🤦♀️
Right, just read the Federalist papers.
why did jfk only get a 1? he was probably the first president to openly support the idea of gay marriage, and his best friend was gay
@Aeroldoth3 I think you need to realize there are democrats that don't agree with the gay lifestyle.
As a GenXer in school then the only one we ever heard about was James Buchanan. It was never really said it but it was said.
I love his quote though as he was passing Lincoln in the White House. "If you sir, are as happy to be taking my job as I am to be leaving it, then you are the happiest man in the world."
How many times in my life have I thought of that, lol.
There hasn’t been any president really embraced the gay community. Most of them say they approve of LGBTQ because that is what you want to hear.

Correction: Rose Cleveland was Grover Cleveland's _sister,_ not his wife. Grover was unmarried when he took office, so Rose filled in as "Acting First Lady" until Grover married Frances Folsom in 1886. Perfectly understandable for you to make that mistake, though-"acting first lady" and "first lady" can be easy to confuse!
Ronald Reagan was by far the worst on gay rights! Obama and Biden so far the most LGBT supportive until Kamala Harris is elected in November!

The issue is that back then the noun gay hadn't been invented yet. The act of two men being in a relationship was, but it wasn't something to make it a core identity. This only happened after German psychologist invented it. And the more restrictive the upbringing, the more being gay became a core identity. Today, liberal and non-sexist parents care less about their children's gender and preference. Therefore, being gay will become less of an issue and will disappear as a core identity.
They were called "sodomites" back in the day...not a flattering word to say the least.

Yeah, you're completely wrong on George Washington being gay.
There is no historical evidence that I can find that proves that he was gay. All I can prove is that he had gay generals in the Army and he didn't care.
There is historical evidence for James Buchanan because we have literally recovered many letters pertaining to his same-sex relationship with his boyfriend. If y'all know who the name of this person is, y'all can put it down here.

This video just showed up in my recommendations and I could not help but click on it because presidents and their records on lgbtq is an extremely interesting subject I didn't realize I wanted to know about.
Honestly I think it's actually pretty heartwarming that some of the early presidents may have been progressive in their stance on LGBTQ. I also am happy to see that Ronald Reagan is so awful. I consider him awful not even specifically because of his terrible lgbtq record but I think he's one of the most overrated presidents of all time. His Reaganomics of reducing taxes for the rich and expecting it to trickle down to everybody else is one of the main reasons why there is such a massive income inequality gap today.
the phrase it all started with Reagan exists for a reason, university prices and student loans, the AIDS crisis, Reaganomics, militarized police, etc
We're still dealing with his economic damage, I believe. Takes years - generations to grow a country.

2. Jimmy Carter
3. James Madison

From my research, George Washington wasn't gay and the only love letter that is publicly known from him is relating to his wife Martha. If he was LGBTQ+, he'd have needed to be bi or pan as there is no reason to question his love for his wife even considering the time period.
He was romantically attracted to his wife but sexually attracted to men. And there are dozens of love letters we talk about in our dedicated episode linked in the description.

So close in fact, that Billings had his own room at the White House. JFK's father Joe Kennedy Sr., said Billings was like a son and a member of the family. They all knew he was gay.
