We met him that night and ended staying for two or three hours before exiting the back door to Carnegie with him. He and his wife are the two coolest, most in touch with their spirituality, and kindest people I've ever met. Dream come true.
Jon Faddis was one of the few trumpet players who dared to follow the Dizzy Gillespie school of trumpet playing. Those high notes and rippling arpeggios are a Dizzy staple. When Dizzy heard this solo he must have checked himself to see if he were somehow still playing.
Still can't get over the utter completeness of this solo and how it formed a truly unique moment in Jazz history when the pupil (Faddis) took centre stage while the master (Dizzy) standing back, must have been bursting with pride.
This blows me away. Every single note is big, clean and full of carefully crafted nuances. High register just screams yet stays relaxed. He feels like he can just do anything he wants.
Guys I know this story is stupid hard to believe, but roll with me. Basically fell in love with Jon the day I started playing trumpet and saw this video. In April, Conor, a friend of mine who plays saxophone in my high school's band and I went to New York to see him in Zankel Hall. We went that night, I think it was the 27th to see him and met a man Jorge (holding the last name for it seems appropriate to do so) who sat next to my mom, who went with us, and gave her his backstage passes.
This video made me want to become a musician and trumpet player. Still try to get create this sound every single day when I pick up the horn in the morning.
@@tcideneb1 You're a fucking dick man, if someone puts in enough time it's never wasted. In a few years of hard practice anyone could reach this level of play including you. Just cause you gave up on yourself doesn't mean you should go encouraging others to as well.
Faddis has amazing embouchure. notice how relaxed his lips are as he hits a HIGH g!! and throughout the FULL range of the instrument. no pressure! amazing execution!!!
I've stop by to listen to this song so many times. Get home, have a shower, make my coffee, turn my a/c and listen to this fantastic interpretation by faddis.
Jon Faddis play so effortlessly, he makes it look easy, but I know that comes with years of passion and practice. Excellent Playing, I hope someday to play as well! Great Music Awesome Playin' DolphinMan8
I'm on fire. I'm in tears. Such incredible fire executed under amazing control. This shows that Mr. Faddis has great passion and discipline. He's also very handsome! How sincere and honest he looks! Just wonderful to listen to him and look at him. Thank you!!!
I first met Jon when he joined us on Lionel Hampton's band in 1971. He had just turned 18 and everyone recognized his great talent immediately. I still proudly call him my friend. Thom Gambino
Hard to believe this was 1978, looks and sounds soooo fresh! I own the video now after seeing this on youtube. I give you as much credit for posting this as i do to the musicians in this video. THANK YOU!
i keep coming back for more of this and each time its better..knockout is the only thing to say.that double up moment makes me yell out..that moment is one of the greatest in jazz history in my opinion and jazztrumpet111195 is spot on. once again many thanks andiroo for this .it is a gem..
this leaves me speechless .what a performance.when jon faddis doubles up i think its one of the most exciting things ive heard in jazz.like a coltrane or parker moment fantastic many thanks
this is truly a classy song. Just watching the guy walk around in the first few seconds makes it so classy. I truly enjoy this song every time i listen. everything ranging from the amazing trumpet player to the amazing bass line makes this song so worth it every time
I think Trumpet sounds like heaven. Divine and pure and eternally happy. Saxophone sounds earthly to me. Haha. Excuse my English. I'm a Korean girl who loves the trumpet sound, and I worship Dizzy Gillespie with my heart. :)
increible!!!control, eficiencia, concentracion y pasion. Impresiona como termina tan relajado despues de una interpretacion tan intensa. Gracias mr.Faddis
I had this performance on vinyl when it first came out. I wore that record out (or, rather, that cut) trying to imagine myself playing it. I was 17 at the time.
I keep coming back to this awesome piece of music.when I first heard it it left me speechless and it still does this is one of THE great moments in jazz.many many thanks.
Man, I've always loved the tone of the trumpet, especially when it comes from someone with this guys skill. I wish I could play half as good as this guy
Im 16, polish-british, i mostly listen to underground rap, oldschool hiphop, rnb but funk, soul and jazz were always my weaknesses ;D just love the trumpet and the sax with the piano.. i just wish that there were more hiphop songs based on jazz
J.F.'s horn is a Schilke B6L same model the late Bill Chase played on. Mouthpiece a custom job, no doubt made by Scott Laskey. Makes no difference though this guy could pick up a Coke bottle and make it sing.
If there was anyone that Diz passed the torch to, it was Faddis. Diz must have shit his pants the first time he heard Jon play like this. Must have brought back some great memories of his youth.
damn hes good im speechless, and that bell being turned up like that was no mistake i guess he wanted it like that for some reason but thats a beautiful tune i could listen to it all day just beautiful man just beautiful=}UR THE BEST JON FADDIS!!
He's using the same model of trumpet that Dizzy Gallespie originated. It's called the Sextet 77. Originally, the bend was a manufracturing mistake, but Gallespie like the sound it created, so he left as is and it became synonomous with Gallespie. There's also a story the Gallespie saw another musician in Europe with this style of trumpet and liked the way it sounded, so he adopted that style of trumpet.
In response to the guys who were asking about Jon's trumpet in this video, he's playing a Schilke B6L ("L" meaning a tunable bell). In the early 80's Jon switched to a Schilke S42-JF which was designed specifically for him and still plays that horn to this day.
We met him that night and ended staying for two or three hours before exiting the back door to Carnegie with him. He and his wife are the two coolest, most in touch with their spirituality, and kindest people I've ever met. Dream come true.

Fantastic, Faddis showing all his tone and talents, beyond the normal high flying in the top notes. 5 stars for a genius.
The clarity he has in the upper register is unbelievable. That's what makes him one of my all-time favorites.
One of the greatest trumpeters of all time
This blows me away. Every single note is big, clean and full of carefully crafted nuances. High register just screams yet stays relaxed. He feels like he can just do anything he wants.
His work in the 1977 movie 'The Gauntlet' is tremendous too, it has a great score by Jerry Fielding and a pretty cool plot, if you haven't seen it.

WOW!!! That is one of the most incredble performances I ever heard in my life!!!
This video made me want to become a musician and trumpet player.

I went and saw Faddis last year at CU. He was incredible. I'll never forget that experience as an aspiring jazz trumpeter.
Jon Faddis play so effortlessly, he makes it look easy, but I know that comes with years of passion and practice.

Never understood people that prefer Sax over Trumpet. Trumpet sound is so magical!
I agree, it's more alive and vibrant
Becuse learn to play trumpet very very hard. Sax is more easily.. :'D Greetings From Hungary ( Jazz Trumpet player:3 )
I think Trumpet sounds like heaven. Divine and pure and eternally happy. Saxophone sounds earthly to me. Haha. Excuse my English. I'm a Korean girl who loves the trumpet sound, and I worship Dizzy Gillespie with my heart. :)

Exactly! On a very soft, and slow, song too. A true master.

It's sunday. The best day to listen to this and i always do.
Just met this guy yesterday... He sure is something else.
première audition de Jon Faddis pour moi, excellente impression y compris dans le suraigu, registre médium parfait, merci.
The name of the tune is ,"Heres that Rainy day".It's a nice tune and Jon is Great. He does make it look simple.
I hear this video like at least once a month and this vid just does something to me, all trumpet players should understand
Jon Faddis plays so much high notes that he has his own clef, the Faddis Clef. Not only that, but his own atmosphere....the Faddisphere.
I noticed this mans trumpet work when i saw the Clint Eastwood movie The Gauntlet. Great studio work by this pure screamer!!!
Smooth and pleasant to the ears.
Beautiful music
I love how he shows off those high notes and goes back to playing regular. It makes me laugh every time I hear it.
This rendition quickly became my favorite.
Almost 10 years listening to this
Ho la pelle d'oca, indescrivibile bellezza
i love this song.

2:09 THIS TUNE IS VERY AWESOME

Yeah I noticed how smooth of a sound it made!!
The trumpet really conducts the jazz music beyond the times!! Other instruments are simply the frame to him!!!

I am a metalhead but I have to say. I could listen to Jazz all day!
This dude is Fantastic

this is so great. I only wish...
If there was anyone that Diz passed the torch to, it was Faddis. Diz must have shit his pants the first time he heard Jon play like this. Must have brought back some great memories of his youth.
