Great video. I love the ending. Reminds me of the story of the captain that declared he knew every sandbar in these waters and as the boat runs aground he says" There is one of them now."
In high winds like that a helmsman is constantly adjusting the trim of the boat and sails relative to the true wind to maintain a straight line, and maintain optimal pressure on the sails so that the wind isn't steering the boat for you. When the boat is heeling hard the wind begins to exert more force on the tiller (you see how he's hauling hard on the wheel when the boat is heeled?... then releasing and letting the boat stand more upright to get the sails back in the higher wind?) Its an art.
Did they lose the captain on the way or did he do too much coke ? First part is him not sleeping for couple of days and lifting sails and second part bunch of other people coke up and party but the captain is nowhere in sight.
Lol, I think they didn't notice him falling overboard at some point of this trans Atlantic party cruise, its hard to notice these things over the sound of how important these people find themselves.
I think flying a spaceship would be, but we'd need a few new pieces of tech like anti-aging, faster engines, or stasis chambers. If we invent anti-aging today we can all live to see that reality.
Thanks for the video, it keeps me inspired with my schooling and goals. Its mass nice to see young people, both women and men working on the ship together. I loved seeing the boredom and play, the music and focus. My questions: When you're in a swell do you use your body as a counter balance, is it effective? (I've never sailed with more then 2 other people) Did you catch fish? Would you rather race or take your time. If take your time, how long would you expect it to take in such a ship? -tara
Haha I can only answer one question but on a boat this large, the human weight means next to nothing. They have a keel (heavy weight below the water line) that probably weighs a few tons that provides all the counterbalance they need
There is a speck on the lens at about @11:30(1/3rd of the way down from the top left corner to the bottom right corner) and I kept trying to clean it off my screen!
Acoustic guitar sounds great. Agree with the sleep thing. #1 eat right #2 sleep. You're the most important piece of equipment on the boat. Take care of it.
Nice boat and a lively crew. 2 questions. 1) Why the skipper had to tag of war with the steering in order to steer the boat? 2) It looked like the boat wasn't turining when the skipper was turining the wheel. is it just my impression?
Hmmm...He was actually probably steering to a true wind angle to keep the sails with the same aspect (or trim) to the wind.Bear away in the gusts to ride it out, head up in the lulls,etc...Its faster and easier to trim for a certain angle and then just steer to compensate.Unless your actually heading for a mark, then you need to constantly trim and keep the helm steering a straight course.
A different kind of race. Usually we are weighing our bags trying to make lowest weight possible, dropping to lowest bodyfat possible, and cutting toothbrushes in half to find savings. Looks like a nice way to race!
Two of the girls (not that hard to spot witch ones) are the owner and a friend. But the rest were all world class sailors. But of course this race is more of a cruice than an actual race
Great video guys you made it look so easy! Im just learning to sail and hope I get an opportunity to crew a boat like this one day. Gorgeous boat my favorite builder.
It's serious, grumpy. 5 DECEMBER 2011 - British Virgin Gorda - at 15:30 local time, Indio, a 100 foot Wally crossed the finish line in the YCCS Transatlantic Maxi Yacht Cup, taking first place among the sloops in the race and second place overall. With a time of 11 days, 6 hours and 30 minutes.
1.7 times the square root of the waterline length gives you the maximum speed for a displacement hull. In other words, a longer boat is faster. :-) (Assuming your sailors know what they are doing and the boat is rigged properly, which if you are racing across the Atlantic... it had better be.) :-)
Dave Hamburger To exceed the hull speed, the boat must climb over its own bow wave. That is how "planing" occurs. Essentially, your waterline must be shorter than the boat's bow wave. You can imagine how fast a 100' boat would need to be going to have that happen :-)
Nicely done... hey, there's no dishonor running aground when you have a long fin keel, and it's fun hanging out on the boom... what's the draft on Indio?
When you fall off that boat. By the time it's turned around to try and find you, you will be gone. I'm a absolutely shocked at all of you. Can someone explain to me why there are no life jackets on?

One little glass bottle, oh come on. Ships, fishermen, entire countries dump hundreds of tons of plastic and crap into it every day. Message in a bottle is a tradition and it's either going to float or sink but it's not going to harm anyone or anything. Sure it didn't look good but your car does more damage to the planet in an hour, everything around you that you buy and use is mostly non-biodegradable and can harm animals and the planet - a little glass bottle is the least of our worries. just past the intro and the "captain" openly acknowledges that he's only slept 4 hours in 2 days at the beginning of a transat?! i'm thinking what kind of plonker would allow such a complete fool to run such an impressive yacht; and then we meet the owner - nice hat! not one person is wearing an inflatable life-ring, and no safety lines on the deck on a boat that does 20-25 knots. in the end they run aground in the bvi - the easiest sailing grounds in the entire world. "we made our money the old fashioned way - WE INHERITED IT! (or quite possibly divorced our way into it)". wow just wow.
Another boring american yacht's atlantic crossing... I want to see it in a stormy weather, not in a flat sea !!
Then go try and film your own crossing in stormy weather and puy your own life in peril.
That was joke... >< . Learn humor...
Glider FS Hmm, okay i may have been a bit quick on the defensive. Sorry my bad :3
No problem ! :p
+Glider FS The Owner of the Yacht is Italian.
