My mom worked at Kmart and she would get to buy the subs at like 90% off at the end of her shift when the store was closing. We’d have them at least once a week. When I started driving, I’d visit my mom on her dinner break and we’d eat in the cafe. I loved the warm apple dumplings. I never thought back then that I’d really miss those days. 💔
Kmart sandwiches were so good. And back in the 70s, their strawberry shortcake was awesome. You don’t realize how much you miss these things until they’re gone 😢
When I was pregnant I was craving these sandwiches and popcorn. I liked Kmart layaway too. My mother would get me everything I wanted and pay on it, and just before Christmas pay it off and take it home and wrap everything up and put it under the tree. Life is so hard now and different. Thanks for this recipe!
When I was a kid, Kmart was the only place I knew of where you could get frozen Cokes! Fond memories of shopping Kmart with my family! Great video, Sara!
She’s not cooking gourmet dishes or making anything fancy or something we don’t know about. At this point she’s just making frozen food stuff like wrapped 7 eleven sandwiches and what not. Sadly her subs will go down. Many are finding it dull. The old Sarah and her videos were The best. It’s all going downhill in terms of quality sadly. I was watching and then it clicked. I was like why am I watching someone make a sandwich again?
Same here, our Super Kmart had a restaurant called the Islander Cafe. They served breakfast and lunch, had pretty good hamburgers and a nice greasy cheesesteak that was particularly good. It’s too bad they shuttered back in 2003.
My aunt worked at Kmart when I was a little girl, I'm 52. My Mom and I would sometimes take her back and forth to work. Yes, the popcorn smell was amazing! Looking back, the times seemed so innocent and fun.
I love Sara. I lost my mom 2 years, Sara reminds me a lot of my mother. I watch Sara’s videos mainly when I start missing my mom real bad, which is on a weekly basis. The comfort I get when I watch during those days where I’m missing mom so bad, is almost the same comfort I got from my mother. The fact she posts recipes is a win for me as well. My deepest condolences to you ❤ I lost my Mom less than a year ago. It's so hard sometimes thinking about her. Other times I think of how beautiful, funny, and loving she was.
I miss Kmart it was always such a fun place to go shopping. Loved all the blue light specials and what great deals they were. I remember the grills at Kmart and all the nice meals we got when we ate there. I remember the sub sandwiches with chips and soda. I also remember being able to purchase pizza by the slice and chili footlong hot dogs too. I remember buying school supplies at Kmart too. Was so much fun getting to look through all the neat pocket folders and rims of notebook paper. And getting to pick out new pair of school shoes too. Thanks for the great memory. Enjoyed your video. Love from Ky.
The newness smell of school supplies every Fall…. 😊 As a kid, I always looked forward to school shopping at K-Mart (and Target, too, as we were in MN, the home of the bullseye store).
Love the blast from the past recipe!!! I remember walking into Kmart and the 1st thing I noticed each time was the smell of popcorn, so before I'd leave it became habit to get a bag of popcorn and a cherry icee😉 Good times!
Awww Sara you just brought me right back to my childhood! We didn't have a lot of money growing up so when my family packed into a taxi to take a trip to Kmart my Mom would get these for us for dinner! It was a real treat for us! Thank you for wrapping it too that was so nostalgic for me 😊
What decade was this? I remember going to Kmart in the 90s, but I cannot remember this! I remember little Caesars being inside Kmart or target, but not this. The sandwich looks delicious
This is a great memory Sara, thank you! I’m from Philadelphia so our K-Mart called them Hoagies of course! And I do remember K-Mart used bologna too and believe it or not, they were delicious:) We loved going to K-Mart when we were kids. We could walk, it was literally in front of our house. Our K-Mart had a great game room too with skee-ball, mini-bowling and a ton of bubble gum machines. We had so much fun there, especially when the gum ball machines broke and gave like 10 gum balls at a time😊
These look SO GOOD, and when you said "School shoppin' "...my childhood came rushing back like a flood! I watched intently and hung on every word! Lol! These are just exactly as I remember them being! We always took them to-go and that was our supper (along with chips & baked beans) after a long day of shopping for school clothes & supplies. These sandwiches were the best part of that entire day, and you recreated that moment in time for me! I love your channel and I'm thankful you're here! ❤🎉
Same for my family, we had a big family so after shopping my mother was probably exhausted and she would buy them for supper. Brings back so many memories.
Loved these subs when I was little and haven’t found any similar still. I’ll have to give this a go! Thank you Sara for bringing back some great memories. My grandma lived really close to a Kmart and we’d walk over there to “look around” which always meant a sub sandwich and a frozen coke for me! ❤️🥰
I can’t even begin to tell you how many times I have thought about these over the years. I have never found another place that can replicate these subs! ❤
THANK YOU for such a fun walk down memory lane! My father used to buy those sandwiches for us and I do remember how they would discount them at the end of the day! I remember all the other things that other people have mentioned in these comments comments! Thanks again for sharing!
I worked at Kmart in Ventura, Calif. in the deli from 1981- 1986 and I use to make those subs and also we made ham and cheese sandwiches on hamburger buns. I loved working there. I was 19 years old, a new mother and when our son was only 11months old, I became a widow. Life is better now 😊
I’m a millennial but we also did our back to school shopping at Kmart. My sister and I usually went with our grandparents and we also used to eat there. My grandpa would sneak us away from my grandma and buy us treats and then she would come find us and scold him lol. I miss them very much so thanks for helping bring back good memories of our times together.
They had the smaller section in the middle of the stores with frozen cokes and candy but they had round shaved ham sandwiches with American cheese, shredded lettuce and they came in a plastic tube with 4. Loved those!! Thats for taking us back to the blue light special sara
I remember back in the day when times were tuff we would go buy a bag of those ham and cheese sandwiches they were delicious and made many a meals when you were pinching pennies brings back alot of memories i loved Kmart. 😊👍
You nailed it Sara! Right down to the peppercorn salami, I didn't know what they were back then and I picked them out of the meat. You are a old soul...I am 66 and you described them exactly!☮☮💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛🌸🌸
Just driving back from a concert tonight, stopped at Buckeyes, commented how I think their italian hoagie is the best I've ever bought somewhere, then thought about it and corrected myself that K-Mart subs were the best. I get home and see this video. Thanks Sara!
My biological father tragically passed away 12 days before my twin brother and I were born. My mother just told me recently that he used to love these subs!! Thanks for sharing this recipe. I can't wait to make some and see what my dad enjoyed. 😊
Yes me too😊 remember the ones on the hamburger buns. they would have four in a little plastic bag😂 they were so good! That was the good old days. I loved them. Have a good one
I do remember K-mart. Sara, you are such a delightful person. I live in Alabama, and I enjoy your videos very much. I feel like we could be great friends. You seem like such an easy going person. Sara, you are truly grounded and so beautiful. Oscar Mayer has a way of BOLONG&A. Remember when microwaves first came out.. my siblings and I would put a piece of bologna and a slice of cheese in the ginormous microwave and watch it curl into mouth watering heaven. Then a year later we were told if you look at the microwave while in use you’ll get cancer. We were so innocent. We would talk about is cancer bad through your eyeballs? Funny memories. Thank you for your true sweetness. I remember KMart as a Lay A Way department line in the back of the store and every Friday my nana and I getting stuff to make tacos. Thank you Simply Sara.
My dad had to buy these subs everytime we went into kmart. Loved them so much! Thank you for sharing this recipe! It's sort of funny because i was just talking with someone this past week about missing this subs so much and how good they were.
❤❤❤ I loved this video! Kmart was so important to my childhood. Loved the frozen coke drinks and subs! I went to Kmart so many times with my mom as a little girl. I remember being so sad when I knew they were closing and I remember the last day walking through the store.
I too was so sad when they closed in my state. Very great memories going with my Gramma as a young girl. Then all my growing up years on my own I would go. I especially loved their cafe as a kid with gramma. Also as an adult I loved holiday shopping at kmart, Halloween and Christmas the most.
We LOVED Kmart's deli!!! My parents usually got subs a couple times a month, so yummy. The popcorn, frozen Cokes, nachos, loved it, & ours had pizza. I was just telling my husband about the subs a few weeks ago, his Kmart was small & didn't have a deli. So glad you posted this, I'm going to make these this weekend!!
I used to watch your shows years ago, then I lost track of you. I was so happy to find your show again today, but bless your heart, I miss seeing your sweet smile!! Keep up the good work.
Thank you Sara for taking me down memory Lane how I miss Kmart I use to love shopping in there and especially eating in there everything is just closing down okay you take care and God bless
Oh man! Here in Grass Valley CA we had one of the last two Kmarts in the country for a while. Closed in late 2021 and is now a Target that opened in April. Kmart was my jam!
That sure dose bring back memories in the early 80s if we would earn money it was always straight to Kmart for a toy and a sub I always took the onion off never have liked them thank you for your show
This was an awesome "throwback classic" Kmart Sub memory! Thank you for sharing this! Would love to see you do more of these throwback classics! Blessings to you!
Kmart Icees ❤. My Grandfather would tell me to save my money for “a rainy a day” when I was little. On days it was pouring out, literally, I’d ask him if we could go to Kmart to spend some of it lol❤
Kmart is a Wonderful Memory for Me. Me and Mommy would go there and it was great. Love All You Videos. You are a Great Cook/ Chef. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with the World. You are differently a Earth Angel. 🎉❤🎉
I loved Kmart. I miss that store so much😢😢😢 they did have some delicious Submarine sandwiches. Remember the ones they sold on the little hamburger buns that was probably before your time😂😂😂😂 thanks for the video❤
Kmart was my first job!! I loved their sub! The one near me just had a deli counter in the front as you walk out! Their was one just a few miles further down the road that had a full-service sit down style café.
That's what I was about to comment, too! I bet they taste as good as they look! Would cost a pretty penny at the market, but I bet Sara got a real good deal at the produce stand.
Nostalgic, I remember as a kid, when I would stay home from school, my grandparents would take me with them to Kmart, and my grandpa would take me to the food area, we would get nachos while waiting for my grandma to finish shopping. Love this :) brings back great memories, and this looks amazing!
I miss K-Mart! In Memphis TN we did not have the place in our KMART to sit down. I wish they would of had the subs! My favorite was slurpees, coke and cherry❤Thanks for a blast from the past! Great memories
My great aunt would take me to Kmart and we always ate at the cafe. One time they had a contest and you got to spin the spinner! I won a banana split 🥰
Miss Kmart. Those sandwiches were so good. My Mom and I would always get the simple nachos. Chips with the cheese, let it get semi soggy. Maaan! So good. Thanks for the throwback.❤
Oh my, this really took me back. I shopped at Kmart from my childhood up until they started closing all the stores around me, such a shame. My son got to experience sitting in their cafe a few times. It's really sad to see all the long time stores closing like Sears, K-mart, etc. Your sub looks really good, I'm going to have to try that. Thanks for a great trip down memory lane.
I love this video! It brought back some good memories! I miss Kmart.💖. My go-to was the frozen Coke! Every time! I miss those blue light specials too - but you had to watch out for some of the elderly ladies! 😆 They meant business!!! 🤕🤣😂 🙏🇺🇸💖🐾
I love how authentic and unassuming your cooking channel is Sara. I mean, your kitchen and home aren't the tidiest, your clothing hasn't been laundered, and I'm assuming you're not ready to receive because you don't show yourself. But you still upload a video with all its warts on UA-cam. On top of that, you're not the least bit embarrassed to let the world know you used to shop at Kmart. I am a "sub" (lol) for life now. ❤
I just wanted to say that I just recently started watching your channel, and I can't stop watching! Love your videos, love your recipes! Keep being awesome! ❤
Hi Sara. Wow, this submarine sandwich looks awfully good. I love a sub. I think I’d switch up these cheese. Probably provolone. Thanks, hon!! I’m hungry now. 😋😘
When I was a child, Kmart sold these little buns with cooked ham, American cheese and shredded lettuce. I don't know what they called them, but they came either 2 or 3 to a package, and they were so good, very inexpensive too! I bought them with my allowance every time we went!
My gf calls them grinders and it's her fave food!!! She swears she had the best grinders in CT!!! And the end of the grinder was the best part, where all the ingredients melded together!!!
Also I agree, there was something magical that happened when those sandwiches were wrapped in plastic wrap! It's like the cheese kind of melted and it just made the sandwich so much better. I don't get it but it's true what you're saying!
American butties are amazing!! I know they aren’t exactly slimming, but the sheer amount of filling is incredible. Here in the UK sandwiches are a much meaner looking product, not stuffed to the gills like this delicious looking sub. (Butty, btw, is a word for sandwich used where I grew up near Liverpool, although it’s spreading round the UK now)
I’m in my 50’s I haven’t thought of this sandwich since I was 10. Literally first thing I thought after warm nostalgia was they used way too much mustard and there you were with the mustard! That’s when I knew I was remembering them correctly 😂 thank you for such a fun video!
I can just see y'all back in the day Sara, hitchin' the horses up to your hay wagon and trottin' down to the Kmart. Yeeeeeehaw!!! 🧑🌾 The hay probably helped with cleanup of any gastrointestinal mishaps along the way too. 👍🏼
Thanks for showing us this. We used to eat them in Fort Worth when Kmart had their Blue-Light-Specials. We used to love Kmart during their hey-day, before they went downhill.
Thank you, Sara. I loved shopping at Kmart. There were all kinds of great deals back then and the clothes were made in the USA! I miss those days. I'm a vegetarian now so I'd probably need to swap out the meat but all in all it looks good!
I loved those subs. The ham and cheese weren't bad either. They had two flavors of Icee drinks too, usually cola and red, no idea what the flavor actually was. My grandfather usually bought a big bag of the popcorn for us to share. Fond memories of K-mart.

Shalom from NC
Wow Sara,I'm Lovin that.Im so hungry right now. Looks very inviting. Thanks Sara.❤😊
What a great throwback memory of Kmart. The popcorn was delicious too. Sending Cali love.
OMG! I was just talking with my mom,how we loved these!! I'm going to surprise her with this
Oh man! Here in Grass Valley CA we had one of the last two Kmarts in the country for a while. Closed in late 2021 and is now a Target that opened in April. Kmart was my jam!
I just remember the Blue Light "specials".... Light flashing, had to find it- and not always so special (but brilliant)
Loved these!! My siblings and I would eat these one after another!! They were magical..never could find another like it. Loved their Cafe and candy.
Thank you for the video, Sara. We are looking forward to some fun recipes this fall. Love your videos!
I really miss K-Mart. I went there èvery Saturday with my Mom and Grandmom. Wonderful times. I'm Def gonna be trying these!! Love you Sara!!❤🌻
Sara is the best! Continuously, she makes great videos.
Thank you so much Sara. We were just talking about these last month and how much we missed them. Your amazing for sharing this with us.
I loved Kmart. I miss that store so much😢😢😢 they did have some delicious Submarine sandwiches. Remember the ones they sold on the little hamburger buns that was probably before your time😂😂😂😂 thanks for the video❤
I remember
Kmart was my first job!! I loved their sub! The one near me just had a deli counter in the front as you walk out! Their was one just a few miles further down the road that had a full-service sit down style café.
Those are gorgeous tomatoes!!!!
That's what I was about to comment, too! I bet they taste as good as they look! Would cost a pretty penny at the market, but I bet Sara got a real good deal at the produce stand.
More like melons I'd say.
Nostalgic, I remember as a kid, when I would stay home from school, my grandparents would take me with them to Kmart, and my grandpa would take me to the food area, we would get nachos while waiting for my grandma to finish shopping. Love this :) brings back great memories, and this looks amazing!
That looks good! I think I’ll make these soon and put my homegrown tomatoes to use! ❤
I miss K-Mart! In Memphis TN we did not have the place in our KMART to sit down. I wish they would of had the subs! My favorite was slurpees, coke and cherry❤Thanks for a blast from the past! Great memories
Oh man ..what a blast from the past!! I bet I ate a 1000 of those..now I am gonna have to make me some..thanks Sara for sharing!!!
Hi Simply Sara. I miss seeing your beautiful smile while you are creating delicious masterpieces. I hope you are having a great summer 😊
My great aunt would take me to Kmart and we always ate at the cafe. One time they had a contest and you got to spin the spinner! I won a banana split 🥰
What a gripping story Sara. It made me feel like I was actually there.
I remember my father was a cook in the little Kmart “diner” back in the late 60s and early 70s in Southern New Jersey. Thanks for the memories. 🌸
Miss Kmart.
Those sandwiches were so good. My Mom and I would always get the simple nachos. Chips with the cheese, let it get semi soggy. Maaan! So good.
Thanks for the throwback.❤
Yeah those nachos were my jam
Love you Sara. Watched you for years. Perfect relaxation to watch you cook ❤❤
Me too. She’s a gem.
We had sandwiches today too. We toast our sour dough bread and then add bacon, vinegar & oil, salt & pepper, and Italian seasoning 🤗 Thank you!
That sounds good!
I love this video! It brought back some good memories! I miss Kmart.💖. My go-to was the frozen Coke! Every time! I miss those blue light specials too - but you had to watch out for some of the elderly ladies! 😆 They meant business!!! 🤕🤣😂
🙏🇺🇸💖🐾
I love how authentic and unassuming your cooking channel is Sara. I mean, your kitchen and home aren't the tidiest, your clothing hasn't been laundered, and I'm assuming you're not ready to receive because you don't show yourself. But you still upload a video with all its warts on UA-cam. On top of that, you're not the least bit embarrassed to let the world know you used to shop at Kmart. I am a "sub" (lol) for life now. ❤
She doesn't show herself anymore because of the constant bullying she has received in the past and still receive as of now
Lauren knows ALL about WARTS… just ask her gynecologist
Thank you for this and the advice to wrap the subs up to make the magic happen🎉 I love all your videos ❤Sweet❤ Sara❤
I just wanted to say that I just recently started watching your channel, and I can't stop watching! Love your videos, love your recipes! Keep being awesome! ❤
Wow thanks for making this video. I loved their sandwiches
Sara, do you inform visitors to your home about the chair situation there?
The same way your parents warn visitors about their weird son in the basement, Otto
OMG ... brought back alot of memories
Oh Sara! I remember the Kmart subs well! And I’m 61 years old! But never did they look as good as yours! 👍✌️❤️🧑🍳
I wonder if Sara has the same problem applying the plastic wrap before rimming Betty.
If she does, thank goodness u can teach her all about rimming, Dominic
you're bringing back some good memories Sarah- great channel keep up the good work!!
Yummy!!! Great memories.. I had the same experiences. thank you for the reminder and the delicious recipe!
I loved those subs. The ham and cheese weren't bad either. They had two flavors of Icee drinks too, usually cola and red, no idea what the flavor actually was. My grandfather usually bought a big bag of the popcorn for us to share. Fond memories of K-mart.
Coke or cherry
Oh my goodness I am SO glad to have found your page Sara, it reminds me of my Mom and Maw Maws cooking growing up! I'm gonna be making so many of your recipes now!
