- Maryland is leaving the Union. But they didn't!
words by James Ryder Randall
music: "O Tannenbaum"(1799)
published by Miller & Beacham
sung by sheet music singer, Fred Feild
piano according to the sheet music
1. The despot’s heel is on thy shore
Maryland, My Maryland
His touch is at thy temple door
Maryland, My Maryland
Avenge the patriotic gore
That fleck’d the streets of Baltimore
And be the Battle Queen of yore
Maryland, My Maryland
2. Hark to a wand’ring Son’s appeal
Maryland, My Maryland
My Mother State! to thee I kneel
Maryland, My Maryland
For life and death, for woe and weal
Thy peerless chivalry reveal
And gird they beauteous limbs with steel
Maryland, My Maryland
3. Thou wilt not cower in the dust
Maryland, My Maryland
Thy beaming sword shall never rust
Maryland, My Maryland
Remember Caroll’s sacred trust
Remember Howard’s warlike thrust
And all thy slumberers with the just
Maryland, My Maryland
4. Come! for thy shield is bright and strong
Maryland, My Maryland
Come! for thy dalliance, does thee wrong
Maryland, My Maryland
Come to thine own heroic throng
That stalks with Liberty along
And give a new Key to thy song
Maryland, My Maryland
5. Dear Mother! burst the tyrant’s chain
Maryland, My Maryland
Virginia should not call in vain
Maryland, My Maryland
She meets her sisters on the plain
“Sic semper” tis the proud refrain
That baffles minions back amain
Maryland, My Maryland
6. I see the blush upon thy cheek
Maryland, My Maryland
But thou wast ever bravely meek
Maryland, My Maryland
But lo! there surges forth a shriek
From hill to hill, from creek to creek
Potomac calls to Chesapeake
Maryland, My Maryland
7. Thou wilt not yield the vandal toll
Maryland, My Maryland
Thou wilt not crook to his control
Maryland, My Maryland
Better the fire upon thee roll
Better the blade, the shot, the bowl
Than crucifixion of the soul
Maryland, My Maryland
8. I hear the distant thunder-hum
Maryland, My Maryland
The Old line’s bugle, fife and drum
Maryland, My Maryland
She is not dead, nor deaf, nor dumb
Huzza! she spurns the Northern scum
She breathes - she burns! she’ll come! she’ll come
Maryland, My Maryland
The man who wrote this poem was from Baltimore but was away at college in Louisiana. He read in the newspaper that Massachusetts troops had passed through his home town. In the battle, one of his personal friends was killed. The tune here is the German folksong also used for the song O Christmas Tree.

On September 6, 1862, as Hood's Texas Brigade waded the waters of the Potomac near White's Ferry the 4th Texas Band, blared out Maryland My Maryland. Eleven days later, many of Hood's brave Texans lay wounded and dying in Miller's cornfield at Sharpsburg, MD. May the song always be a memorial to those dark days of our country when we failed words; choosing instead to bathe our fields in blood.
I never went to the USA (south american speaking), but with that anthem I really want to visit there. Must be really beautiful.
Was born and raised on 1950s in northwest Baltimore. We sang this song quote often in elementary school and I remember it fondly.
Hetty Cary's sister, Jenny, is the one who picked the music to go with the lyrics of the famous poem.
Maryland was and will always be southern. Geographically and culturally!
Maryland was an occupied state under military control.
It was held in the union by force.
No citizen in Maryland had rights under illegal control of Lincons martial law orders.
Thanks for uploading this song!
Sadly it's been ripped from history and is no longer the state song.
The despots heel is still on thy shore!
Maryland is a Northern State culterally, the Maryland House of Delegates voted to abolish Slavery in Maryland and join the Union during the Civil War.
Grand Duke Eli Seriously? Where you read that from. I’m Union guy, too. I’m proud for my state serving in the Union.
@@BmorePatriot Or was in the Smithsonian's Tour of the State House in Annapolis

The bigger question is, "What is Maryland doing in the BIG TEN conference?"
I know this tune from the "Atlanta Bazar" in Gone with the wind. Its lovely.
Huh.. thought this song was about the war of 1812
**cough** Star Spangled Banner
@@technocraticrepublicofkana1100 true
Jefferson Davis said that Maryland was "the outpost of the South first to be approached by Northern invaders.""
Thats sad they took it out i love that verse "the despots heels upon thy shores" they changed it cause no one cares bout history anymore the south still surpressed to this day with complaints of the rebel flags and taking down statues in Charlottesville , it saddens me
Oh, but we do care. We care about the brutality of slavery. Those statues were put up during the Jim Crow period to intimidate people of color. Your history is ugly and should be presented as such.
@@smaneck The Confederate States are beautiful things and should be celebrated. The war was not about slavery.
@@durhamviking1809 Indeed it was. If you read their Declarations of Independence the preservation of the institution of slavery is always mentioned first. Lost Cause propaganda is a lie.
@@smaneck I will have a read.
Susan Maneck the war had nothing to do with slavery you moron. And those statues were put up after the war to celebrate the honor and courage that those men had when fighting tyranny.
so this is where oh chistmas tree's music came from? or is it the other way around?
"Oh Tanenbaum" or in English "Oh Christmas tree" melody came first being written in the 1600s
The fact some colleges have banned this (supposedly pro slavery) makes me want to play it more.
Hmm, I don't care if the legislature changed the song. To me this is the state song.
Indeed! Carpetbaggers have every reason to hate this song.
Now where have I heard this tune before.......
It shares the melody of “O Christmas Tree (O Tannebaum)” so it may be familiar?
As a native son of Maryland who has mostly black ancestry, along with white and probably red, the song is a pretty ditty due to its borrowing of notes from an earlier song. The words however are only of historic interest and do not inspire the devotion to my home state that is apparently intended - just as the state flag, and even its name, glorify a monarchic obeisance no longer valid.
UMD's Alma Mater might be a more fitting song for the entire state than "Maryland, My Maryland".
PLEASE EXPLAIN THE FLAG....WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
Would you rather stay in slavery in Africa or be freed in the greatest country on earth you act like the confederacy was bad in comparison to the rest of the world.
Don't assume my ancestors in Africa were slaves. The maternal branch of my father were free immigrants from Morocco. My mother's maternal ancestors include a man who was recorded as free in the first US census of 1790 in lower Sussex, Delaware.@@Stand_watie
