- A Civil War song also called The Prisoner's Hope.
words and music by George Frederick Root
published by Root & Cady
sung by sheet music singer, Fred Feild
piano according to the sheet music
1. In the prison cell I sit
Thinking Mother dear, of you
And our bright and happy home so far away
And the tears they fill my eyes
Spite of all that I can do
Tho’ I try to cheer my comrades and be gay
Chorus:
Tramp, tramp, tramp, the boys are marching
Cheer up comrades, they will come
And beneath the starry flag
We shall breathe the air again
Of the freeland in our own beloved home
2. In the battle front we stood
When their fiercest charge they made
And they swept us off a hundred men or more
But before we reached their lines
They were beaten back dismayed
And we heard the cry of vict’ry o’er and o’er
3. So within the prison cell
We are waiting for the day
That shall come to open wide the iron door
And the hollow eye grows bright
And the poor heart almost gay
As we think of seeing home and friends once more
---------------------------------------------------------------
This was a subject that was very near the hearts of the loyal people of the North. It was the fate of Northern prisoners of war in Confederate jails. Many of those died there. This melody was later used for another song, "Jesus Loves the Little Children".

Thanks for posting this!
Absolutely brilliant. Thank you.
I was impressed by how in tune your polyphony was! Very nice. Thank you for helping to preserve this piece!
Gosh, thanks! A big tip on being in tune is being able to hear what you are doing. Good headphones, recording software, a quiet studio, the right balance between voice and accompaniment.
@@sheetmusicsinger9651 I also want to thank you for this song. I learned it at a child but could barely remember the chorus. I cried as I sang it with the song!
finally i found version which i was for searching too long :)))))))))))
Very well done and pleasing to the ear!
In the prison cell I sit, thinking Mother, dear, of you,
And our bright and happy home so far away,
And the tears they fill my eyes 'spite of all that I can do,
Tho' I try to cheer my comrades and be gay.
Tramp! Tramp! Tramp! The boys are marching,
Cheer up comrades they will come,
And beneath the starry flag we shall breathe the air again,
Of the free land in our own beloved home.[2]

Efectivamente este es la inspiración para el himno de la UC.
Gud
When you travel to the year 1865.
I believe the melody is from god save Ireland
i think this came first because god save ireland was made in 1867 this was 1864
other way around
This is the original. A lot of Union civil war songs, especially George F. Root ones like this one became really popular overseas and the melodies were reused. Same reason you hear the "glory glory hallelujah" John browns body/ Battle Hymn of the Republic refrain in dozens of contexts now.
@@minniem909 This is also WAY older than Jesus Loves The Little Children. This song is from 1864.
While I can't confirm it, it seems that the beloved children's hymn wasn't written until 1913, just shy of 50 years later. Clarence Herbert Woolston took George Root's melody and wrote new lyrics, creating the song we all know and love.

Jesus loves the little children,
all the children of the world;
Red and yellow, black and white,
they are precious in His sight,
Jesus loves the little children of the world!
THAT'S HOW I KNOW THIS TUNE, THANK YOU!
Jesus calls the children dear,
Come to Me and never fear,
For I love the little children of the world;
I will take you by the hand,
Lead you to the better land,
For I love the little children of the world.
Refrain
Jesus loves the little children,
All the children of the world.
Red and yellow, black and white,
All are precious in His sight,
Jesus loves the little children of the world.
[Alternate refrain:
Jesus died for all the children,
All the children of the world.
Red and yellow, black and white,
All are precious in His sight,
Jesus died for all the children of the world.]
Jesus is the Shepherd true,
And He’ll always stand by you,
For He loves the little children of the world;
He’s a Savior great and strong,
And He’ll shield you from the wrong,
For He loves the little children of the world.
Refrain
I am coming, Lord, to Thee,
And Your soldier I will be,
For You love the little children of the world;
And Your cross I’ll always bear,
And for You I’ll do and dare,
For You love the little children of the world.
Refrain
