I think the only game to remain in the Top 20 charts longer than Robocop was Simpsons: Hit and Run, and that's only because ELSPA stopped counting the 8-bit charts. Also, they totally should have used the title screen music in the 2014 Reboot movie. That scene where he's shooting enemies down a corridor would have been perfect for it.
I really love this music since the first time, I really enjoy this game for hours, days and weeks and months, I realize that speccy Robocop is part of my childhood, really appreciate the difference between levels everyone reminding scenes of a movie that really impressed me when I was a child. I love it. Thanks, you made great high quality videos. New sub!
Brilliant vid sir. Your skills are amazing! That music is so haunting.... and then Speccy music used on an Ariston advert! There is a scene by scene fan remake of Robocop on UA-cam somewhere. The alley scene with the woman and the shooting between the legs has to be seen to be believed. Cobra Assault Cannon... state of the art bang bang! The hostage at the end is meant to be the Old Man but looks like Mr T. I pity the fool who tries to take Mr T hostage.
I was trying to work out who it reminded me of, good shout! Haha. I'm pretty sure I saw that Robocop remake a good while back... Also, the Robocop rap.
Yeah I got the big box version which had a fault in the disc and would only load half the time so had to buy the smaller version too as I didn't want to take the box back.
❤❤ Wow what an deep diving review. I'm glad you didn't brush over the musical master piece. I learnt to play the song on my keyboard and it's so fun to play. Though you forgot about mention the composers name Jonathan Dunn. I love that you mention the songs/covers made afterwards and it has also been used in a wierd Dilbert 3 video and two rap songs.
Ahh the music, could listen to that endlessly. Cracking game, and only one of 2 games I ever purchased on disk for my +3. The other being Bad Dudes vs Dragon Ninja.
One solid choice, the other not so good (in my opinion). Bit of a shame the +3 came so late in the Spectrum's life. Then again, disk copies of games were usually nearly double the price of the tape versions.
Nice! This was one of my “played at a mates place but never owned” games. May have to revisit via an emulator! PS I like the theme song, but surely NO speccy game can rival the musical ambition of Agent X???? Damn, I LOVED that jam....
I LOVED this game as a kid, and for many many many years nothing ever came as close as this to making me *feel* like I was RoboCop (the "recently" released RoboCop: Rogue City took its crown for me). And that title screen music 💕
Best music in a video game I've heard, and I've heard the Cybernoid music. High praise indeed. These chip tunes would pave the path for all my love of electonica in all its beautiful forms (particularly looking at you breakcore 😊, but all things like Warp and Rephlex to be honest)
I had the big-box c64 version. And you know what, there is more to the speccy RoboCop. More speech, small details like turning to walk into the alley, glass behind Dick Jones shattering. The c64 release is moody, dark and much more messy. The infamous warehouse bug and high score table paints a troubled picture. Heck even the loading pic is Robo getting shot to pieces by ED209.
'Hitler in a petrol station', lmao. Think he's meant to be the guy Emil threatened in the movie ('You a college boy? Think you could outsmart a bullet?') but I can't unsee him as der Fuhrer now. I liked details like that being included in the game actually, same as at the end of the Steel Mill level where you get the big anti tank gun there's another ED-209 guarding the OCP building at the end and you can blow it up easily with the big gun just like he did in the movie. Probably still to this day one of the best licensed games I've played. I would've liked a proper boss fight of some sort with Clarence though.
I loved this game when it came out, I think I first played it on a demo tape from Sinclair User..? I remember having the poster that came with the game up on my wall for donkeys years even after I'd upgraded to an NES. Robocop was one of my favourite films ever at that age and I still enjoy it now, tho I don't watch it 3-4 times every weekend.
The C64 version of the opening is great, too. Same song, just on a SID. I wouldn't call it better or worse, just different. The loading music for that version is also the venerable Ocean Loader 5, also by Jonathan Dunn, which may be the hypest loading music ever. The game itself is the same yet different. You can jump, have infinite ammo and there's no hit stun(though that gives you an issue of not always being sure if you got hit or not other than your life bar vanishing), and the sprites are smaller, but overall, it uses the same stages and enemies, including the rescue the hostage parts.
Actually, it wasn't just the title theme. The in game music on the Gameboy throws in a few nods to the Poledouris score but it's still recognisable as the original music
@@arostwocents I don't know if i'd call it a port, I think it was created from scratch by some of the original programmers at Ocean, notably including Mike Lamb and musician Johnathan Dunn. certainly it owes far more to this than any of the sequels or data east versions, like the NES though.
@@RoseTintedSpectrum Cool! I will check them out soon. Batman has some definite similarities to Robocop, most of which are good and at least one of which might make you laugh/groan. Unfortunately my copy had a bug in it so that it always crashed between level 4 and 5 but I've watched a walkthrough more recently to see what I missed out on. :)
Great video! One of the best Speccy games and that music - perfection. I'd say the best music to any game I've ever heard. Jon Dunn is a legend. Plus, the speech samples.. dropped my jaw when I first heard it.
It's still pretty damn impressive. Compare it to the Oliver Twins screaming down your lug holes at the start of the Dizzy games and this is unbelievable!
@@RoseTintedSpectrum That was them, was it? Never knew! Music-wise, Dizzy had some awesome tunes, mind. Magicland and Kwik Snax spring to mind but for speech, I don't think you'll better RoboCop.
Never played it back in the day, I only did it several years later under emulation. I had read here and there that it was considered an easy game. So far I have been unable to get past the warehouse level. On the contrary, I finished the Data East coin-op (of which this is not a port) with just one credit. 30 years ago, no less.
My plan, eventually, it to cover every single game ever made before the year 2000. Having an achievable goal is not my strong point. Regardless, I'll likely have a full review of other versions of the game at some point. There were an absolute tonne of RoboCop games, versions and everything else. I could probably just make a RoboCop channel to be fair.
Damn it. _I_ was going to use the “I’d buy _that_ for a dollar” phrase; now I’m not sure what to say. While I appreciate the game now (mostly, because I’m impressed with the coding), I remember not giving it enough credit back in the day. I guess, I found it too hard. Still, I like _RoboCob 2_ even more. It too is pretty hard, but graphics- and coding-wise, it’s even more impressive. Oh, and it’s got the proper soundtrack.
Sorry, just to be clear... you liked it then? ;P 09:39 The "Hitler" is a character in the film, the student studying geometry whilst working nights at a petrol station, thats threatened by the bad guys (the station blows up with RoboCop striding through the flames).
Spoke to Bill Harbison about this and it turns out the .z80 file I was using was slightly modified to include that random reference. The original game lists: Murphy, Lewis, ED 209, Morton, Houlton. So it seems 2Vika Bi is just some random person who uploaded the .z80, hah!
I have no real interest in the film (I think it's crap), but the game was amazing. Certainly on a technical level anyway (I've never found it all that playable). It's still something I often fire up under an emulator.
It was so weird when Aniston used that Robocop chiptune... "WTF that's the Robocop music!"
The opening should have had him saying "You're gonna be one bad Mother Crusher" - the amazing ITV dub!
Once I even called him…. Airhead!

Glad you enjoyed it! The game has a great level of variety throughout - still stands out as a great title to this day.
Charlie Brooker also chose this track as one of his Desert Island Disks. Nice to see VGM music given the same respect as chart music or classical.

My very first tenner speccy game.
I can still feel the burning looks from my parents as I begged, pleaded and blackmailed them to buy the bugger.
