Hey Santee - the method of identification used was the Bertillon method where precise measurements were made of the criminals height, weight, phsyical characteristics and measurements of facial features and limb lengths. Before fingerprints this was used to identify criminals and was created by a French police officer. It became a science called anthropometry. Liked the music BTW.
WOW! Thanks for the input, LF! It's great to have that. Given the poor documentation on the frontier, I thought this attention to detail was fascinating.
Thanks for a quick look at prisons in the old west! Good luck drinking coffee through a straw for the next few weeks, hot liquids and straws aren’t a good combo. Loved the video, keep up the good work!

I had a feeling locking ol’ Dirty Dan in that prison cell wasn’t going to be the best move for you... turns out I was right! Hope ya heal up in time for the next episode!
I wonder if Ghost Santee has ever been in prison before..you know..Being a Ghost..lol.. Hey, good work, Santee. Trying to watch all the videos here. I'll get there.
I've heard about one town marshal that confined his prisoners by staking them to the ground under a cowhide. Another marshal wanted to attend a local dance so he shot his "escaping" prisoner and went to the dance.
I haven't heard either of those. What I can tell you is that there are a couple of towns here in AZ where they didn't have a proper jail built yet and chained the prisoner to a tree.
I so wanted to go Southwest this summer but everyone else wants to go to Montana 😞 Thanks for this great explanation of history! Was T-Rex a prison guard?
Yuma territorial prison was a nice place relatively. They lost one prison in 20 during the operation of the prison, By contrast angola in Louisianan had an 80% death with in five years.
I did do one Jimmy, and here's the link ua-cam.com/video/G-eP0R2TJo4/v-deo.html I would like to do more, but kinda cautious about UA-cam's new gun policies.
Jesse James also had a hide out just a couple blocks down from the Stillwater Prison. Two idiots from the cities burned the prison down. Now there is a bunch of over priced condo's in it's place
I have been on the haunted tour of the Rawlins Wy prison and Laramie Wy prison. Wyoming is full of early history in downtown Cheyenne Wy there is a old private building now that holds 3 original cells in the basement one was used to hold Tom Horn before he was hanged in 1903
I took a tour of Yuma territorial prison back in 1982..there were lots of pictures of the inmates up on a wall. I was surprised at the number of famous outlaws who were there... under each picture, it said what the inmate was convicted of and how much time he got...quite a few of them were there for adultry. If you were caught cheating on your wife it carried a prison sentence..if I remember right, I think the average sentence for adultry was about two to four years.. also at this prison was a deep hole in the ground so deep you couldnt see the bottom...if an inmate misbehaved or tried to escape, that's where they put them. That's where the term.."The Hole".. came from. I also toured the town jail in Virginia city Nevada. There were no beds or cots in the jail, nothing to sit on either... because a bed or cot was considered a luxury that the prisoner didn't deserve. The jail cells were not big enough to lay down in. It was just basically a small cage to stand in.. The prisoners in those days didnt have it nearly as good as we see in cowboy westerns on TV
after seeing Dirty Dog bite you in another video he gad it coming to him to be locked in the cell, too bad it wasn’t locked 🤣 that ending was hilarious, i couldn’t stop laughing at it is the jail there a faithful recreation or Hollywood magic that looks great?
I love looking at old photos of people long dead. I always wonder what they did directly after taking it and how their lives turned out. Especially if it's not famous people.. just people that would have been completely lost to history if it weren't for their photos.
You don't need prisons when frontier justice is available. 😀 I rode shotgun on a Stage as a ten year old at Frontier Town. Outlaws held us up and I shot one right in the ribs with a toy gun plastic bullet. He was not amused. 😀
