Thanks for this, kids were sad after I promised they could play the wii, only to find out the cable of the sensor bar had got caught on something and torn. Spliced the cable back together following your instructions and got it all working again, crisis avoided! Thanks!

@@canifixitofficial but this is common sense, not a tutorial, everyone in existence has patched a cable and the wires are usually color coded for again. Common sense.

I bought a second hand wii off of marketplace and the seller said I need to replace the sensor bar because the wire snapped.
I tried joining it and it doesn't work but as soon as I get home I'm gonna try burning the insulation off and joining. Will update my comment if I got it working
Update: working perfectly after burning off the insulation and twisting together. Didn't have isopropyl so I just cleaned them with a paper towel to get the soot off.
    Thank you so much.

That is a common problem when trying to solder things together. I used to be an electronics technician, I went to school for two years to do that, but never really worked in the industry. I do have enough soldering experience to tell you that this happens a lot and all you really need is some flux. If you dip each wire in the flux it will actually cause the solder to draw in to it and it would literally take you probably a few seconds to get it done per Solder joint. Great job though. This video helped me.

    • @canifixitofficial

Thanks so much for the advice! I've never used flux before, but it's definitely something I wanna learn how to utilize in the near future.

Thank you for posting this excellent video. My pet rabbit chewed the wire in 3 places. I decided to abandon about 12 inches and follow your advice about burning & cleaning the exposed wire ends. The splicing worked and I am thrilled & grateful.

  • @psychotuned

Nice video, could have been cut down a little bit more, but advice worked. there are only 2 wires in the sensor cable, a red shielded and an exposed copper, then some white string looking thing.
An important note here is that the red shielding is like "painted" on the wire and must be removed in order to either solder or twist them back successfully. It won't work otherwise, I tried, and even tried with what I thought had melted/burned off the shielding, but apparently was not all the way as I went back over and burned and cleaned it off with alcohol. Twisted them together and got the sensor working again for my mom's wii.
A little tip too is you can expose more length of the wire and only burn the tip off, so the bottom is still red so you can tell which is which.

Someone has probably mentioned. But dip your wires in some flux after you twist the strands together (if it is a stranded wire). Also use 60/40 leaded solder. Unleaded is just difficult to work with. Good iron too. Pinecil is great and priced right.

Thanks. I fixed the cable by your video. The trick is the insulated coating on the wire which is not easy to notice, burn the wire with a lighter for a while and the coating should be gone. Soldering is not really necessary.

Eh, Nintendo having to save a penny by using cheap easy to snap wire. I still have grown family who come over for the holidays and summer and play Wii Sports. Sadly, the thin cable snapped and I have been struggling to splice this cable. Going to try the lighter to burn the wiring to see if that's whats going wrong for me. Its just too bad those cheapo aftermarket battery powered bars aren't on the market anymore.
