Ok, the next part is out! We take a bit of a side journey through the life of Richard the Lionheart as the story of the 4th Crusade can not be told well without the context of the 3rd Crusade. Enjoy and please don't forget to share on social media !

Crazy to believe that this started as a brief side trip from War of the Worlds series. Yet here we are 8 episodes later on history of constantinople. Youre like the extreme version of me on wikipedia. I love it!

In retrospect it is often so fun to wonder how history would have looked like without the occurence of certain 'chance' incidents, like the death of Barbarossa, or Isaac welcoming Richard instead.
There are so many very small 'chance' incidents that immensely shaped our world today that one could only guess about how the world would look like now if the more logical outcome of events became reality.
I love 'what if's' - I have a book by that name with a collection of what if scenarios in history

Judging by how Isaac spent his skill points, he really should have opted to rule over a mainland territory. The problem with an island is that you eventually run out of places to flee.

I'd love to support you on patreon as well but sadly living in a third world country it's not exactly a luxury I can afford. Have my comment and like for the algorithm at least!
Wow, thank you! Appreciate your dedication more than anything.
Oh man looking forward for the next one... One thing that strikes me is why Isaac would be so stupid to risk Cyprus for nothing, looks like the typical case of who wins writes the history, Richard saw an oportunity to take the island and so he did, then reported misstreatment from isaac as casus belli and a suitable excuse for the eternity...
Awesome comment - wars have been declared for much less. Makes me think, Richard could have been ticked off at having his time schedule pushed off by the storm and took his aggression out on Isaac who inconvenienced him.
A despot on the mainland and a tyrant on Cyprus, this is a far cry from the days of Alexios I.
Could not have said it better myself! Alexios was outstanding compared to these bozo's
This video is just an appetizer to the epic confrontation between Richard and Saladdin.
The history of the Third Crusade normally focuses on just King Richard and the Sultan Saladdin as they are the two left standing in the Levant in the end but still there so much interesting events during that time as well like Frederick Barbarossa’s taking of Iconium and Richard’s battle with Isaac Komnenos.
Goes to show that both Saladin and Richard (along with the other major players) all had interesting back stories before their fight in the holy land

In a way he really did. The German symbol they used even when invading Poland was an adaptation of the Teutonic crest.
2 brothers: one diplomatically and militarily competent, the other an absolute tool, rude and a disgrace to the family name and to his own ppl. was it that the Angeloi actually inherited the throne due to their political marriage with the Komnenos? basically, there was no civil war. or so i've heard somewhere. i wonder how(and which) Komnenos managed to split Trebizond from the empire before the 4th crusade came :). at any rate, a sad state of affairs for the byzantines. excellent video. cheers XD
Great series. I can't wait when next topic and will start.
Have you eve thought of russian civil war. Almost no one ever touched this topic.
As in the 1917 revolution?
@@FlashPointHx As a start, yes. We have September and then October revolution. But I don,t think , I am not sure how to say it, I don't think that the revolution is the moment when this pre soviet russian empire , of Gogol, Pushkin, Esenin, and of course place of feodal peasents. In other word a place where progress and medieval thinking were door to door. A place where most of the population were farmers. And all this changed drastically to some society which can be described as anti utopia.
My own opinion, I may be wrong is that it is the civil war, that time of everybody against everybody, this time of violence, that made this change possible and this topic is much more interesting than the revolution itself.
And when people think for the civil war they compare it with the US civil war, where we have north an south.
Here no itis more colorful, we have white red, green, black, americans, lapanese, Britains, Germans, chech legion, fins , so on and so on. And I haven't heard someone to make a complete topic .
Fantastic
Thank you so much 😀

Lionheartx10!
Just saying but I am really interested in Richard the lionheart especially his roles in the third crusade and Richards role in the revolt of 1173-1174 because Richard the lionheart was fighting with David of Scotland 8th Earl of huntingdon and David of Scotland is an interesting character and important person because his daughter named Isobel of Huntingdon was the great Grandmother of King Robert the Bruce of Scotland and had Robert the Bruce’s Great grandfather named Robert the Bruce 4th lord of Annandale not married Isobel of huntingdon then Robert the Bruce wouldn’t have been king of Scotland.

If the German Emperor haven't died I really think thee crusades would have gone another way. It's a shame.
agreed - Saladin would have been hard pressed to take on Barbarossa and his army
The question, while this insight and full and with rich detail-the Question is!-are you going to 1204 or to the point, more than 200 years later, in 1453?.histroialy both dates can be named as when Constantinople fell
all the way! I might take a break at 1204 and finish the Reconquista
One thing people often over look with the period after Manuel 1st dies and just before the 4th crusade… The Empire was not a stable entity and it’s power was failing fast. As a matter in fact you had surging Turks in Anatolia, Hungary nipping at the borders, Serbia (never that loyal to the Empire.) breaking off, Bulgaria breaking off, Nobles (a highly corrupt bunch.) brutalizing the peasants and barely paying taxes to Constantinople. Andronicus 1st and the Angelos dynasty were that terrible at their jobs. They could not handle the title of Emperor. Sadly the Komnenian system in place was by this time largely the cause. Not to mention the navy being severely neglected.
When the fourth crusaders arrive at constantinople - they arrived at a hollow shell. ANY other emperor would have destroyed the latin army . Only when a great civilization is rotted from within, does it lay itself open to being taken out.
@@FlashPointHx Yep. That and making the latins angry decades before with the slaughter of many. Another strong/exceptional emperor would have dealt with them. This time nope.
@@FlashPointHx The Byzantines had several opportunities to save Constantinople even after the Crusade arrived. Their defence of the harbour chain and tower of Galata was a disaster. Later, Alexios III marched his army outside the land walls, which outnumbered the Crusaders. According to some sources the Crusaders began to lose their nerve. Then Alexios ordered his troops to retreat into the city before battle commenced. He fled the following night with the treasury.
Other than poor leadership, were there other reasons for Greeks continued defeats by the Latins during this period? How did their weapons, armour and training compare?
@@ericagos1601 You are spot on - had they pushed the offensive, the 4th crusade would have ended right then and there. Armor was not as good as the latin plate, weapons were comparable from what I've read. However the training had severely languished after the Komnenian restoration ended. The navy too suffered. It was a 2nd class army IMHO
@@FlashPointHx It seems like everything that could go wrong, did go wrong- and then some. Personally speaking it is the most depressing event in history, at least in terms of cultural loss.
When you think of Rome with her incredible architecture and art (despite the sacks of 410 and 1527) you can imagine what its eastern Orthodox sister would be like today had it not been for 1204 and 1453.
One thing that I've always wondered is if Alexios IV-the exiled prince-had not been a factor, would Constantinople have suffered the same fate? I can't remember if he approached the Crusade leaders before or after Zara. Do you know if there is any evidence that the Crusade leaders had intended to attack Constantinople before he approached them with his proposition?
If Sicily is the most invaded Island in the world, then is Cyprus the second most invaded?
ps. The maps are still really awoseme
possibly
I wonder what would have happened if Barbarossa had made it to the Holy Land.
A lot of people feel that he would have cleaned Saladin's clock
