In this video we have discussed the defining relative clause. Actually, there are three kinds of relative clauses.
01.Defining relative clause. 02.Non defining relative clause.03. Connective relative clause.
We utilize defining relative clauses to give essential information about someone or something. Information that we need to understand what or who is referred in the sentence .
A defining relative clause usually comes immediately after the noun and it describes the preceding noun in such a way as to distinguish it from other nouns of the same class.
A clause of this kind is essential to the clear understanding of the noun.In the sentence :
The man who told me this refused to give me his name. "Who told me this" is the relative clause.If we omit this, it is not clear what man we are talking about.
Notice that there is no comma between a noun and a defining relative clause.
Defining relative clauses usually follow (the + noun, but they can also be used with A/An + noun,plural nouns without the and the pronouns all,none,anybody, somebody etc and those who.
Clauses following a,an + noun, plural nouns without the and somebody, someone, something sometimes define their noun or pronoun only indirectly.
The noun or pronoun in these cases is usually the object of a verb or preposition. Such as:
01. I met someone who said he knew you.
02. The book is about a girl who falls in love with a ghost.
Sometimes these clauses are separted from their noun or pronoun by a word or phrase.
01.There is a man here who wants to meet you.
02.I saw something in the paper which would interest you.
But normally relative clauses following the + noun should be placed directly after their noun or pronoun.
01. The noise that he made woke everybody up.
02. She was annoyed by something that I had said.
We usually use as relative pronoun who, Whom, whose,which and that, to introduce a defining relative clause. In the examples, the person or thing being referred to.
We always use who,that and whom for persons.
As a subject : who or that :
He is the man who want to buy our house.
The man who is learning English is my student.
We need a boy that is meritorious.
Everybody who knew him liked him.
Nobody that watched the match will ever forget it.
