- Bandsaw Buyer's Guide - This is not so much a guide to all the different brands out there so much as an overview of features to look for on these sorts of saws.

Red, thanks for the information. My husband has an older Rigid that is having problems cutting true. He's checking out what he needs to do to correct a few things but it's nice to know it can be adjusted, maybe a little. We go to a local saw mill and pick up rough cut lumber and re-saw so if he can't get it dialed in then there just may be a new bandsaw under the old Christmas tree this year.
The cast iron wheels on the Grizzly really make a difference in reducing vibration. If you can gets some for the Ridgid that might be a reasonable upgrade that could really up your re-saw game.
thanks for the tip on the store locations...I had no idea there was one in springfield - I just live a couple hours north so I plan to go visit them in the spring/summer and hopefully return in the fall to purchase a new band saw!! Love it. Thanks for the useful information.
so glad you did this, I am looking right now for one and a planer
Thanks for the video Red.
Craigslist scores are the best. Picked up a Milwaukee portable bandsaw for $50.oo still had the metal case and the all the books.
When looking on Craigslist one must be patient. And look at other cities around that area.
I initially bought a WEN saw but had to return it. There was something wrong with the lower guides that wouldnt allow them to be adjusted properly. I then bought the Grizzly 14 inch (anniversary edition) and love it.
Planninv on getting one of tge dedicated metal saw. This vid helped thx red!
Hi Red!
Wen also makes a great 5” metal band saw. I ordered one from Home Depot for 243.00, with free shipping, I love it. It’s a great deal for the money, I use it for cutting stock for my lathe.
I started out with a hand me down Harbor Freight 14" bandsaw. I made some nice modifications to it and used it for over a year. After I had made some money, with it, I purchased the Laguna 14 BX, and wow, what a difference. I bought the Laguna mostly for the resaw capacity, but going from 1/2 hp to 1 3/4 hp was quite a noticeable difference. As I do wordworking, as a second source of income, it was worth getting a better saw. But, I agree with you. Watch craigslist for used saws. Great place to buy them.
I have one of those Ridgid saws. I wish I could get deals like you did around here. I watched CL over 6 months and bandsaws get picked up quickly at any thing below $250, like the post is up for an hour and you are already too late.
So I paid $200 and wish I didn’t. It vibrated like crazy until I balenced both wheels and the pulley in back, taking crazy amounts of metal out. If I looked closer when buying I could have see the casting was thicker on one side than the other. I also changed the belt out for a linked belt and put good polyurethane tires on so it runs really smooth now. But then there is the crappy pot metal castings the cracked and broke holding the upper guide bearings and the tension adjustment rod that stripped out.
The good thing is that quality parts from other brands fit perfectly so every time something breaks I can replace it with a quality part from something else.
I bought one of the H.F. Cheepy metal saw I had it for 20 years it worked okay for horizontal but I had a lot of trouble cutting vertical I couldn’t keep the blade into the guide bearings it just kept popping out and I couldn’t afford to get a new one.
Good video...actually I've been eyeing the WEN 10" bandsaw to add to my pool cue shop. Would love to get the 14", but I only have so much room in the garage lol.
I saved up for the Rikon 14" (looks like that Laguna saw) so glad I did. Very worth it... plus, it's a dual voltage motor. So if I come across a situation where I need more HP, I can re-wire the motor for 220v.
Wow, that is a great saw.
What do you recommend for a 12" resaw bandsaw? I see some of the older bandsaws have lower horsepower, but I don't know how important that is. Is 1/2 HP enough to saw through 12" hardwood with one of those old delta's with riser blocks?
I remember when Home Depot came on the market with their " Ohio Forge " line of tools. A nice 4 knobber for the money. Still using it.
My grandfather had an old motorized hacksaw for cutting metal. That thing was an antique but it worked.
I love those things
Damn!!!!! That blade popping off scared the crap out of me! 12:15
I usually listen to these videos on 1.5x speed. I was watching this just now and was like "Yo did Jeff have a stroke?" but no, it was just on normal speed. hahaha
I was looking at 10” and 14” bandsaws at HF and they both cut wood up to 6” thick. So what does a 14 do that a 10 can’t? And I’m really cheap..
14 in is the throat capacity between the blade and the throat. That's the max width.
Very cool and great info. A bit sus loving the Grizzly😅 but it probably suits my needs. My only concern that you have human arms & hands! 🍺😎✌
Which band saw to get for cutting pvc?
If you are demoing installed PVC get the HF portable. For everything else I just use my chop saw.
Nice
3:17 missing out on features on newer saws? What features? As a moderately experienced woodworker that’s done work for money I’m thinking any 30 year old saw will do more than I need so I’m not sure what I’d missing. Maybe I missed you telling what that was.
10:35 glueing and bolting 3/4mdf adds a lot of mass, and on a couple ‘cheaper’ tools I’ve actually made a polyethylene sheeting lined box and filled it with sand. Mass is sometimes more of an impact than the rigidity of the stand- but definitely laminate MDF or plywood to tool stands even if adding bulk weight
14:50 excellent
Wow, the Wen looked suspiciously like the Rikon bandsaws. I do want to mention that my 14” Laguna is an awesome saw and yes it’s from Taiwan 🇹🇼. 😏
There ya go....how about a “history of Powermatic” video?
As DaBear said: "Bearly been used"...🤣😂
Wen vs Grizzly?
