- Lumbinī is a Buddhist pilgrimage site in the Rupandehi district of Nepal.It is the place where Queen Mayadevi gave birth to Gautam Buddha. Lumbini has a number of temples, including the Mayadevi temple, and others. Also located here is the Puskarini or Holy Pond where the Buddha's mother took the ritual dip prior to his birth and where he, too, had his first bath, as well as the remains of Kapilavastu palace.

Lumbini has changed a lot since I first visited it in 1992. There was just a small shrine, the Ashoka pillar, the pond and an old buddhi tree. Then I had the whole place to myself for 3 days as there were hardly any tourists. And I was fortunate enough to be briefed by the archaeologist who participated in excavating lumbini. I remember him as basanta. Hope he is still around. Cheers.
