Just picked up a pair of Hoka running shoes based on Chad and chilly’s shoe review. I have an 18” rod in my leg and many shoes cause that to hurt during running, walking etc. In just a week they have been life changing! Super comfortable but that thick sole has made all the difference. It’s been the first time in years that when I get out of bed in the morning that my leg isn’t dragging until it gets warmed up. As always thank you for your content and congratulations on the Mid State Mile win. Bring on Goggins and Haines!!!
I honestly only rock Hoka's or Salomon, they make some of the best road and trail shoes. Currently running with Speed Goat 5's for trails and a mix of Clifton 7's or Arahi 5's for roads. Really hoping to one day work my way up to a marathon distance for my long runs. I've never been someone who enjoyed fast running, it's always been distance for me. Throw on a vest, grab some gels/snacks/water bladder, put my phone with a podcast in the back with no headphones, and just head out for the day.
I have run 25 to 30,000 miles in my running life. Ran a half marathon once and that was enough. I always came back to Brooks but find your choices interesting. I always run on pavement...and now mostly treadmill as I approach 70 years old. This channel is going to be the cult hit that Jocko has also found. The humility and honesty of you 2 SEALS is absolutely impressive. Keep up the good work. I watch everything you post.
Good info - thanks a ton. I love my Altra Lone Peaks, but 1) I don’t run (different category entirely) but 2) I do backpack long distances (>100 miles at a stretch). Switching to Altras has been a game-changer for me, and durability has been acceptable (at least 600 miles per pair - less impact than running, but more total weight). The wide toe box has eliminated a ton of problems, and I think the lower stack height helps with foot placement and trail feel. I feel like the choice of shoes is highly individual, and the process of finding shoes is personal, but videos like these help to shortcut the process. So thanks for that.
I have found over the years of running that thick cushion shoes mess up my knees. Something about the thick cushion messes with my gait enough that I start having knee issues.
I signed for Naval Aircrew. And knew I had to get to running if I was going to prepare myself before that journey began. I was looking for someone to get me motivated more in myself, and help me prepare my mental state in the correct way. This video is all I needed. I’m now running everyday, and feel more confident it will take me longer to brake then it would have otherwise. Good advise.
Hey guys Luv the videos. If not already done, it would be helpful if you could talk about training in terms of your weekly mileage, long runs, do you run every day of the week, etc. Thanks and keep up the awesome work and info you are providing.
Thanks for the video! For running or hiking, having your stride evaluated, arch support, supinate or pronate.Adjust for high arch, low arch, these basics will help prevent unnecessary injuries. A visit to an orthopedic surgeon can be very helpful
I bought a pair of Altras a while back myself, and ended up straining my Achilles! I've settled in to the Nike Pegasus trail 4, it is a great cushioned shoe that can run on the trail or on the road.
Damn, that's one of the best tips I ever received. My shoes feel wrapped tight like a stick of dynamite. And I'm ready to go off and get some. Thanks Chad & your mom for the shoe tying tip!
I’m getting a ton out of these gear reviews, thank you guys! Your race nutrition video was spot on, too. Would you consider doing one on dinner the night before a race and breakfast? Thanks!
Nice video, I have thought about sandals, but scared of kicking rocks... As someone with wide feet (wide at toes but normal mid foot and heel) I have only found 2 brands with trail shoes that fit me; Topo and Altra. My current rotation is; Topo Pursuit, Topo mtn-racer 3 and Altra Mont Blanc carbon. I can use Speedgoat 5 and it was my race shoe last year, but even the wide fit is too narrow in the toes, so now I switched to Mont Blanc.
Im 6 ft 2 and 255 pounds and have broken both ankles in the past and I run 5k three times a week in some basic flat vans. My feet knees and back have no issues
HOKA 4 life!!! Love HOKA been running Clifton for road days, Speedgoat and Mafate for trails. I also found to help offset the width I purchased a 2E width and wear a slightly thicker sock like ballgame or smart wool. And I use anti chafe on feet and toes
I come from a running family and used to run extensively, especially in the Marines. I'm partially disabled with back, knee (surgery, Naval medicine) and shoulder issues and have had to stop running due to extreme back pain. I wish I could run again and your other video where you "run because you can" struck a cord with me. What I would give to be able to run again. I used to be as Asics guy. Interesting to see these new brands. Thanks for the content.
I run in a canvas Crock. It has super cushion and is light as a feather. It’s the closest thing to running bare footed. I have tan in regular Crocks for 5 miles; but you must have the strap on the heel. I never go more than 5 miles. The bottoms do wear quickly on the road. I’m going to try the sandal thing.
I’m 6’3 220 and just completed my first 100 miler. I have about 10 pairs of hokas, hahaha. Only shoes I trust to take a beating for hours and not tear up my feet.
As a 64 year old marathoner I’m for Hoka… Three types of chronic foot pain just disappeared. Long ago we ran in steel pots, flak jackets and jungle boots with those crappy old UDT shorts. Some things are best left in the past.
I hurt my left achilles wearing Altras on a 25K trail run. Of course I wore them for many miles before that happened so it may have happened in any shoe. Since then I’ve added an aftermarket insole to give it a tiny heel drop and stiffen the thinner foot bed some. I’ve also started running in the Hoka Speedgoat. Definately more cushion.
i had a pair of teva in the 1990's when they were made in the usa. last i checked they weren't made here anymore. saucony used to have the slogan "proudly made in bangor maine." you guys should contact new balance and see if they will make an ultra running shoe in the u.s. with your input.
I've been using Hokas, but the problem is they're soft, you cant feel the ground, I a feel like they "smush" around to much from left to right. I'm going to go with a lower and harder shoe next time.
1:35 answered my question, but I think that is awesome that you are associated with people beyond just TEAM "guys" unlike what you see with most of the other spec op guys with channels or the like. that has been my anecdotal observation at least. I have been a runner since I was a wrestler in junior high. That led me to track and cross country since a lot of wrestlers also run to keep in shape during the off season. I then spent ten years in the Army, and while I am not in horrible shape, I run maybe three miles every other day. I am really giving this ultra marathon thing a thought though, and trying to see if my wife and daughter want to give it a go to. My daughter is a competitve swimmer and hates running though, LOL.
Thanks for the honest video guys, I’m just getting into doing more distance and definitely want to give those shoes a try. Would you recommend the same shoes for some that what has a wider foot?
Altra shoes have a wide toe box and generally work well for people with wider feet. If you are interested in Hoka shoes, they have many that come in standard and wide widths. The best advice would be to go to a local running store near you and get fitted. That way you can try on as many pairs as you like.
I love cushioned shoes also now I am older 62 to be exact,I've tried lighter faster shoes and paid the price every damn time,so I go for pretty damn cushioned like hoka clifton 9,after running my feet feel better so I can run again ,I need to run so when I miss running I'm not happy, and the speedgoat or tops cushioned, that's all
I'm curious about the whole barefoot scene, and have a pair of Luna sandals coming. I'm old and fat, so I don't expect much out of myself. But, I would like to hear more about what you guys think of the Born to Run (Christopher McDougall book)/Barefoot fad
Teva’s last a long time. The original Chaco’s last forever, as far as I can tell. Vibram soles are the key in my experience. It holds up much better than anything else.
I am curious as well. Some pairs of socks are $20.00. I don't know if I have the constitution to pay that much money for socks unless I get some real high recommendations.
I just have a pair of Brooks I got on sale for 50 something last year at a Wagners store here in Alabama. I mainly buy 15 dollar shoes for daily use cause I'm unaware.
Chad, God bless. Have you tried luna sandals retro mono Gordo or retro Oso? Great running sandal. I’ve cloaked at least a 1000km and used them on long runs and in an Ironman. Am I cloakin 4min km pace like when in the carbon x? No. But I’m enjoying the running process way more. No injuries (you gotta adapt slow and give time for the tendons and muscles time to read out the process). And its pure as it gets. Curious how they would hold up with someone who’s clock in higher paces
I have a question for the pros. What kind of shoe would a 48 year old 270 lb (muscle) wear who suffers from shin splints since he went over 195lbs in body weight just after high school. I am in good shape. I have lifted weights for 33 years do cardio etc. I do like running but the splints kill me. Ideas?
Can anybody recommend running socks? Some of these jokers want $20 per pair. I don't want to get bamboozled! Specifically, running socks for when it is hot and humid.

This is so awesome to hear👊
Bring on Goggins!!!💯💯💯
I’m a brooks guy. For me it’s the insole. I swap out the insole with powerstep. The wide toe box is everything, for me. Love your content.
@rob2326 Any models of Brooks you recommend?

Chili with short hair and a beard looks like a different person

I’m gonna start longboarding in the sandal. The spread is where it’s at. Woo! Thanks guys!
I have found over the years of running that thick cushion shoes mess up my knees. Something about the thick cushion messes with my gait enough that I start having knee issues.
I like this SEAL alot. Very down to earth.
Love the Hoka! Done 2 100 milers in the Speedgoat EVO and never took them off either race. Great shoe!
Thank you and God bless.
Just got my first pair of speedgoats and I’m loving that cushion. Marshmallow describes them perfectly.
👊👊👊

I hope you grow. I was a 92G reg army. I was popular as a cook for my PT , not my technical skills. effort is king.
Thank you gents! Appreciate the input and thoughts. 🙏
Thank you for watching!

Hoka was originally designed for extreme trail running and hiking. I use them landscaping, fishing, mountain biking and they hold up for a log time!
Thanks for the video!

I wear the Hoka Stinson ATR. Tons of cushion and the past two models seem to have a pretty big toe box. I wear the Bondi for roads/gravel.
Excellent tips there! Keep them coming!
This is great! Keep these videos coming! Also check out the new north face Vectiv Enduris. Amazing shoe. (Fits Medium to narrow feet)
Thanks so much for sharing your hard learned lessons on gear.
Appreciate you brother!

I don’t run unless I’m being chased but for some reason I watched this entire video and liked it.

Probably caused by running

I had a pair of Hoka Bondi 6s and had achilles issues but I may try a different Hoka after watching this. I may try that speedgoat.
Very informative! Great video. Thanks
i went with the altra escalante since I'll be running on the road primarily
Altras for me…toebox for my wide feet and the durability & comfort are awesome!
Great video!
You guys need to come to Auburn CA and do the 100 mile westernstates run 🏃♂️

You can get the Altra Timp 5 in camo, nuff said!
Do y'all have more videos on ultra running? Love em and Love what y'all are doing! thanks
These are all fairly spendy a great budget shoe is the Saucony excursion, they run about the same as Brooks ghost at 1!3 the price....nice video
Quicksand is a youtuber who has thru hiked 3 times on the AT. He told me that hoka speed goats are his go to shoe when he hikes the AT.
Great content

I run in Teva Sandles awesome. Sock is key.
Guess i gotta try on a pair of the speed goat. Won't be doing no hundred milers in them but may 3 or 4 miles

I have been hitting 20 miles a day 40 years old and 4 months pregnant! I need something better! I just ordered underarmor and wish I had seen this
I’m also an ultra runner. My favorites are Saucony Peregrine and Altra Lone Peaks.
Hey Chad is it true you are Garand thumbs real dad? Be awesome to see u do a fit test against your son. Maybe a little range competition too!

So jordan 1
how do you feel about the hoka bondi 8?
What does the glueing of the insole do to the shoe make it better, I just have arch supports in my Brooks shoes
Not enough funds for the Hoka yet.. maybe one day
Do you still like the Clifton? Version 8?
You can tell this is a serious topic. Noah looks intense.

Hoka has every style and every terrain and every distance...........
The biggest problem with Hoka is they list some shoe models for "all genders", have "Vegan" listed as a feature, and tout recycled materials.
How about arch supports ... Do you guys use them?
How’d chilli get his awesome nickname?
We keep that a secret.
@@3of7Project if I had to guess, it involved eating chili and having a serious case of the squirts.

Definitely go with socks for the sandals to avoid slipping.
If you heel strike, then you will experience the damaging you are already creating, more intensely, in zero drop

Chilli!? Is he trying to go dark or something??
OM Goodness look what three years had in it…
👍🏼
Bare foot is the best running shoe ever
I kick out the big toe on all my shoes. pigeon toed grabbing.
OK.. Now I understand why chilly wears his hair the way he does.. Too get as far away as possible from this look..
Lol lol i thought 🌶 Chilli had long hair. Lol
Altra is horrible. No cushion and way too much room in the forefoot area. Hoka is the best. Especially the Cliftons in which I have to get a wide in.
Hokas lol. Overbuilt Trash shoe. I’ll stick with my brooks. Haven’t let me down in 30 years running 100milers.
jeez is that a short haired chilli
Is chili ur son
