Hell, if I get much older ... I'll be dead! But, I've been listening to good ole Bob Zimmerman since '64, or was it '63? Whatever, it was a long time ago, and yeah, he does have a certain genius, and like so many other geniuses, he gets misread and misinterpreted quite a bit. Regarding the album this song is on, it's got to be one of the most poignant collection of sad songs I've ever heard. When this album came out in '75, I'd just been "dumped" by the woman I'd been seeing for quite awhile and this was like an album of theme music for me until I got my emotional self back together again. It's only recently that I can listen to it without slipping into a space filled with sad memories. Now, send me a bill for this "session" and I'll send you a check.

I'm in the process of putting to memory all my favorite verses; trouble is they are ALL my favorites!!!!!! Love You
The Nobel Prize for literature could not have gone to a greater poet of his era. From a song, no one can put a film of life inside your head like Bob Dylan can.
No, it was dumb to give the Nobel in literature to a songwriter - nepotistic and tunnel visioned. Millions of book writers, past and now, could’ve received it instead of a songwriter. Songwriters have their own awards. It was an insult.
"Suddenly I turned around and she was standing there...with silver bracelets on her wrists and flowers in her hair...she walked up to me so gracefully and took my crown of thorns..come in she said I'll give you shelter from the storm." My late husband really admired Bob Dylan, and my husband was quite a man so that says a lot to me in and of itself. He LOVED Bob Dylan. I do too, but now I feel warm but sad when I hear his songs. I want my husband with me and singing along or playing his guitar along with it. Not having him here playing Dylan's songs..........I don't have words how it feels. Others like me will understand. My situation is not unique. He played a lot of Dylan's songs on his Martin. Those are among my favorite times with him. We enjoyed playing and singing Dylan songs and some others minimum 3 times a week. We'd sit across from each other on the sofa, play guitar and singing together! I mean, how awesome is that to do with your hubby!!! So: THANK YOU Bob, for sharing your genius. I don't think there will be another like Dylan, ever. I am also very grateful Bob wrote some of the most amazing music of all time and because of that, along with the music, I have these memories of my husband, that are very dear. It's pretty cool. Peace!
When Bob's album Blood on the Tracks came out I played it over and over. It was THE best album he ever did. It still plays as good as when it first came out. Every song a wonderful single to be savoured. Bob is now 82 years old and he will surely, " make me lonesome when he goes." I hope he stays around a few more years. As I edit this to change Mr. Dylan's age, over the weekend on 1 September 2023, Jimmy Buffett passed away from a rare form of skin cancer.
Wonderful stuff, even as he's hemmed in by his rhyming scheme. I suspect AI cannot will not be able to repeat this kind of beauty for a while., 1,000,000 monkeys stuff. But if it can, then that'll be a bit ok.
I spent my youth listening to Bob and rebelling against the world. Now I’m listening in my last years and letting it all float over my head. I like it so much better this time around!

When my father had died in 1986, this was the song that kept me going. It is amazing how song writers have such a big influence on all our lives, we listen to small and big hit songs but its people like Bob Dylan who really do change and influence our lives. He has to be one of the most positive people in our life.
Your so right. The dynamic isn't the song it's the story it silently shares between you and your father who listens through your ears and share a taste of his opinion with yours as one feeling. No one rest in peace when a piece of him is you
@@uncatila Dylan has never really explained what the true meaning of this song is, but most people think it was a meditation on his then failing marriage, so the woman in the song isnt the virgin mary its actually his then wife
This was one of the most pivotal albums of my life. It was the backdrop of so many moments in my life when I was in my late teens and just turning twenty. Listening to it now, memories, people and events I haven’t thought about for nearly fifty years come flooding in..
67 years old,we were so blest in my generation, we had Dylan,John Prine,Kris Kristopherson,Buddy Guy,Guy Clark,Jimmy Buffet,Merle Haggard, David Allen Coe,Greg Allman,Jim Croce,Micky Newbury, were all the best lyric writers, along with many others
She walked up to me so gracefully and took my crown of thorns, come in she said i'll give you shelter from the storm. No one but Dylan could drop a line like that mid-song and keep right on singing. No big deal
My mom introduced me to music, bob was one of many amazing artists she played constantly through out my child hood. Listening to this takes me home to her from the other side of the world.
This song always reminds me of my late father. When I was a kid, he was the one who showed me this song. I was riding with him in his truck. Dylan's the greatest singer/songwriter of all time. No one else compares to what he's done and continues to do.
I too rode with my dad in his van listening to this record both of us dealing with troubles in our lives, like you say great artist and songwriter/storyteller.
GOAT is always subjective, especially when it comes to the arts. For me Townes Van Zandt, while not as prolific as Dylan, must always be in consideration for GOAT. (Let us face it, Townes was a barely functioning mess, beset by tormenting mental illness, psychiatric abuse that resulted in brain damage and riven by alcoholism and severe drug abuse. He could be considered lucky to have made it to 51)
How come Dylan can write such words ,so clever ,so poignant, so straight to your heart, as a young man, hardly aged ,yet as an older man after life's experiance he is saying nothing it is so weird ,I am just grateful that we have the genius of Dylan ,the young man , for us to enjoy and ponder ,as an old man myself , he brings me to tears in late September 2024 I hope I and mine get shelter from the storm Love and ( I cannot believe I am saying this ) God is the answer
"Blood On The Tracks" is truly one of the great albums of all time. Listening to this masterpiece has helped me get through so rough times. Thanks Bob!
Dylan classics, as with many Van Morrison classics, are, for me, much like great art works. By that I mean they all have an indefinable, intangible 'something' that puts them well above just being great songs. Its not especially the lyrics, not especially the tune, nor the chorus, but they have a magic that goes straight through you and you never tire of experiencing that brilliance.
Truly good music can't be limited to the people you or I will list here, dive deep into the world of truly good music. I am 38 and find new amazing songs/artist everyday and don't be afraid to venture. Music is great in that the more you hear the more you enjoy
@@kylesmicker6534 I like what I like whether it's a month old 10 years or 30 yrs old. If I like a tune I don't care for anyone saying I don't like rock or i don't like indy whatever. Music is music.
I love this song. It reminds me of a time when I was kinda just drifting around and met a great man. Regardless of his sexuality, age, education level or lifestyle he was a dear friend of mine.... He respected my boundaries and never made me feel like I was a bad man and inspired me to let go of all the pain and love and live again. He was gay and I am not, but regardless I loved him as a friend and cherished our time together and all the conversations we had. I never knew he was a dying man and I didn't want to believe it whe he said he'd be dead by the time I graduated from college. 3 years later I came home after graduation and was applying to pharmacy school and find out he'd past away. I'm in my P1 year and honestly if I'd never met him.... I don't think i would have ever got my head back from out the clouds and clean up my life and get focused. I miss you Roger LaPrade, this is for you. God bless you may you rest in peace! I can still you smiling singing this with me still my friend. Until we meet again... RIP
Dylan is good. The more u learn of him u will see just how good but far far from unique as the songs he writes but then is that not uniqueness unto itself. Man am I a pretentious asshole. Must be the plague makin me stupid think
It's so fuckin beautiful to see comments of people feeling for others regardless of world location..the world needs more of that peaceful days to you all out there
One of music’s most beautiful love songs man. Guitar, bass, harmonica - no tricks, no frills, just buckets of sorrow and unparalleled songwriting ability. Dylan was genius.
I never really got the Dylan vibe ... and then it suddenly clicked a few years ago (probably a sign that I'd finally emotionally matured) and now he can move me from dancing to tears in the space of 2 tracks. Genius doesn't do him justice.
40 years this song has been taking my breath away. It's so much more than imcomparable poetry. The lyrics, music, vocals, and arrangement together make it a unique work of art. It's mind blowing how much The Beatles and Dylan changed music and culture in just a few years.
When my marriage ended this song came on and I broke down. I can never remember crying like that from a song but it just resonated with me at that time
We all have a song that drives us. It's completely unexplainable. But you just feel it everywhere. Mine is The Weight by the band. Don't know why but, it gives me the best feeling. 💜💜💜💜
Yep. I think this song can only be really understood by a person like you, and me when I heard it years ago. It is about the painful hurt and disappointment in a failed relationship and trust. Notice all the biblical metaphors too, "I offered up my innocence, I got repaid with scorn." It was after this that Dylan got into this Gospel trend, which unfortunately didn't last either. It's too sad really.
2012.. Spent my money over the year living in the UK and was hitch hiking and riding bus through Spain/Portugal, on my own time. I was young, poor and adventurous lol. Heard this song on the night bus from Vigo and just couldn't hold back the tears. I grew up on the Minnesota iron range, where Dylan grew up, and I will always have a close relationship with his music... no matter where I am.
Shelter from the Storm Song by Bob Dylan Twas in another lifetime, one of toil and blood When blackness was a virtue the road was full of mud I came in from the wilderness, a creature void of form Come in, she said I'll give ya shelter from the storm And if I pass this way again, you can rest assured I'll always do my best for her, on that I give my word In a world of steel-eyed death, and men who are fighting to be warm Come in, she said I'll give ya shelter from the storm Not a word was spoke between us, there was little risk involved Everything up to that point had been left unresolved Try imagining a place where it's always safe and warm Come in, she said I'll give ya shelter from the storm I was burned out from exhaustion, buried in the hail Poisoned in the bushes an' blown out on the trail Hunted like a crocodile, ravaged in the corn Come in, she said I'll give ya shelter from the storm Suddenly I turned around and she was standin' there With silver bracelets on her wrists and flowers in her hair She walked up to me so gracefully and took my crown of thorns Come in, she said I'll give ya shelter from the storm Now there's a wall between us, somethin' there's been lost I took too much for granted, I got my signals crossed Just to think that it all began on an uneventful morn Come in, she said I'll give ya shelter from the storm Well, the deputy walks on hard nails and the preacher rides a mount But nothing really matters much, it's doom alone that counts And the one-eyed undertaker, he blows a futile horn Come in, she said I'll give ya shelter from the storm I've heard newborn babies wailin' like a mournin' dove And old men with broken teeth stranded without love Do I understand your question, man, is it hopeless and forlorn Come in, she said I'll give ya shelter from the storm In a little hilltop village, they gambled for my clothes I bargained for salvation and she gave me a lethal dose I offered up my innocence I got repaid with scorn Come in, she said I'll give ya shelter from the storm Well, I'm livin' in a foreign country but I'm bound to cross the line Beauty walks a razor's edge, someday I'll make it mine If I could only turn back the clock to when God and her were born Come in, she said I'll give ya shelter from the storm Source: LyricFind Songwriters: Bob Dylan
Listened to this on my first trip to Mexico in 75. Still remember driving through the Sonoran desert with the full moon shining. The desert glowed as I began my 27 year sojourn as an international gypsy. Eventually came to realize the answers were all waiting for me inside. Still enjoy experiencing different culture, language, landscapes, foods, world views, and so much more. "I'm sailing away my own true love. I'm sailing away in the morning...."
I would love to hear about your life traveling internationally. I tried it for a year and just didn't I have the opportunity to continue as my mother was dying. Good on you
My dad had mentioned to me once, that it wasn't implying "her" and "God" we born the same day.. That might seem obvious enough. Rather my father's speculation and take on the line was that God and "her" were the birth of two powerful. One truly a biblical character and the other, "her." Sharing the common trait that supersedes all mortal's altruistic reach. And that is of unconditional love.... Food for thought
I only went to law school for three months and dropped out. The government wanted me worse. I was drafted into the Marines. When I got back, I wasn't to fit for law school. I never went back. Coming back wasn't the problem, it was how people looked at you and treated you. A few hated us but I think most just didn't know what to say to us. USMC Sept 1969- Sept 1971
Bob Dylan is the reason I learned to play the guitar. He's the only artist that can paint such vivid images with his words and music. I'm still seeking shelter from the storm...
Dylan’s genius has amazed me for many years now. My wife of 40 years and I listened to Dylan in our youth. Our children grew up listening to Dylan, Van Morrison, Janis Joplin, CSN&Y and such. Dylan’s evolution has always intrigued me. His music I’ve felt always spoke to me. I remember “Slow Train Coming” taking me back to teachings I had as a child, when I needed it. The wife and I have seen Dylan perform on a number of occasions but my son, who is a big fan, never had the pleasure. For his 32nd birthday I offered to take him to see Dylan. His response was “nah...it’s too expensive dad”. My reply was “You have to. It’s something you can tell your grandchildren. It’s like saying you saw Hank Williams.” We saw him. It was great. Even though he’s getting up in years, as am I, we thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you Mr. Zimmerman. God bless my fellow fans. We have something special in common.

The 1st time I heard this song, some skinny junior high kid sang & played it at a lunchtime school "concert". When he was done I became a Dylan addict, just...like...that.
This is the first song my husband played for me in October 1978. We have always said we were each other’s shelter from the storm. Until this year, I never actually heard the verse that says things went bad. I’m glad.
Stop being so simple. The Nobel Prize has been obsolete crap ever since they gave one to Obama for being a half-black president. Bob didn't even show up to the initial ceremony. :'D Same as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Obsolete crap ever since they inducted a rap group. When Dire Straits got inducted, Mark Knopfler didn't even attend the ceremony because of how much of a farce it is.

When my father had died in 1986, this was the song that kept me going. It is amazing how song writers have such a big influence on all our lives, we listen to small and big hit songs but its people like Bob Dylan who really do change and influence our lives. He has to be one of the most positive people in our life.
“When my father died”
Using had doesn’t make it more profound.
My father died when I was 17. I wish I’d had more time with him.
Your so right. The dynamic isn't the song it's the story it silently shares between you and your father who listens through your ears and share a taste of his opinion with yours as one feeling. No one rest in peace when a piece of him is you

He could be considered lucky to have made it to 51)
Bob Dylan is probably my favorite person that I don’t know.

"She walked up to me so gracefully and took my crown of thorns." Like only a woman can. Absolutely fucking brilliant.
Joe Cocker also.
Truest words I ever heard
Musicians have it when they're young bands sometime collectively. The first years seem to produce the best raw music.
Truly good music can't be limited to the people you or I will list here, dive deep into the world of truly good music. I am 38 and find new amazing songs/artist everyday and don't be afraid to venture. Music is great in that the more you hear the more you enjoy

Still gives me chills. Poetry at it's very finest.
One of music’s most beautiful love songs man. Guitar, bass, harmonica - no tricks, no frills, just buckets of sorrow and unparalleled songwriting ability. Dylan was genius.
Buckets of sorrow … Yes.
The best
I never really got the Dylan vibe ... and then it suddenly clicked a few years ago (probably a sign that I'd finally emotionally matured) and now he can move me from dancing to tears in the space of 2 tracks.
Genius doesn't do him justice.
One of the best songs ever written. It is a true raw and visceral song about life, love and redemption.
ONE OF THE GREATEST ALBUMS EVER . NEVER GETS OLD
40 years this song has been taking my breath away. It's so much more than imcomparable poetry. The lyrics, music, vocals, and arrangement together make it a unique work of art. It's mind blowing how much The Beatles and Dylan changed music and culture in just a few years.
Yes miss, that is right
No truer words, have ever been spoken.
It is musicaly so repetitive and it lacks so much of a melody i don't get how you can find it enjoyable...
Dylan did more for music than any artist in modern human history . He is our very soul and thank God I was born in a time that had this sound in it .

@Lorenzo James 'Husband and wife failed, but mother and father didn't.'
Shelter from the Storm
Song by Bob Dylan
Twas in another lifetime, one of toil and blood
When blackness was a virtue the road was full of mud
I came in from the wilderness, a creature void of form
Come in, she said
I'll give ya shelter from the storm
And if I pass this way again, you can rest assured
I'll always do my best for her, on that I give my word
In a world of steel-eyed death, and men who are fighting to be warm
Come in, she said
I'll give ya shelter from the storm
Not a word was spoke between us, there was little risk involved
Everything up to that point had been left unresolved
Try imagining a place where it's always safe and warm
Come in, she said
I'll give ya shelter from the storm
I was burned out from exhaustion, buried in the hail
Poisoned in the bushes an' blown out on the trail
Hunted like a crocodile, ravaged in the corn
Come in, she said
I'll give ya shelter from the storm
Suddenly I turned around and she was standin' there
With silver bracelets on her wrists and flowers in her hair
She walked up to me so gracefully and took my crown of thorns
Come in, she said
I'll give ya shelter from the storm
Now there's a wall between us, somethin' there's been lost
I took too much for granted, I got my signals crossed
Just to think that it all began on an uneventful morn
Come in, she said
I'll give ya shelter from the storm
Well, the deputy walks on hard nails and the preacher rides a mount
But nothing really matters much, it's doom alone that counts
And the one-eyed undertaker, he blows a futile horn
Come in, she said
I'll give ya shelter from the storm
I've heard newborn babies wailin' like a mournin' dove
And old men with broken teeth stranded without love
Do I understand your question, man, is it hopeless and forlorn
Come in, she said
I'll give ya shelter from the storm
In a little hilltop village, they gambled for my clothes
I bargained for salvation and she gave me a lethal dose
I offered up my innocence I got repaid with scorn
Come in, she said
I'll give ya shelter from the storm
Well, I'm livin' in a foreign country but I'm bound to cross the line
Beauty walks a razor's edge, someday I'll make it mine
If I could only turn back the clock to when God and her were born
Come in, she said
I'll give ya shelter from the storm

Dylan has been labeled a great poet. True. But how about his outstanding gift of storytelling, as displayed here?
Jorge Espinosa maybe story telling is part of why he was awarded for the poetry
Storytelling and poetry need not be mutually exclusive.

And to think that Jacque Levy said that Bob Dylan was not a good story teller...

Who else but Bob Dylan could create this? Nobody.
