Left Sheffield with my parents and siblings nearly seventy years ago. Still miss the place. Just to name a few items, it had all I wanted such as public libraries, great boys and girls who were terrific friends, lovely parks for playing cricket and football, woods to explore which looked marvelous at bluebell time. My eyes get somewhat misty as I watch the videos.
When watching these sets of images, I am constantly shocked by how many areas used to have housing. I know that many of these houses were cleared post war in an effort to improve health, comfort and prosperity of the working classes, but with such a shortage of houses for first time buyers and the rocketing prices of those that are for sale for often less than a week. Why are new houses not being built in these areas?
Hi, i love the video's, all twelve of them. Can you or anyone tell me what this piece of music is on Sheffield then and now 6 ? Also, who does these video's ?
+cgisarecrap Thanks for the song info cgisare crap. Are there any plans to make anymore of these video's ? I think a lot of people would appreciate it if more where done. The combination of the images and the music is emotionally breathtaking at times. Just wonderful. Thank you so much for doing them and i hope that more are to come :-)
I left Sheffield in 1971 to seek my way in the world. My sadness in seeing these pictures is about how a planning system got it so wrong. I remember the plan for the “greening” of Attercliffe. Now I see it’s fruition and all it means is whole communities scattered all over and nature filling in the gaps like an overgrown cemetery. Yes, much of the housing was not great, but people had a sense of belonging. There is now no sense of coherence, identity or connection between these waste grounds. These are not the promised parks and places to relax. Too much power in too few hands all playing with the streets and houses like a game of lego.
Then the mass immigration from eastern Europe to further upset the balance. Most of the slobs from the EU appear to spend all day at the bookies, or on the street hanging around doing bugger-all apart from drinking vodka. Tell me 1. How are these people 'contributing' to our country and society. 2. How come these layabouts never seem to get forced onto government schemes like unemployed brits do?
BuzzFood absolutely agree! Every area they enter they destroy it. Just look at Page Hall. Darnall is a shit-hole but the gypsy vermin have made it worse.
All these old streets are so familiar to me, takes me back to when I was a lad in an instant, brings a tear to my eye..ha well its no good sitting and pondering about how sheff used to be..have to move with the times I suppose ….is prob a better place for knocking the cliff ,upperthorpe, parson cross ,shalesmoor ,ect down. Ho and not forgetting the superb rd. improvements in town…Mmmmmmmmm.
Toby Linley atleast you got to see when sheffield was at its best, i miss the kelvin flats and the maisonettes on oxford street where i was born.. i cant seem to find any pictures of them either

Nostalgia is human.
Just killed so much of sheffield culture
My uncle used to work at Cannon Brewery
Stones were 'feightin' man's beer'.
Some very sad sights in these videos. I ask myself, why do these little pockets of life vanish in the breeze?
So many stupid changes ! (3:18).
