I think this is a really important message. I worked with an interior designer a couple of years ago. I ended up realizing that I was making my decisions based on what I thought everyone else would think. It took me until recently to get that all out of my head and just consider our own life.

It drives me crazy that people either decorate - or worse - do home renovations based on resale value and what would do well on the market. ~I'm~ living here so I'm renovating and decorating in the way that ~I~ prefer. If we sell our house one day, the buyers can change what they want. How am I supposed to know, for example, what color bathroom vanity they want? Trends do NOT equal preferences.

I recently started a minor remodel on just the living room (getting rid of popcorn ceiling and wood paneling). Now I'm constantly reminding my other half that we don't need to make all the design decisions and purchases right this minute. Its ok to have furniture that doesn't match, its fine if the old rug doesn't really work with new paint color, we don't have to buy lamps and end tables when I'm not even sure what I want. The other downside is, my home didn't look really like us, it was just "generic" from online copy-cat like.

I think it's just weird how everything is categorized. I have certain styles that I like simply because I like them. I've been told I like cottage core. No, I just like what I like. I've been told I'm into that 90's vibe. No, I'm just a Gen Xr and still vibe like I always have. The thing I hate is that whatever is trending at the moment is usually the only thing that's available at stores. When torn jeans were all the rage, I couldn't find a pair of jeans I wanted because they all had holes in them. And for those of us who want nothing to do with trends, apparently everything is a trend or a scene or an aesthetic. It's so annoying.

We are conditioned from a very young age on to compare ourselves to others to be competitive, because our society is built on competition. That mindset will go nowhere. But we can make the decision to compartmentalize where we want/need to compete with others. I like design very much, so I do put a lot of effort into my interior design but I'd say most people actually don't care that much about interior design aesthetics and just want it to feel homey. I love watching interior designers home tours. Often they are very eclectic homes and have functional qualities you don’t see in aesthetically pleasing homes.
My idea is decorate the walls, have minimal flat surfaces, and get nice decorative things you use like shower curtains and trash cans.
All of my bathroom/ bedroom trash cans are baskets I’ve collected over 22 years. Before getting them I had Dollar Tree garbage cans.
My garbage cans is a cheep close top from Walmart. Being white allows it to blend in. It’s also white so I can see where the dirt is and can clean it.

Growing up my home was cluttered and barely functional with cheap ugly secondhand stuff. My parents particularly my father didn’t like spending money to the detriment of our health. So having a balance is key especially investing where you spend the most time ie. bed, bedding, mattress and couch. @@Weeabruh your examples of different temperatures of light found in nature makes a really interesting point! I do think there’s something to be said about layering different temperatures in this way, same as you might layer different textures or colors. As long as my lighting doesn’t make my home feel like a hospital, I’m happy! 😂

It’s not economical to replace this 8;year old rug with a $2 grand rug 😂
