  • In this video, I explore the Pro Capture mode on the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II Micro 4/3 for birds in flight photographing the great spotted woodpecker in the forest. Using the Pro Capture mode allows me to save photos from before I press the shutter button and capture woodpeckers in flight as they leave the nesting hole.

    I think my favorite part of your videos isn't so much the photography, as the sheer joy on your face when watching wildlife. Thanks for sharing. Stay well.

    I agree with Euan Maxwell that this is a total game changer especially for wildlife photography when so many shots are missed at the critical moment because they happen so quickly.

    Yesterday mor I got I found my own pair of woodpeckers and it was so much fun to photograph and watch them. You can use the Olympus EE-1 to get a wider view, if you know where the focus will be you can use the laser sight to see the birds coming in.

    I used the pro capture low the other day to catch a Red-winged Blackbird taking off in flight. I use the same Sony tough card as you but I prefer to use procapture low or silent low, that way I rarely fill the buffer!

      Espen Helland excellent actually. The 1.7 x crop in 4K comes in very handy for that extra « reach » and when filming in 50 FPS that means lots of choice for the perfect frame

    Hi Espen, A big "Thank you" for your excellent videos. As an Old Bloke who has significant hearing loss I wonder if it might be possible to put a text version of your commentary on the bottom of videos when you are whispering out on location as I, (and possibly many others) have a great deal of trouble hearing what you are saying under those circumstances.

    Hi from western Australia. Footage looks great, glad its working out for you with the new camera, you certainly are getting some great video and images there. , I've just gone mirrorless mainly due to arthritis, I still have my 7DII and 5DIII but its become harder all the time to carry them far. So I've just gone to a Fuji XT3 and I have a couple of lenses and hoping to get a 55-200 (so much smaller and lighter than my canon gear) the camera also can shoot mechanical and electronic shutter at extreme speeds.. Quite amazing really. But I think Im going to have to change my whole photography ways when it comes to nature and birds, after years of huge lenses . I guess its something to aspire to, change is as good as a holiday so they say. I will enjoy watching you and others I watch on UA-cam for all the wonderful close up wildlife

    Hi Espen, really enjoying your adventures with the new Olympus gear. Can you answer a couple of questions please. 1/ Though you have had the Olympus for a short time, are you finding it gives better results than the cannon gear. 2/ Living in Scotland how do you find the low light capabilities of the Olympus (or is that problem removed by having Topaz) 3/ Why the mk2 and not the mk3? Sorry it's a bit long but I am also thinking about the same change.

    • @EspenHelland
      @EspenHelland  4 роки тому +1

      loving the new gear, I think it's better than what I had, the 7Dii on many aspects. Noise can be an issue, it's one of the downsides, but I don't find it that big a problem. I use lower shutter speeds and the IS is excellent. Topaz helps when I need it. It'll be different over winter when it's a bit darker, but I tried out the em1x over the last winter and got great results with it. I went for MK2 first because of price, the 300mm f4 was expensive, but wanted to get that first and upgrade the body later.

    Woods are massive so you must of been right place right time to find that nest! I know the chicks make noise but you have done well to find that! I’ve found a nest aswell but noticed only one woodpecker is feeding the chicks, do you think the chicks will make it? And also do you think you will change to Olympus ? Thanks Ben.

    Nice work Espen. The procapture mode looks very useful. Having given up 640mm effective focal length how are you finding 600mm effective ? If Olympus finally release the 150-400 f4 I will be very tempted to make the switch

    Hi Espen, great shots and very tempted to change to this set up. I read somewhere that high ISO was an issue but didn't state what high actually was. Do you find it ok without using topaz in post production? Thanks

    • @EspenHelland
      @EspenHelland  4 роки тому

      Thanks Brian! It's definitely one of the limitations with the system. It think the em1x is better and on par with the Canon 7Dii with is good for a cropped, but nothing like some of the newer full frame dslrs. I always try to reduce my shutter speed instead of increasing ISO, and with the excellent image stabilisation it can work really well. I try not to go higher than ISO 1600 with the em1ii, but I have and they are still ok with some cleanup with DeNoise.

    Can you use an SD card with 170mb write speed with ProCapture High?

    • @EspenHelland
      @EspenHelland  3 роки тому +1

      You'll be able to use it, but it may take a little time to buffer. I haven't used a 170mb before, best to try it and see if the buffering time is acceptable to you. I've tried one slower and the camera stalled for quite some time to save the images. I use a 299mb and a 260mb write speed now and they're really quick. Let me know if you try it out, I'd be interested to hear if 170mb would do the job.

    Thank you for posting Espen, very much appreciated - I have just switched to the M1X from Canon but not had chance to try out ProCapture - just to get it set up! A couple of questions arising from this video if I may ..... (1) Am I right in thinking that you still have to half press the shutter button to instigate ProCapture even if its focus function as been taken away after setting back button focus? (2) I am thinking of using a remote cable release to effectively half press and then fully press the shutter - do you know if this will work with ProCapture? I am hoping that it will as I want to mount my camera on a tripod as you have done, prefocus and then operate the camera without physically touching it. I'm thinking that as a remote release is simply an electrical extension to the shutter button switch I will be able to use ProCapture in that way.
    EDIT
    Just had a brief try with a remote release in my house and it DOES work as expected - half press on the remote release invokes ProCapture .... now to find a proper subject and get to grips with this new way of shooting.

    • @EspenHelland
      @EspenHelland  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Alan, awesome! I’ve been thinking about a remote cable release as well, several times it can be a strain to wait for a long time. I’m sure you already answered your other question as well, but yes you still have to half press shutter button for pro cap as bbf only focuses. But you may be able to change that in settings.

    • @alanryder
      @alanryder 3 роки тому

      @@EspenHelland FYI, the Canon RS 60E3 remote release is identical in wiring to the Olympus RM-CB2. The Canon one is available on Amazon at about a quarter the price of the Olympus one (which is currently unavailable anywhere that I have looked). I prefer "officially" branded devices like this rather than those labelled as "compatible" simply because of quality control and manufacture quality .... but maybe that's just me.

  • @xflyingtiger

    I am curious: Is there a remote shutter release that will operate the Pro Capture mode? That might relieve some of the difficulty with holding half shutter press on the camera body.

    With pro capture L, I find the autofocus sometimes misfocus for some do the shots during the c af tracking. How do you make it more accurate? The bird af does misfocus also, is there a setting where it can be tune to be more accurate ? Yes, I know it is not as good as a Sony A9 but i love my EM1X and all the other benefits it bring.

    • @EspenHelland
      @EspenHelland  2 роки тому

      I guess it depends a bit on how you focus, I tend to use just the one small point for focusing C-AF. I only use bird tracking in particular cases because I find that it loses the subject sometimes.
