Been practicing for the last 10 years. I absolutely love iaido. It helped me through many hard times. Everytime i dress up for training my mind starts to focus and i can get rid of negativ things. It's a wonderful vehicle of japanese culture and a beautiful way to bring body and mind together and become a better person.
Never gonna quit.

@@Q2Japan My Dojo, Doshi Kai, is in Massachusetts and is affiliated with AUSKF. I used to do Kendo as well till a car accident precluded sparring. We are honored to have Japanese Sensei come teach us at our national and regional seminars. Besides Americans my Dojo has Bulgarian and Chinese students, so indeed Iaido is spreading.

I've just recently joined a local dojo to start practicing Iaido. A part from the richness of the discipline, full of history, traditions and mindfulness, what I really love is the sense of community at the dojo, the welcome I've had when I joined and the care the sensei put to each student to really teach the true meaning of this discipline, without cutting corners but in a very enjoyable manner. This video reminded me a lot of the atmosphere in my dojo 😊

It is, although it can require a lot of looking to find it and might require a long commute or even involve a move. New York, Saint Louis, Seattle, and Los Angeles are places where some highly-respected sensei have dojo, but there are also others. Seattle, in particular, has schools of Iaido and Iaijutsu, as well as "koryu" (old school) kenjutsu, with master-teachers licensed by the headquarters in Japan. There are also a lot of phonies (both inside and outside Japan), so do your research. Find out who a teacher's teacher was, who his or her teacher was, and his, and his, etc. If there's no lineage, there's no truth in claims of teaching "real samurai swordsmanship." It will also be helpful to visit several dojo to see which one feels "right" to you. Looking around can also help show the differences between the real deal and the pretenders. Although there are different "schools/styles" of swordsmanship, they will have many common elements, and the differences will be subtle. For example, in the Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu system shown here, the angle of the sword when drawing and resheathing is different than in the Muso Shinden Ryu that I practiced, but the overall movements are similar in the big details. If a teacher has you spinning the blade behind your back and passing it between your legs "just like a Ninja Kung-fu Monk" then you should say thank you and make a quick exit. (I exaggerate of course, but the point stands.)

23 year old from israel, going through my first year in katori shinto ryu.
We train on grass by a big river under the trees and the atmosphere is amazing.
The sensei's words about wanting foreigners to learn iaido gave me a lot of energy to keep going.
I already did aikibudo and jujutsu but finding iaido is a great addition that i'm glad i did not miss.

Thank you for posting. I recently started Mugai Ryu Iaido and really enjoy both the physical and mental challenge without all the "hands on" stuff, bruising, and bleeding that were a feature of my previous martial art. As a grandmother, I can appreciate the grace of the older Iaidoka.

I'm a humble student of iaido. I've been practicing it for the last 8 years now. It made me face many of my inner demons and many of my flaws. But, it's worthing it. I like to think that I'm a better person because of my practice of iaido.

I am not formally trained in iaido, I have learned what I know by reading books and watching others. I would greatly relish the opprotunity to learn from a bonefide sensei, it would be a terrible shame for such an art form to be forgotten. Thank you very much for this upload.

Finally found an Iaido school in the Nashville area. Will talk to the instructors and see if they are on the up n up because I have been wanting to do this for a looooong long time. I came from years of karate but it was too rigid and I love the fluidity of this and Aikido. I'm not a tournament professional, it is something that helps calm my mind and focus. This is good to watch and the information / stories are great.

Suki desu! Rope is the string that connects everything. How you use it dictates the worth of a family or singular person and they always emulate that simple piece of cord. Versatility breeds confidence and structure. Stories breed romance and rebirth and everything lives and dies by the sword which gives birth to the rope. Blades do not exist with nothing to cut. Thank you for keeping the art alive.

What a joy to watch this! I felt like I have known the people in this video for a long time. Weird to have so many common feelings and thought with people from a totally different culture/country on various topics such as liking older objects to keeping not only your body healthy and in shape but your soul as well. What a beautiful concept! If I was living in Japan, I would have definitely sought out this teacher/dojo and join!

For a short time I had the great experience of studing Yaido in Japan, but I had to come back to my country. I realy would like to continue my studing. Maybe one day, maybe I can go back to Japan.

I love this dojo with only 16 members, then you can learn in a different way, not like other dojos were there are 40-50 students at a time and the teachers do not have time for everyone, and if you´re not in the front row you never get any good at it...

I would love to learn any martial Art, especially with a Katana and the Samurai. But with my severe disabilities I can't do hardly any exercise. I love to do woodworking, but when I go to my shop, it's work 10 maybe 15 minutes, then I have to sit down and rest my back for at least 25 to 35 minutes. Oh well, dream on old man!
It's not a terribly physically demanding art so if you find a dojo, you can probably go for it (though who am i say that!). Hope you enjoy whatever martial art your heart seeks. Cheers!

Only good for mind and soul, not for actual combat, because there is to much focusing on unimportant moves like sheeting the sword precisely correct, drawing the sword precisely correct and such nonsense.
In this case, Kendo would be much more practical, if training for real life combat.

Why do you try to create some new style romanization if you already have hepburn, which is not confusing users with random inserts of "h" in place of "u". Mind that this is the same "h" that you also use in "ha hi fu he ho".

They train for decades. What for?? For the romanticized notion of what it's like to be a sword carrying//practicing "Samurai" (which you have to be born into or given the title by a Samurai family).
We're not in the pre-1875 era where there were Samurai and it was legal to carry swords. Be in sword fights to the death....

Unlike kendo u have no resisting opponent so u know about fighting nothing more then aikido guy. Go to kendo dojo and try to apply those lonnng techniques on someone who is willing to cut into your head as deep as it's nessesery by doing it as fast as it's possible. Iaido is good but mainly for knowing how to use sword. Not fight. And it's realy importent to know how to wear and draw a sword. But not so much as how to fight. Iaido is great but as suplement for kendo. Same with battodo. I was fighting with battodo guy. It was easy. Just easy
