    Thanks for sharing, you were a huge help! Been panning for years and finally made my first small ingot. Appreciated you showing techniques to get the gold to melt without losing material, it was a challenge keeping the small flakes in but the flux did the trick. Thank you.

    Try an extension hose so you can leave the map bottle upright (they even make a holster to clip it to your belt) and make the whole process more comfortable. Also keeps from pulling liquid through the torch and surging the flame or even blowing it out.

    the torch is a harbor freight torch its around 20 bucks and sold as a welding torch and works great although im not sure its rated for map gas though, mine said nothing about any other fuel except propane but hey its working nicely with map for him. just thought id share where the torch is from im using mine as a small forge burner

    I made a button of my own small pile gold flakes - used an ordinary propane torch with a little borax powder as flux. I pre-heated the crucible. Ended up with 2.1 DWT. (I use pennyweight rather than grams - so much easier to calculate. 20 penny makes an ounce.) So 2.1 penny is slightly over a 10th ounce.

I can't wait to get back out there in the desert. before my accident, I was not into looking for gold, but time in hospitals and stuck at home I've been watching UA-cam and ran into some your videos.

    It was costly and somewhat funny to see happen, but way back when I was up in Brekenridge Colorado decades ago, the local concrete and gravel plant would let us clean the sludge out of the run off trough of their washer plant. The material the plant used was from huge dredge tailing piles from gold mining many years before.
    Well, over a month or so I would process out this mud and clean the gold up. We got a few ounces and split it up. One of the guys decides he wants to melt his down, so he tosses it in a metal pan and goes to town on it with a Mapp gas torch. None of us had done this before, so no flux and he just burns and burns and burns away on it. Finally he stops and no gold in the bottom of the pan. Just a bunch of slag. He is like, WTH happened to the gold! Tosses out the chunk of slag.
    30 years latter after seeing this I am wondering if the gold was inside the slag, LOL.

    Useful 411 ,I use natural gas from my house and an old medical oxygen generator aka (breathing machine) ,you can find the older type real cheap . i mix both gases via a simple two valve/ torch mixing barrel using a small orifice oxy /acty brazing tip . it will get hot enough to even braze or gas weld metal up to 1/8 " thick .

    Hi Jeff...LOVE the videos. Dude, I used to run the furnaces at Dillon Gage Refining on Indian Trail in Dallas and melted millions of dollars worth of gold, silver, platinum and palladium from pawn shops, jewelers, dentists (gross melting teeth with blood still on em etc!) and literally walked around with 650 ounce ingots still warm from the furnace after vacuum tube sampling them and casting into foot long ingot molds. Point is, you live and die by flux...wrong flux, you lose gold. I always used anhydrous borax as a base and on the 3rd or 4th melt, casting into a conical shaped dore mole, thinned out the final melt with sodium nitrate. Since then, I've become an artist in raku pottery and glass and make all my furnaces, burners etc. to this day. That said. Get on Craigslist under the "art" section and buy a used 110V electric kiln and forget the torch. Go on ebay and buy a small graphite crucible. Use borax as a flux and at the end of stirring the mix at high melt, thin the whole thing by pouring in 10% of the borax weight of sodium nitrate and use a bit more to make it thinner if you want. Your work and efficiency will go WAY up. The ONLY time we used a torch was in small fireclay crucibles and it was an oxy/acetylene torch to burn dentist's teeth to get the palladium/gold melted into a button...didn't even use flux! Keep up the HILARIOUS videos...man you are the Red Green of UA-cam!

    Jeff , I bought an older 02 concentrator (medical ) and use my natural gas from my house as my gas ,
    made a diy torch from two old propane torch heads and valves , using the natural gas from my house and the 02 concentrator for my 02 , and I can do everything but cut with that flame , braze up to 1/8 inch even thicker and if I had a regular cutting torch mixing barrel and cutting head I could probably cut thin material with it if i had a higher pressure source to blow thru the metal , probably regular air compressor air would suffice for that but it is the perfect flame and it's almost free . I sold my big torch and bottles many years ago and i get by with this homemade rig and its all damn near free no more buying gas from welding supply or bottles of map from Meads Hardware store . Just food for thought for uyou or any of those on here interested

    I melted about 1/3 of an ounce of my fine gold with a mapp gas torch, Borax and a really old crucible that was found at an old mine near Congress AZ. I was successful but all of the Borax vaporized before the gold melted. how can I glaze the crucible with borax if it disappears before the golds melting point?

    Trivia: Gold is created during the final stages of a supernova explosion that reaches a temperature of 100 billion degrees. Gold is so rare because the temperature that is needed for its creation (100 billion degrees) only lasts for about 15 seconds as the blast waves collide with the outer layers of the star.

    Hi Jeff. Great videos, really enjoyed them. I used to poke around in the hills and find cool rock specimens. Never knew you could actually vaporize gold, does it simply evaporate into the air? I saw on your one video with your dry washer it looked like you were using the same leaf blower motor for that too that you used for your vac-pack? Also which is the most productive method, 1) roasting pyrites/sulfides or 2) crushing and panning? I'm up in the Portland area but hoping to get out soon and do some panning. Don't let slim steal your gold!!

    • @Askjeffwilliams

    Hi Ask Jeff.Can you tell me what's Flux.I translated the work to my language but still i didn't understand.And tell me plz whats borax?

  • @oxstien123
    @oxstien123 10 років тому

    I tied using borax but it coated my gold a dingy color and didn't resemble gold or melt to a button, I used map gas.. To be fair it was a 10k solid gold ring, seems like it was covered in a glass substance and wouldn't melt to a button rather just large chunks which would be great chunky gold, would borax be the culprit

    Hi Jeff, Great videos, thanks. I have some gold that was melted with aluminum. What is the best way to separate these metals so I have the 95% that you are getting. chemical?, torching? thanks.

    • @Askjeffwilliams
      @Askjeffwilliams  9 років тому +1

      Del Norte Chiropractic smelt the aluminium out with flux and use a cone mold to drop the Gold to the bottom.

      I'm guessing the extra on the top will easily crack away after it is heated. Is this correct? I love your videos, Thanks for your help.

    I found a little container that has a couple tiny prices of gold.about the size of crickets ear, I thought buy looking at the gold I hadin the container, I could compare to what ever I find in a couple buckets of dirt and mud that I brought home from my first prospecting trip . there is lots of shiny stuff,
    So I figured I need to put the gold in a pan with the mud to see how gold really does or does not move.
    I was surprised. I still don't know if I have any . I do know there is a lot here that isn't , so my question would be ,is the term ( concentrates ) meaning all this materiel cleaned and most of the floaty shiny stuff, removed,?
    I mean, what does gold sand really look like wet and dry?
    What does a pan with half cup of this look like? I'd like to see this so I know if ive waisted time and material.
    I dont like looking ignorant going to the guy at the jewelry store . and I know they don't like waisting their time with me.
    If your still reading this, I apologise for not keeping it short and simple. Thanks for making your vidieos.
